As an European I mostly have to cope with second-hand info on US politics, that's why I'm interested to hear your first-hand thoughts on tomorrow's inauguration and Obamas upcoming presidency.

What do you think should be the main focus during the first year?

Well, GWB left quite some scorched earth here and there so I guess he'll be in for lotsa damage containment at first...

Discuss.

I'm excited about possibly seeing some last minute awesome pardons for people who don't really deserve to be pardoned.

I'm interested to see it.

Though I am a bit annoyed by the news coverage and some media outlets. They always say it's not about the color of your skin and that we should be "colorblind". Yet when Barack Obama becomes president, it's all about the color of his skin. While I think we've come a long way from where we were as a nation in the last 40 years, it should be the creed of the man and not the color of his skin that determines what kind of president he will be. And that goes for both sides.

Just my two and a half cents.

I'd post something, but it would end up being what you just said. :buttrock:

I was excited about the partying and all, but I've been drunk so much over the past week that I seriously don't feel like drinking anymore, and that probably won't change tomorrow.

Right now, the big story is what has happened.
A remarkable story thought impossible just a year ago.

What will happen is much harder to discuss.

That pretty much says it.

All I can say is that tomorrow is gonna be a day like no other. All of my European friends keep talking to me about this non-stop.

No one in America is "colorblind" when it comes to race. By and large, not even the actually blind.

For my part, I just hope the Secret Service is prepared to step up and keep the man safe. A lot of people are going to want him dead, for the sole reason that he's one'a'them thar "non-whites." Why, I'll bet he's plottin' to paint the White House black right now!

Issues? What's an issue? Oh, yeah, I gots me lots of issues... Field & Stream, Huntin' & Killin', War o' Northern Aggression, I gots a whole collection...

"black people voted for him because he's black"

"some white people feeling white guilt voted for him because he's black"

"he better not fuck this up, goddammit"

You are 100% right about that. It's close to impossible for any country to be colorblind but its not even "close" for America, its 100% impossible for America to be colorblind. Race has such a huge part in American society that it'll never be forgotten. There is just entirely too much history.

Security is gonna have their hands FULL with this one, that's for sure. I honestly pray to God that no one, the president or otherwise get's hurt because this has the potential to get as ugly as it wants to be. All it takes is one person saying the wrong thing and like a chain reaction an EPIC failure for America could ensue that would set us back 100 years.

My pops knows somebody who is a former SS agent... He says knows of at least one person who is retiring because he don't wanna get killed.

I belive that the term floated in NBC's The Office is "Fighting Ignorance with more Ignorance". Probably the best phrasing against such arguments.

Well, after watching NBC Nightly News with Lestor Holt the other day, I see most media outlets are giving Barack Obama a blank check on his first term. Basically, they're saying that Bush screwed up so much that it will take more than one term to fix. Let's see if the voters are willing to buy that in 2012.

No one wants to face the fiscal realities including those in the media.

I think what is hilarious is how much greater the racial divisions in the country are becoming when they continue with this constant bombardment of Obama's skin color. My feeling is so what if he is black or whatever? Who gives a shit.

If blacks and whites alike were serious about racial equality, his skin color would be a non-factor here. But as seeing it's all that currently matters...well, I guess it serves as a good sideshow for most so they ignore the important stuff. Racism will continue on in America because of this kind of moronic crap.

The status quo will continue in Washington.

Can't ignore those campaign contributors and lobbyists.

God bless America.

Hey Obama heard: "If there's a hero to save us, I'm not gonna' stand here and wait" and said: AMERICA FUCK YEAH, and set out to be that Hero. I heard he raced a game of chicken with a red neck somewhere in Kansas on tractors while Bonnie Tyler belted out that classic Hero song. I hear Kevin Bacon approved of this and at his age now decided to flip around a pole and flew off of it, almost breaking his neck, but Kyra Sedgwick was there to help him up instead of Lori Singer.

As for this "Inauguration" I'll be honest, it's annoying as hell. For some of the same reasons already given + the news are going through a virtual "memories of inaugurations" exposes, and generally being gay as hell about it all. Tomorrow one local channel is going to make it Obama Day. Before his Inauguration, we'll see basically footage of anything related to him, which means if there's video of him in North Shore hanging Ten, we'll be seeing it and hearing about how fucking cool he was/is back in Hawaii... if there's one of him playing basketball and spinning the ball on his finger, we'll hear about how cool he is... then we'll proceed to the inauguration and then see that replayed along with recaps of The Obama Girl and his celebrity status, and the song WINDS OF CHANGE by The Scorpions will blare out of speakers, and ppl will hold up candles and lit lighters to the sky.

For this reason, I plan only to watch the Inauguration, then go about my day same as any.

I think that the possible "Change" would be to go back to how it used to be.... Lobbyists and Interests giving lots of dollars to influence politicians...

The problem with the last 8 years is that the power brokers decided that process was inefficient and just started putting [suddenly] former lobbyists and industry insiders in charge of shit.

I'm waiting for all the Conservatives to bitch how he hasn't done anything by say....hour 3.
I'm excited for this, it is going to be an interesting term considering how big of a shift (well as big as we'll ever see in the states, not really that big of a shift) this is going to be from the past 8 years. Its also nice to know that these 8 years are finally over. :D

Tuesday would be a day to celebrate... Even if McCain/Palin had won the election. I had 1/20/2009 marked on my calendar before Obama (or even Villsack) declared himself a candidate.

Obama winning is just a heaping of double choclate frosting and cherries on top.

At Safeway they have cookies with obama's face on the frosting.

I found it kind of disturbing and funny.

It certainly doesn't hurt that MLK Day is the day before the inauguration --you couldn't avoid the issue if you tried.

I was happy to see one of my favorite Shepard Fairey OBEY prints adapted for Google's main page.
