Well I more meant it in a 'too many jackoffs in Florida' sense, not a 'if Florida bans, we riot' sense, but I see you.

Well I pre-ordered one through Wal-Mart. Nearly $650 after tax for system only, physical Mario kart, and a pro controller.

I'd like to get an extra pair of joy cons but looks like no one is doing pre-orders on those. And if I'm honest, I'd rather have different colors, but we will play four player in our house so if they're not available close to launch I'll probably cave.

With all that said, I'm expecting it will be a Mario Kart machine for 6 months. DK does nothing for me and kids didn't really play Odyssey for long.

I was 99% sure I got through on Target too, had payment info and address and a clickable 'place order' button and still have the 'invitation' request with Nintendo which should be in early May. So who knows what the demand is actually like.

Pre-ordered console only from Best Buy. Took some patience, lots of refreshing. The "Coming Soon" button finally changed to a yellow pre-order button at 30 minutes after the hour.

@lithy how did you add all that stuff to your cart? Did you get it all in one order? Weren't you afraid you'd lose the console, or did you feel secure with the spot you earned in line? I'm planning to just pickup Mario Kart later tonight or whenever.

I got the same combination as lithy but at Target, so I got ~$35 off with Red Card and Circle.

My brother is still in Best Buy limbo, but I have the Nintendo reservation as a safety net for him theoretically.

Here are my experiences.

At Target, no app, but logged in on the website, at 12:00 said sold out for a second, then crashed completely, it wasn't until about 12:15-12:20 that I got the order through to the end but didn't complete that one.

Wal-Mart's system, again logged in on the website, no app, was great. Right around midnight, I actually think it was a minute or two early it had me do an 'Are you a robot?' hold a button test. Then it said it was putting me in line, estimated wait about 11 minutes, then I would have 10 minutes to check out.

It had a 'keep me in line and continue shopping' so I clicked that and it minimized the line wait to a little bar that had buttons for View or Leave line. So while the clock ticked down I was able to add Mario kart and the pro controller. Then the timer was up and checkout was smooth, I had to put in my credit card again since it expired since the last time I bought anything through them.

I got a confirmation email right away and pending charge on the card (I don't know if that's just a hold until it ships, I don't remember how they operate).

You guys are trusting these sites too much. I've been through too many pre-orders where you hit purchase and you're still not out of the jungle. You'll be lucky if the whole site doesn't 502 and send you back to the end of the line. Just because it's in your cart doesn't mean you're safe.

My wife was on Walmart. I don't think she got the option to get in line for quite a while after the hour.

The fact that "I GOT ONE" is trending on Twitter right now along with "Switch 2" and "Best Buy" does kind of put our consumer culture in a bleak light.

The last console I stood in line to buy was the Dreamcast. And I'd already prepurchased it so I didn't have to go through the faggy sniping rituals to defeat the scalpers.

It was fun when we were younger and stores that normally closed at night opened up for a midnight release. Probably sucked for the employees.

Once “camping out” became a thing and people started waiting in line for days…that was enough for me.

I have a hard time thinking of anything I'd be that excited about in my advanced age. I guess as a kid, staying up late was exciting in itself.

That’s a good point.

I agree there is nothing so exciting to me that it can’t wait until the next day during normal hours.

Yeah, it's kind of fun. Whenever a new console is coming out, I set an alarm. My wife and I have our laptops setup together with as many sites ready as possible. You have to be ready. When the sites are causing issues, it's kind of like solving a puzzle. The thrill of the hunt I suppose. And we get to do this from the comfort of home. New console launches are already exciting in themselves.

Lining up or camping used to be fun. Not sure why people are doing so for this low effort upgrade. Wii had twilight princess and wii sports, wii u nintendo land, and switch breath of the wild. I guess I can get horny for a mario kart that has more vehicles that aren't karts.

I can't imagine being excited about preordering this in my late forties or buying mario kart

Some of you need to get other hobbies

I camped out for the Wii.

Thankfully, I'm shredded so it only impacted my ability to pull bitches by a marginal degree.

Actually camped out for the original Xbox too and that was it.

That one was more fun though since it was just my buddy and I and like two other people. I remember getting home after being up all night pumped to play Halo and promptly passing out before even setting the system up--good times.
