Today, for the first time in 8+ years I saw a shmup "in the wild"

I went to the local movie theater and ended up in theater 7 on the back side of the place where I hadn't been before. There are plenty of cabs near the front entrance, but I never knew about these in the back.

Anyways, I was walking by and heard familiar music. I turn around and saw a dedicated.....Raiden 2! I put a quarter in and hit start on the one player side. The buttons were fucked and the stick would only work in the upper 5 directions...should have checked. Then I went to the 2P side and played for about 4-5 minutes and lost my credit. They either had this thing on some insane difficulty or I've become very rusty at Raiden 2.

It was when I put my initials in, I noticed that I was the only person to play the damn thing today. (and it was 8pm on a Saturday night) I played a couple more credits worth and an employee was walking by and stopped and watched. When I was done, he asked me if I enjoyed the game. I thought it was weird, so I just said yea.

Then, he told me that the theater is getting rid of all 5 cabs in the back of the theater. So, I asked him if they would sell this one to me and at what price. He couldn't tell me, but I gave my number to the manager on duty who will let the owner of the place know that I am interested.

I should be getting a call tomorrow, so I need to know what a fair offer would be on the cab. It is in nice shape other than a busted marquee and the fucked buttons/stick. It is clean and in nice working condition otherwise. (no burn in, no big scuffs or gouges, and strong, clear sound) I figured I'd use the broken buttons to my advantage and drive the price down. Just looking for some suggestions so I don't embarrass myself when I make an offer.

Sorry to ramble, that was a terribly written post.:emb:

I'm not sure..Usually when If I look to buy a cab I hope-look to only spend $250.00 $300.00

If I really like the game and get it for $300.00 then I feel It was worthwhile.
Even with some fixing of things as that's the fun of it..

I almost bought a dedicated Raiden 2 cab a few years ago ..but I had no room for it..(long story)

...............
Do you know what the other 5 cabs in the back of the theater are..?

So did he get back to you with a price? Raiden 2 is a pretty fun game...

Yea, I went up there and talked with the owner in person.

I offered him $200 cash and he thought that was ridiculous. He countered with $600 and I told him to have a nice day and left.

Hopefully, he will come to his senses and realize what he has and its value. Then maybe he will call me back with a reasonable offer. I wont spend more than 275-300 though, so it probably wont work out.

Don't feel bad. I remember offering $20 for a loose Samurai Shodown MVS cart to a Laundromat owner a while back, he wanted almost twice the amount I offered. I immediately left after that.

By the way, my first time ever seeing a "shmup" in the Wild was in Mexico... It was ESPrade. I swear, the Arcade scene is so much bigger in Mexico than it is here in the United States. :buttrock: King of Fighters 2002 is very popular, especially the bootleg versions. :annoyed: I also saw a dedicated KOF XI cab... no one was playing it...

Fair is a subjective word man...

I'd say that $200 is a fair price for you and $600 is a fair price for him....

But I wouldn't pay more than $300

Let him take a bath on this one if need be.

Possibly so, but I honestly thought he was joking when he mentioned $600. Trying to sell a semi-broken cab that makes maybe 10-20 bucks a week for $600 just seems a bit greedy to me. Oh well, I'll be out of this rural area soon and within driving distance of Atlanta so hopefully I can find a vertical cab for my shmups so I can get my T.V. off its damn side.:loco:

There were 5 total. The first was Raiden II and then...Tekken Tag, Galaga (an absolute piece of shit, terrible condition), one of the cruisin' USA games and area 51.

I think we all should realize that most people who own arcade machines for profit know next to nothing about them. I think I finally decided that after this deal here. I guess, given the fact that he most likely doesn't know the second-hand arcade market well, his offer wasn't completely crazy. 600 may be what he pays when he gets a used cab in so he just decided to charge the same.

The only time I've paid over $150 for a PCB was for that. I feel that it was completely worth every penny.

I went to Mexico a couple years ago, but there was no arcade scene to be found. It may have been because I was in a relatively poor area. Pretty cool that SNK has a good following south of the border though!

I'm sure 200 dollars was a fair offer for that Raiden 2 cab. Sometimes people overprice their shit. 600 is just stupid, especially considering the condition.

Cool story. I just saw a Giga Wing 2 "in the wild" today, at school of all places! Never noticed it before.

My school also has DDR Extreme, SFIII:TS, a Neo 4-slot, CvS2, GGXXblahblahblah, Tekken 5, and a few other great games. Unfortunately no one plays them...they just play ping-pong all the time :(

Wow, that is one solid assortment there. What was in the 4-slot?

What part of Mexico? I'm not sure if its true or not, but "Arcade Shock" claims that King of Fighters 2002 was first introduced in Mexico... Another thing that really caught me by surprise was the fact that I saw an Astro City in my City. I almost wanted to buy it from the owner immediately, but the condition was horrendous! Arcades don't necessarily have actual Arcade games, but Xbox systems! I saw a couple of kids playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas! :lolz:

I spent most of my time in Jiutepec, but I did go to other parts of Morelos and even to Mexico City for a day. I saw one arcade in Mexico City, but it had maybe 5 cabs dating back to the 80's or maybe early 90's.:crying:

Maybe I wasn't in the right part of town?

That's awesome! My buddy in Cleveland, TN just had a guy ask him if he wanted a free Galaga machine and a Ghost's N' Goblins cocktail table. Why is everyone scoring arcade machines except me! ! ! :crying:

Unfortunately, I don't have one either.:crying: I'll be up around Atlanta after I graduate in early May, so I should have plenty of chances to get one.

Indeed it is, but I didn't really like it much. It smelled like piss and most of the people I met were bitchy.

Most of Morelos is pretty cool though. I went down to Mexico because I had to fulfill 200 hours of community service and a mission trip group "adopted" me so I could get them. I hated the the group, but they let me work on the house-building rather than mission work. (I'm an atheist, so I would have been thrown out anyways) After 8 p.m. I was free to do whatever I wanted so I roamed around the little villages. It is amazing how hospitable some of the villagers are. Every five minutes you are invited to a dinner, a fiesta or some other social event. These people were freakin' party animals and I now no longer wonder why Mexico sometimes gets a bad reputation for work ethic.

Plus, I was 15-16 at the time (looked even younger, probably) and they definitely knew it, but anyone would let me get drunk as hell, even in public restaurants or bars. The best part is, Mexican chicks are really easy.:buttrock:

My 200 hours of community service was more of a vacation than a punishment.

Anyways, that was pretty much the worse case of rambling I've ever displayed. Back to the raiden 2 cab...

The guy called me back today and asked if I still wanted it. I told him I did, but couldn't pay what he was asking. He said I could make another offer, so I said $300 and he turned it down again and told me he simply couldn't go lower than $450. I decided to just drop it, really not worth that to me. The search for a cab starts again next weekend...

I'm so jealous of the Gng cocktail cab. i would love one of those But in ireland finding anything to do with arcades is harder then finding a Leprechaun.

It is generally best not to go to People that buy the machines from a arcade distubtor, its best to go to a Unknown place sort of small that doesnt know anything about the price of there stuff. Thats where i have got my best deals, like buying a xmen vs streetfighter game and getting the machine for $20 shipped to my house. Stuff like Mvs 1slots,4slots and mvs games for dirt cheap and a 40" standup of Rage racer for $100. And if you do alot of transactions, they usually chuck in a game or 2 for free or a Mvs board.

Anyway good luck on your search hope you find it.

Thanks man, I found a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 cab that I may buy. It is 4 hours away though, so the price would have to be right.
