I managed to sit down with Sin City Brewery's Weisse and Light beers. The Weisse is easily one of the best Hefeweizens I've ever had. It's a touch sweet, a little spicy, and refreshing. Very clove-heavy with an unusually pleasant banana aftertaste.

Their Light beer... tastes like water. Kinda sad since the rest of their selection is pretty stellar, but ah well.

It is just kinda the way things go with light beers. Many brewpubs have them in their lineup to appeal to those that will not likely like beer to begin with. Here our Smoky Mountain Brewery has a light and by comparison to other 'lights/lites' it is a pretty good beer but compared to the rest of their lineup, by far the weakest. Does Sin City bottle their beers?

Posting about it got me motivated to pull them out of the new beer cellar.

CIMG1594.jpg

So I opened the paper wrapped bottle of Liefman's Goudenband last night. Turns out it was a 2006 bottle.

It was terrible, a completely flat, oxidized mess. There was evidence of some leaking on the paper so I can only assume the cork did not hold up.

Both of my 1999s that I have had have been miles better. I've got one other bottle that believe is another 2006 I'll have to open and see how it is. I would love to get a taste of what a fresher bottle is like.

Sadly, they don't bottle their beers. It's only available on tap and at certain locations around the city. I eagerly await the day they do decide to start bottling.

Not sure if you've seen this, but I noticed a month or so ago, Maredsous tripel's new sexy packaging on the shelves...well, the Maredsous 8's got the same facelift. I freakin' love the new look. Been on a real Maredsous kick lately, plus it's so much cheaper than my other beers. :buttrock:

Luckily opened my other 2006 bottle last night and it was perfect. Lightly carbonated big time tart and acidic.

Got one bum bottle. But the one last night made up for it. I have loved both of the 1999s I have opened so far and look forward to opening one or two each year to see how they are doing.

Also toured the Sam Adams brewery which wasn't that great in itself, but I did get to sample and vote on two of their potential new releases, Coffee Stout and Blackberry Witbier.

Quoting myself from back in August.

The Blackberry Witbier won the contest and is now out in Knoxville.

Also Boulevard Irish Ale and other spring seasonals have started showing up.

Any recommendations for non-bitter beers that I can pick up from the supermarket (Safeway, Savemart, etc.)? Guinness & Newcastle are good but still a tad bitter. I'm guessing I need something malty?

Sorry, Zima has been axed.

Found a tripel that I love pixeljunkie...

Unfortunately it is a limited bottling of 700 cases that I bought back in the summer in Atlanta.

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/allagash-curieux/38037/

Bourbon barrel aged tripel.

I'm currently working to dwindle down my large collection of 22oz to 750mL bottles, they are quite simply more than I usually want to drink. So in the future when I can I will be opting for the 33cL or 12oz bottles if possible and buying less large bottles.

Also thinking I may make a trip to Winston-Salem, NC for the release of this fantastic beer on February 7th.

dude, both those sound really rad.

I've been drinking a pretty steady stream of Mardesous 8 for whatever reason [new packaging romanced me I think] But I picked up a few new bottles the other night.

Moinette Bruin: HORRID, I don't even wanna talk about it

Kona Special Release Coffee Porter: haven't tried...anxious to!

----

Sidenote: I am hunting for Bar Bar Honey Ale...can't find in these parts, lemme' know if you spot any.

Just a heads up - I received my notification email today that beverages and more has the first shipment of the limited edition 2009 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine. This is a seasonal beer which is hard to come by even here in CA. I had 3 of these in one night a few years back and this really blew my hair back. I just picked up 6 sixers for my beer fridge here at home.

It is also avail via bevmo.com http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=3086

No excuses people -- order up!

EDIT: Wow they are almost sold out already!

Another SN beer we can't get in TN because of our 6% laws. I've gotten to try it once and I might have had a bum bottle because I got such a sweet beer, everyone says it is this hugely hoppy barley wine. I'd be up to trying another bottle if I can get one.

Anyway, buddies are coming over tonight for some Mexican food and I put together a nice stout lineup to try.

Allagash Black
Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast
Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout
Rogue Imperial Stout
Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout
Southern Tier Oat

I have two favorites that are commonly available and not too expensive: Guinness and Killians Irish Red.
like you said, Guinness is rather bitter, but it's about the most enjoyable bitter beer a man can drink, imho.
Killians is on the sweet side. Not a fruity kind of sweet, not syrupy, but just a little sweetness to it. It's certainly not bitter. So try it. ;)

My sister just got back from Peru so now I have three of Peru's "finest" beers.

I'll throw up some links when I get home (i'm at her house now) - I checked ratebeer. They all seem pretty mediocre/drinkable but nothing special.

Still pretty awesome, and i'm excited.

I really want some of that horrible Africa fermented stuff.

New Boulevard year round offering coming in March. A currently unnamed Maibock is also scheduled to be a new seasonal offering likely in late Spring before the Zon shows up.

And then to join the Smokestack lineup this year:

Spring - Imperial Stout
Summer - Double Witbier
Fall - Dopplebock
Winter - Barleywine

Man I wish we got their 750s, might have to commission Lagduf to send some my way.

Also word on the street is that Hoegaarden, Goose Island, and Kona will be bringing some of their under 6.5% stuff to the Knoxville market.

Was getting around to editing some photos from the past 6 months, and I found a photo of one of my favorite beers. In fact it was the very type/brand of beer that turned me onto beer at the same location --I previously hated the stuff, mostly because I was trying only crap (what else to expect in college?). Then one day, spending time in Pasadena before the annual USC/UCLA game, I went with a buddy to the local Gordon Biersch brewery in old town and had a draft of the Gordon Biersch Hefeweizen. Holy cow, I was in love.

I don't assume their numerous airport branches have the same quality, but the brewpubs --at least this one-- pours one of the best beers you can have (and I don't just like them in summer months).

In this case it was after a very hot day in the LA Coliseum, watching and yelling during the USC-Ohio State game. Since we ended up trampling the Buckeyes, I took my Ohio State friends who'd traveled with me to Old Town and we had some brews and food. Lemon only adds to it.

Damn, I don't get a chance to drink this stuff out here --just looking at the beer makes me thirsty. I remember I was so enthralled by this brew that, back in 2001, I bought two of their glasses just like the one I'm holding here.

I'll be ALL OVER Boulevard Imperial Stout when it hits.

Boulevard stepped up their game with the Smokestack series for sure.

I'll check out the IPA as well as i've sort of been developing a taste for hoppier beers, though nothing super hopped yet.

Am I the only one who doesn't like a lemon in my beer? I consider it a criminal act.

Are you opposed to oranges?

I don't mind the beer in fruit thing. If it suits your taste, now if I'm wanting to seriously rate a beer and say how good is X? No fruit.

Anyway what did anyone drink for the Super Bowl last night?

I've got a pretty rocking headache right now it isn't as bad as it was at 6 this morning though.

Had a couple Blue Moons and Yuengling Lagers

Then we had a few dark beers.
Goose Island Bourbon County Stout
Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast

Then moved on to some more interesting session beers. Sierra Nevada ESB and New Belgium 1554

and closed off the night with shares from two bottles of Bells Expedition Stout, one that was exactly 2 years old, the other was 6 days short of a full year.

So any other beer drinkers up to anything?

I don't get into work until late tomorrow so I'm gonna start working on some of these beers in the fridge.

Delirium Nocturnum
Chimay Red
J.W. Lee's Harvest Ale Matured in Lagavulin Whiskey Casks
Spezial Rauchbier Lager
BFM Cuvée du 8ème
Oud Beersel Oude Geuze

Slowly dwindling my way too massing cellar collection down. Time to start focusing on things I want to intentionally age (Thomas Hardy's Ale...mmm) and not just buy too much that I can't physically drink it within six months.

I cracked open my first few bottles of Ginger- Ale...

Pretty nice... But some are more Ginger than others... And some are sweeter as I wasn't paying much attention when pouring sugar for secondary fermentation.

Good thing my kits are 2.5 gallons... I get sick of one style quickly... I don't know what I'd do if I had 5 gallons of this stuff.

Next up:
A basic Stout... I'm going to add bananas and oatmeal to the fucker.
