hey guys, I read on another board that Gameland would be closing forever on April 30th. God damn, that really sucks. :( It was a nice place, despite the terrible IIDX screen. It always sucks to see a REAL arcade have to call it quits. :oh_no: damn....
* * * CONFIRMED: Gameland is indeed shutting down for good * * *

Thanks for the heads up on this, BBH. Called over to Gameland as soon as I read your post. Spoke with one of the managers and she confirmed that Gameland will be going out of business at the end of this month. Their final day of business will be this Saturday, 4/24/2004. They'll be having a lock-in from 10a.m. all the way 'til 2a.m. -- admission is $10. I was told that Gameland simply wasn't getting enough business to keep operating -- apparently, the property's landlord opened a computer LAN cafe thing somewhere else in the same plaza, and that had pulled away a LOT of Gameland's customers. Gameland is planning on selling off some of their arcade cabinets (the fighter cabs, in particular), and the rest will be routed out to other arcades in the Las Vegas area -- for example, the IIDX machine is going to the arcade at Circus Circus Hotel/Casino.

@BBH:
I'm assuming you got this info from a DDR website (the manager I spoke with knew that Gameland's closure was being discussed in a DDR forum). If so, can you post a link here to the site? better yet, the forum thread itself?

Man, this really sucks. After Gameland closes, Las Vegas is really gonna be hurting for a decent game center (besides Dinodoedoe's apartment, that is).

What the hell...?

Gameland's the only decent arcade in the city!! Chris, I'll be working from 7-3 that day, so definitely swing by my work to pick me up. I'm all up for throwing down at the arcade one last time.

Cheat -- use Gouketsuji Oume and her Ryuusei Ranbudan (63214 + A or C).

NeoTheranthrope -- you seem to keep track of what Las Vegas arcades have what games: should we task you with the responsibility of finding us a new place to play on Sundays? Can you put together a suggested locations list?

God dammit this BLOWS!

They've always had pretty decent sized amount of customers, so I'm really surprised that they'd be going out of business. I don't understand why they couldn't have just opened up a LAN cafe there and kept the party going. I really don't want to have to rely on Mary Kay's again either, as their Neo cabs (and everything else) are always fubared, and they're very slow on getting any new releases, especially Neo ones. :\

I'll do my best to get there.

Well, dispite having the highest per capita arcade ratio this side of the Kanto Bay region... I can say that the pickings for good arcades are slim.

Gameland = dead

Mary K's = teh_suck

Gameworks = teh_suck and expensive review

The best off-strip arcades are in the Orleans and The El Cortez (?!)

The Orleans, sadly, has the largest selection of non-driving/gun/gimmick games off of Las Vegas Blvd.

The El Cortez has the largest number of MVS machines together currently in one place. A whole 3 machines. All with old-ish games and in need of maintance.

On Strip, there is the Luxor, New York New York, and Circus Circus.

The Luxor is big, has a decent selection, and isn't too expensive. Unfortunately, it seems to have fallen on hard times of late. the machines haven't been kept up as they should and they haven't gotten anything new in a while.

New York New York, was and as far as I know -is- the best strip arcade. Unfortunately, my info may be obsolete. I haven't been in there since august of 2001, due to their habit of treating everyone who wears a backpack (I.E. me) like a terrorist.

Circus Circus back in the day -was- the most-est awsom-est arcade EVAR!!!11 Today, it is a sad shadow of it's former self, but compaired to it's compitition *cough-gameworks-cough*it's not too bad. It's biggest flaw is: it's selection of games is a mile wide but only an inch deep. It has many, many genires but only one or two example of each.

Out of town, lies the best arcade in this entire cursed state: Buffalo Bill's

Buffalo Bill's is in the tiny "town" of Primm (formerly, Stateline) Nevada. The whole purpose of the place is to distract tourists who already drove 200 miles, from driving the additional 30 to Vegas. And distract it does. The arcade is a big multileveled affair, larger than the Luxor's or the NY NY's. It's selection of games is both wide and deep, with a ton of genires, usually with the best examples of each and a very good selection of both old and new games. The machines are resonably well kept, but the kids there who play on them are a problem sometimes, due to asshole parents using the arcade as cheap daycare.

I've wanted to do a Neo field-trip or something up there, because it really -is- a good arcade (and because it's one of the places that I can't just go to on the cat bus)

it's doubtful the Neo-Geo cabinets would go anywhere else, huh... so much for those Shock Troopers 2nd Squad scores living on :(
Thanks, BBH. Started digging around right after I posted and ran across that very site. Didn't even know it existed 'til today. Are you a registered member with that forum, or a lurker. If you're registered, I wonder if you wouldn't mind posting a reply in one of those threads with a link to this page in this thread (just to kind of put together these 2 disparate groups, both upset at the loss of Gameland).

Cool. I'd like to be there right at 10a.m. when this thing kicks off (hey, NeoTheranthrope -- this means you need to be ready early, 'kay? :glee: ). As long as I let management know that I'll be ducking out for about 30 mins to pick up another customer, I don't think I'll have any problem being re-admitted to the lock-in. Send me a PM sometime tomorrow to remind me that I'm supposed to pick you up at WORK this time (don't want to forget).

Seems to me the landlord could've worked out an arrangement to make the LAN facility a part of Gameland itself -- that way he could've had both types of gaming in his plaza, instead of one killing off the other. Then again, the BBS linked to by BBH seemed to hint that Gameland's management had some kind of standing agreement with the landlord that no other games facilities would be opened in the plaza -- apparently the landlord didn't honor that agreement.

Fygee, man, this is your last chance to join the rest of us for a Gameland NEO get-together. Leave the family hog-tied in a broom closet for the day if you have to -- you simply have to be there for this.

BTW, Fygee: another LV local, going by the handle KumagaiToshiro, posted this thread on the topic of Gameland's impending closure at MadMan's Cafe. Just wanted to point the thread out and ask you to post a reply there as well (you and I are the only 2 LV n-g.com folks I know of who also post at mmcafe).

Quick solution to the NYNY problem: leave the backpack at home, wear clothes with more pockets.

I second your motion to do a NEO roadtrip to Buffalo Bills. We could make a whole day of it, what with the arcade, the restaurants, and the roller coaster. Who else would be up for something like this, and what days of the week do each of us have off? I work Tues-Fri, so I'd be available Sat, Sun, or Mon.

I was interested in finding out what Gameland was asking for some of their cabinets, and also interested in having your opinion (as our local expert) on their condition/value.

The manager also mentioned that some of the DDR crowd were talking about bringing food, pot-luck style, and making a big thing out of this -- one of them was even talking about bringing a BBQ grill. I was thinking of trying my hand at another cake (to see if I can redeem myself after the Billy Kane cake fiasco). Anyone else got some ideas for simple-to-make/-eat/-cleanup food items?

@BBH: if you're able to post in the DDR forum you linked to, can you ask if they're still going ahead with their pot-luck food plans?

Just talked to Mickey today and he informed me that he will NOT sell any of his MVS cabs. He said, "They make such perfect route machines." Damn, and all of his DDR's have been sold already. The reason he is closing up the arcade is that the landlord was in breach in contract because of the computer store having LAN games and such. He was breaking even and that is after his profit margine has fallen 30%. I don't blame him for closing since nobody ever spent any money at his Arcade! TOO many people just sitting around playing Yu-Gi-oh and their Gameboys!:shame: Oh well, he told me that he might open up another arcade if he can find a cheap enough rent and a location that will allow an Arcade @ their location. That is why if Mickey or anyone else opens a decent Arcade again, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ARCADE! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! :very_ang:

That screams lawsuit right there if you ask me.

I'll try my utmost to get there, even if I have to lock everyone in the attic and crawl there using only my lips. :p

I wish there was some rich, local Neo fanatic that had a house full of cabs or something that we could hang out at. ;) Outside of that, I don't really know where else we could go. I'm sure as hell not going to the stankfest that is Mary Kay's, that's for sure. The Koreans that go there are mean and the owner scares me. :p

Are you serious -- Cheeseboy Comics got kicked out of their primo location? What the hell happened, man?!?

Cheeseboy forced to move? Gameland closing down? Dash no Chris boycotting soda for a 3rd straight week? A planet where apes evolved from men? Bart Simpson on the side of law and order? Has the whole world gone topsy-turvy?

Thanks much for the update on the sitch at Gameland, DDD. Definitely hope they can re-establish themselves somewhere else in the near future. Too bad about the MVS cabs. Thanks for the link to the recent thread activity at VBSG, NeoTheranthrope -- I'd been wondering if the 55" cabs were being sold or routed out. Iroki Jen's post that they're asking $1000 apiece confirmed what I'd been predicting: that they'd cost more than I've really got available at the moment (not that I'd have any idea how I'd get one of those monsters into my house...).

@Fygee: thanks for bumping the Gameland post at mmcafe -- looks like it's brought another LV local (TeirusuCSS) out of the woodwork.

Hey, all. Yep, same guy from MMCafe. lol

I'm ready to go down to Mary K's sometime and petition the owner to take the word "arcade" off of the sign. Sure as hell doesn't look like one to me. Need to get the people that play CS there some freakin' headphones.

As for rich Neo fans, too bad one of the big casino moguls isn't one. Get some Steve Wynn money and build something the likes of which has only been seen in Japan.

Primo location?!?! LOL not anymore, since green valley casino opened up and took all the good movies the location turned to shit in a handbasket. I remember when the parking lot was full everyday at night, now it's barely half full. So were heading towards eastern and warm springs at the old replay toys...or the warm springs and spencer locations...both cheap either way the cost is cut in half then the old place, and the other place wanted to keep on raising rent on shitty local. All the businesses are gonna leave from the ridicolous(sp I know) rent raising from Triple 5...or Triple 6 in my opinion.

We're hoping to get back on track at the end of this month...Colby is tired of the ebay selling he had to do.

Peace,
Tom :loco:

While accuracy in advertising is a desirable ideal, I'm pretty sure Las Vegas Code Enforcement would have an ordinance or two that would prohibit a sign reading "Mary K's Shithole." :p

If I'd've hit that $110,000,000 lottery I played in Truckee, CA back in 1990, I'd've used it as a downpayment on the Landmark Hotel/Casino before they imploded it, and ultimately converted into my own version of the SC Hotel in "Card Fighters."

Oh, man -- that completely sucks. Man, I remember what a great deal Colby had going with the theater management for his advertising. Give him my best, and tell him to hang in there.

How big are the new locations you're considering compared to the original location? bigger? smaller? about the same? If Colby ends up with more floorspace, would he consider putting in more arcade cabinets (I know he had 2 or 3)? Maybe he could expand the video game selection a bit and try to draw more of the arcade gaming crowd in?

And the kicker to all this is for me is that pretty soon, I would've been living a block away from Gameland. They must've caught wind that I was moving. :idiot:

Well, I know I'll be there about 5:30, 6 pm. Gotta wait for my friend to get off work, which is at five, then we gotta drive from Charleston and Nellis to Gameland. Then, rocking on will commence. :buttrock:

I'm hoping to leave the house sometime between 9 and 10a.m., pick up NeoTheranthrope on the way, and hit Gameland as close to 10a.m. as possible.

I'll have to duck out briefly around 2:45 or so to go pick up Domino-chan; we should be back at Gameland by about 3:20.

EDIT: A late start for me today, as usual -- the NEO-GEO cakes took longer to make than I'd estimated. Oh, yeah: I'll be bringing two 2-layer cakes bearing the NEO-GEO logo to Gameland's final lock-in. The 2nd cake has a blue layer and a yellow layer -- unfortunately I wasn't thinking when I did the first cake and I forgot to add the food coloring to each layer, so that cake has a plain white interior. Anyway, just wanted to do something for the Gameland staff on behalf of the Las Vegas members of neo-geo.com for playing host to us nearly every Sunday these last several months.

It's 12:45pm now, and I'm about to go pick up NeoTheranthrope. God willing and the creek don't rise, we should hit Gameland by about 1:30. Hope to see y'all there!

Got to Gameland around 2pm. Stayed til 2am. LOTS of people there tonight. Fun impromptu tournaments on CVS2 and MVC2. Nice to meet a few more faces from the forums. NeoTheranthrope, Domino-chan, and I all took pictures. I'd write more, but I just got home a few mins ago, it's after 5am, and I've been up since 6am Saturday. Going the hell to bed. G'night.
