New (old) PS2 + Hard Drive = now what? (HDLoader / HDAdvance)

I'm gonna jump on this hard drive bandwagon while the iron's still hot. The other day I bought myself a new PS2 (SCPH-3500) with network adapter and a 300gb Maxtor hard drive. Now some questions for the more well-versed aficionados:

-What else do I need? Just a program like HDadvance/HDloader -- or do I need swap magic as well?

-HDAdvance seems the way to go because it has a lot of support and is being updated. Will it allow me to transfer game files to my PS2 via the ethernet adapter? This method is appealing because it's quicker than reading the disc through the PS2's optical drive, and it's no wear on the laser. If HDAdance can't, how can I use this transfer method?

-Is there a definitive guide for this process available online. I've found FAQs scattered around, but so far nothing concise.

Answers to these and further advice will be much appreciated.

Buy this thank me later. Use winhiip (that's what I use).

I'll post more later. Research the memory card exploit at ps2hd.com or ps2hd.net, I forget, that should get you started.

I wish I never got rid of my old PS2

now if only it didn't cost a hundred bucks to a fix an HD to the slim PS2s

what I'm trying to get at is:

I'm sure the route you went is better than burning discs

With this is it possible I can put HDAdvance on the hard drive and have it boot up so I don't need the disc?

Yes, it is possible to put it on the hdd, however, I don't know how to do that. I use the memory card exploit and once the ulaunchelf boots up (triggered by an old psx game) I then go to my mass (usb) storage device and boot hdloader v.08b and so I don't actually own a copy of hdadvance or the original hdloader. The hdloader v.08b is the latest patched version as far as I know so it has the best compatibility anyways so I wouldn't bother with actually buying either hdadvance or hdloader since they're outdated. One thing to remember is you'll need a way to get the exploit file to your memory card (I used a max drive 128mb I bought at best buy for $30). Go to ps2-scene.org or ps2hd.com if you need some more information. I think you should be able to figure most of this out in a couple hours. PM me if you really get stuck.

That device I gave you a link to before is what I use to get my games onto the hdd with winhiip. I tried to network my computer right to my ps2 with a crossover cable, but I had too much trouble getting it set up (I had it connected and working, but then it stopped - you have to fuck around with ip addresses and subnet masks, that shit gets confusing).

I'm sure there are many members here (including me) who would be willing to give you their exploit files if you don't want to buy a Action Replay, etc.

All you really need is WinHIIP to format the hard drive correctly, and a premade exploit save. Just searhc around for one, they're all over.

Transfering isos though a network cable is possible, easy and very convenient, but the problem is that it is very slow, maximum speed is 2.11 MB/s.

The easiest way is to just buy a HDAdvance disc, and it boots like an original game. However it's cheaper to install a HDloader in the memory card and use a PSX CD to boot it, but you'll need some way to insert a file on the memory card.

Uh, no, it's 2 MegaBytes with the latest HDL_dumb, kern. A 200MB iso transferred in less than 2 minutes. I think it's a reasonable speed as I don't have to pull out the HD from the ps2. I do have to disbale the firewall though, otherwise it only does like 0.3 MBps.

what-the-fuck

where is this new version, and the old version was still 2mb

hdl_dumb is just a frontend to hdl_dump, the real tool

Well, I bought that wire that SnairDogg suggested, as well as HDAdvance 3. Winhiip worked well to load my games (as well as some grabbed from BT), although Shadow of the Colossus isn't booting up at all. Is there a site with game patches I can apply to files like these, or do I need to use an updated version of HDLoader?

Of that note, I put an image file of an HDL boot disc onto the hard drive, but failed to boot. Is there some way I can put it onto a memory card (either through HDA's server function or loading another program on the hard drive) so that I can use and updated edition?

Well, the only thing you can use with slims is the usbextreme software as far as I know, but I'm not using a slim so I can't answer too many questions about that sort of thing. If you want to get into this hdloader scene I think it'd be in your best interest to grab a fat ps2 v4-v9 (shouldn't cost you more than about $80).
