Good news everyone! /Professor Farnsworth

So went to pick up some carts this morning from a local vendor. Guy was extremely nice and helpful. He had a FAT stack of mini marquees with him as well so I started to look through them to see what I could purchase. He then tells me "I've got all the mini marquees scanned." I was floored and told him I'd buy them off of him. He just burned a disc for me and gave it, didn't charge me anything extra. He also had a ton of candy marquees and dip sheets. I found a set for KOF 2002 English version, I know for a fact that neogeosoft does not have this on their list. I told him I'd purchase it from him as well and he just gave me that as well! Great fucking guy, I'll definitely do much more business with him in the future. I have to go through the disc and I'll upload what's on there later. I think there are 116 different mini marquees.

Sweet news! Once you have a chance to go through it all, let me know, and I can help get you a login setup to Arcade Crusade. Probably about time for me to setup a "full set" gallery and take the best scans from each set to make one good master collection. I

That would be great!

I quickly went through the disc and it seems some of the marquees are dupes like they scanned one a few times. There are some that are in highish resolution that I have not found online such as Breakers and Andro Dunos so that's good! I need to clean them up a bit as well (crop them etc). I'll go through them this weekend.

So got some new marquees in today that I was not able to find on the ArcadeCrusade site. These are all the Japanese only games that are like mahjong and quiz games. Also, Legend of Success Joe.

I have questions.

I can see there is a definite ebay side rising cost to these mini marquees that now even this one dude selling $10 reproductions on the surface looks fairly enticing. He's the only one at it daily on there so I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. Are his of any good quality with the detail solid enough, and do they deal with light from behind to appear like an original well enough too to be worth it? If not, what kind of method could someone do on their own to make a set of mini marquees or even a one off that has similar quality enough to pass muster as a solid alternative and what would the cost be on the low (1) vs doing like say (10) or more?

I'd like to get some mini marquees for both existing games with, but also stuff like Crossed Swords 2 which never did hit retail but was redone for MVS.

Been a while, but a bump.

I had to go through and fix all of the photo links from Photobucket, but I should have everything fixed in the main post and some bleedover into Post #3 since it caps at 20 images now even when linked.

The main reason to update was I did some additional looking and decided to split off a few more titles to be more specific about what art is or isn't available because it turns out a few games had official mini marquees in Japanese kits even if they didn't in the English kit. If anyone has good scans of these, I'd love to have them, I found a good Matrimelee, planning at some point to possibly remake them with the English art/controls in the same style.

kof01jpn.pngmatrimjpn.jpgmslug4.jpgss5jpn.jpg

I did find out (again...I posted in this thread, lol) about the Neo Geo Online Collection for PS2 that had reprinted mini marquees including the KOF01, there are minor changes on the bottom to distinguish the reprint. Some things to note, I think these mini marquee also had SamSho5, but I haven't been able to find any photos of one. It also included a mini for the Atomiswave SamSho6. (Updated with better pictures below) Any scans if anyone has these too would be appreciated. Collection 1 has SamSho5 and 6. Collection 2 has KOF01.

The packaging and a sampling of the included minis showing the SamSho5 and SamSho6 mini marquee.

And a photo showing all of Collection 1 and Collection 2 but with minis overlapped.

Someone did make a SamSho5 in English from the English art that is basically what the Japanese one looks like except for the ABC and qcf+CD attacks on the bottom right replacing Nakoruru which are on the right half of the English art flyer. I can't find a scan of that flyer, if anyone has it I'm looking.

The last thing was just to put in here that Lee Gray posted a while back about buying a 'prototype' sheet from ArcadeShock which had an unreleased Matrimelee and an orange Slug 4. He sold it shortly after so I don't know who still owns this sheet or if they would want to scan it, but if you have scans, interested of course as well.

017119.jpgmatrimeleeas.jpg

So what's left to find out. Metal Slug 5 and KOF03 only had Japanese label PCB releases, SVC Chaos was only an English label even in a Japanese PCB kit. The PCB kits don't seem to have mini marquees. The cart kits for Slug 5, KOF03, and SvC had English/Spanish/Japanese art flyers/dip sheets but were English labeled carts/boxes and had no mini marquees.

I found a couple photos of Japanese Sengoku 3 kits (Sengoku Legends 2001) and it doesn't seem like it came with a mini marquee. Samurai Shodown 5 Special was a Japanese only kit and only had Japanese art with no mini marquee. I have not been able to find photos of any Japanese Nightmare in the Dark or Zupapa! kits.

So tl;dr if anyone has any scans of any of these or if anyone has a Japanese kit of Nightmare in the Dark or Zupapa to see if those might include a mini marquee.

Sure, yeah I guess it was as much an info dump as it was a scan request.

Here would be the scans I'm looking for if anyone out there has them.

From Japanese kits:

King of Fighters 2001
Matrimelee (the one I have is pretty good here)
Metal Slug 4
Samurai Spirits Zero (Samurai Shodown V)

From English kit:
Samurai Shodown V art flyer

From ArcadeShock sheet (unlikely)
Matrimelee
Orange Metal Slug 4

*Removed unfinished Matrimelee, finished version in post #126*

Real quick and dirty, lose the transparency of the box, didn't replace all the copyright text with English equivalents at the bottom, and the English Matrimelee logo doesn't have the smaller Japanese text in the center.

Just a heads up, but that Japanese text in the middle of the logo says Goketsuji Ichizoku, which is the name of the larger series. You wouldn't want to lose that anyway, accurate to the English logo or not.

More hackjob work just to give an idea of what I'm aiming for. Would have to remake the background for the 'Maximum of 4 characters! Tactical Order Select'

Here is an English version of the Japanese Metal Slug 4 mini marquee. No consideration was given for aesthetics. This was just meant to be a creation from existing art of how SNK typically designed their English counterpart mini marquees based on the art flyers.

Same treatment for Samurai Shodown 5. This one already basically existed, but didn't have the two special techniques that were on the Japanese mini, plus the glut of trademark text and logos. Might need to see how readable this one is when printed at mini marquee size, lots of small text in the play instructions box. Edit: Resized the Special Action moves list to be more like the Japanese mini marquee rather than the English Flyer which allowed me to make the special techniques larger. Happy with this layout now.

Edit: Speaking of ignoring aesthetics. I will say that this is a rare occasion where the Japanese layout is definitely inferior to the English one. The logo covers up a significant amount of art and is on top of two of the 4 characters faces.

Here is a (better) scan of the Japanese King of Fighters 2001 mini marquee. Note: this is scanned from the plastic reprint version not the original paper version.

And here is an English-ized version of the Japanese mini marquee. Same kind of straightforward translation goal as the Slug 4 and SamSho5 above.

Also noticed while staring at the Arcade Shock test prints that something got goofed up in between that print and the final print on Metal Slug 5.

On the test print, the description text for A, B, and C is outlined. There seems to be no text for the D button. On the final print, the description text for A and B is still outlined, but C text of Grenades is now not outlined and then the D button is now X-ed out with added 'Not Used' text neither of which is outlined.

I know no one really cares...

I haven't been printing any yet, but I remember one of the pages doing repro minis had a spot for supplying your own images, I would have to go looking to see who that was again.

I tried a couple different repro places to compare and they're basically the same print material the only differences really were what files they were printing. They're definitely not going to be mistaken for real minis, but I find many of them to be perfectly usable in the cab.

When I get around to it I want my Slug 5 and Ghostlop minis printed and now probably the 'translated' Slug 4 maybe when I could justify getting a few others with an order.

Several of the minis I've done are for games I really have no interest in owning...
