I finally got to check this update out, extremely nice to have online multiplayer on these. I recently tried a few online matches out in Doom 1 & 2 from the 360 BFG collection... damn they were rough.

I had no idea those previous releases were so shitty until I tried these newer ones.

So I says to myself, I says, this Doom game would be so much better if Doomguy stopped to read a dead man's emails complaining about a lack of adequate mental health care.

What?

Doom 3 still fucking sucks

Nah, it’s okay. In era where it seemed these type of shooters were all but dead I don’t blame them for trying something different. It still took them a long time to get the series right again with Doom 2016.

Speaking of sucking, did you ever see the Doom movie?

Unfortunately, I've seen BOTH of them :( Definitely have some regrets there

Shooters were not dead and Doom 3 wasn't different at all. It was outdated from day 1 in both singleplayer and multiplayer as far as player movement, level design, gunplay, gameplay conventions.

Half Life 2, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2, Counter Strike Source, Counter Strike Condition Zero, Battlefield Vietnam, Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 2004, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Call of Duty Finest Hour, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, and Tribes Vengeance among others all released in the genre the same year as Doom 3. Doom 3 was just a slow, repetitive crawl through dimly lit corridors with horrible gunplay. Jumpscare, bunch of imps spawn behind you, walk to the next dark room, repeat for 15 hours. It's just such a mechanical, scripted, A to B slog of a game.

Doom 3 was the moment you realized id didn't have it anymore (and they proved it 10X over the next time out with Rage). It was their Michael Jordan with the Wizards moment. Everyone else was redefining what the genre was about and id countered with a flashlight. That's why everybody got fired, Doom 3 made no lasting impression on the genre, and Doom 2016 was a reboot.

You mistake what I said.

Arena “boomer”/“twitch” shooters were dead. I agree They attempted to pivot the franchise and largely failed ( 2016 and Eternal are fun take on the genre that I think is in the spirit of the original.)

FPS, certainly, weren’t dead. Do you think I’m retarded?

But arena shooters literally weren't dead. Halo 2 and Unreal 2K4 released that year and people liked them.

What they tried to do was showcase their new engine in the most cynical and creatively bankrupt way possible: by remaking a 1993 game in 2004 with 1999 gameplay. And then Half-Life 2 ate their lunch on the tech front anyway.

Halo isn’t an arena shooter. At least not in the sense of a Quake or Unreal. The movement is slow and the time to kill too high (in comparison.)

The fact we haven’t seen an Unreal Tournament in ages also speaks to the fact that that style of gameplay is dead (and has been for 20+ years.) I think Quake 3 Arena was the last great shooter in that style.

It’s clear Doom 3 was in development hell. Honestly, I forget what my point was other than to rile you up. You playing the new Dune game when it comes out, or nah? Or is the survival genre anathema to your taste?

I don't play shit on PC if I can't play it on GOG.

And, just to reiterate, Doom 3 sucked ass when it came out and everyone who liked it at the time sucked their own butts.

And Doom 2016 and Etenal are arena shooter as fuck.
