Hi all,

I have a neogeo aes 3-3 with no sound at all. Image is fine but no sound. I tried the built-in headphones input and there is a buzz but no sound too.

What can I check?

I don't see anaything "wrong" in the board, at least no caps busted, etc. I attach pictures of it.

Thanks in advance

I would start with replacing all caps on board, specially the ones that are in the sound cirquit which are all in the lower middle part of the board.
Capacitors can be bad (or worse shorted) without any external physical indications.

Thanks for the reply, is there any list of the caps so I can look for them? I tried to look for the list but I only found this one but not sure if it is accurate for 3-3 revision.

100uF 16v 7
10uF 16v 4
1uF 50v 4
2200uF 16v 1
220uF 16v 2
22uF 16v 3
4.7uF 25v 7
470uF 16v 1

Yes, it will take time but if I don't find them here (in Spain) I will get one from them.

Besides I think if the caps replacement fixes the problem I can try to apply the rgb and sound fixes too.

Replaced almost all the caps in the lower middle part of the board (all the caps shown in the picture are new). The only one missing is the big 2200 uF one. But still no sound and buzz in the headphones.

Tomorrow I will replace the ones in the upper part.

What more things can I check if changing the rest don’t fix the sound?

The continuity between the points referenced in the neo diagnostics bios is correct.

YM2610 I/O ERROR

YM2610 isn't responding to the Z80 reads and writes as expected. Most likely a bad trace between the Z80 and YM2610 but it could also mean a faulty 2610. This is the first 2610 test to check that it's actually functioning and accessible. Games will likely run but they'll be completely muted.

  • Z80 D0~D7 → YM2610 D0~D7
  • Z80 A0/A1 → YM2610 A0/A1
  • Z80 A2~A4 → NEO-D0 SDA2~SDA4
  • Z80 IORQ (20) → NEO-D0 IORQ (37)
  • Z80 RD (21), WR (22) → NEO-D0 SDRD (35), SDWR (36)
  • NEO-D0 2610RD (48), 2610WR (47), 2610CS (49) → YM2610 RD (59), WR (58), CS (57)

I completed the recap and the console is still with the same problem. No sound, buzz.

I measure the pin 56 from the yamaha and it is -5.XX V so I think the yamaha chip is ok.

Could it be the Z80?

Reach out to Jammanation X on facebook/instagram or try and get a hold of Xian Xi on here, he's the master of diagnosing this shit.

Changed Z80 and no news, still no sound.

Checked continuity between cart slot and Y2610 and between Y2610 and Y3016 and all is fine.

It is my Y2610 faulty? Because I didn't see any improvements.

Is there a way to get the sound from alternative points?

PS: is it normal the capacitor above the video ram (I think)? The 5863 component. I saw pictures of this board and others and it is the first I see with it. There is another cap below the board. You can see them in the first post.

If the diagnostic cart doesn’t report a comm issue then it’s not a connection issue.

Most likely a bad 2610, check the IRQ line if it’s high or low. If it’s low, replace the 2610.

thanks for the reply, well I’m not sure if I checked correctly the IRQ pin 56 but I measure 5.22 V between the pin and ground.

You might want to get a logic probe that has audio. It will really help to nail down where the issue starts.

If you don’t get even a hum, I’d check the preamp/amp outputs. You should at least hear a slight hum.

Yeah I think that's what you're looking for, not an expert here either.

Not sure, when I bought mine, it clearly said "with audio".

The difference is that when you probe a pin it will make a sound relative to the pin, if there is digital sound on that pin, you can hear it a little, when I first used it I was repairing a Puzzle Bobble cart and the audio sounded like PB dubstep through the logic probe.

Dev wiki has useful pinouts to check. It's helped me a lot for building and testing an audio project with the YM parts: https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php?title=LSPC2-A2

That's a graphics chip but mind the "8M" and "4M" pins. 8M goes to pin 63 of YM2610 and 4M is pin 6 on Z80. Not getting any audio unless those are working. If you get a logic probe those should also be pulsing but if all you have is a voltmeter you can check if you get around 2.5v on the clock pins. Your voltmeter is probably going to average out the clock to a half-5V reading. There's also pin 64 on the YM2610 which is a serial data clock output to the 3016, should check that too.

Thanks, I will check them tomorrow and post the results. I checked the pinouts for continuity to find bad traces but i don’t see any of them cut.

When you are testing the audio, are you checking from both the headphone jack and rear AV port?

Today I “broke” something putting the socket for the bios. I have 5v and gnd linked so i have to check all... I’ll keep you updated if I’m able to fix it...

What do you mean? If you're checking with a multimeter does it beep quickly once or is it a long tone?
