The only problem being, if they 'reproduce' them, they definitely won't be using 40 pin DIP roms on the PCBs. They'll use surface mount chips like any modern manufacture. They probably don't have the original print plates anyway, so they'll just be bootleg quality inserts and manuals with 'Now it's official!' stamps on them.

If 'collectors' were going to bothered by a Rerelease-bin-Saud, they would have to have had the same reaction to NCI stuff and they definitely don't.

Let's just wish for the following instead, at least they would be interesting historically:

Metal Slug alpha-ish build (tank only)
Dance RhythMIX
Anything MOTW2
Crystalis 2

Maybe they'll put a cart version of NTM Scotland out with the new series of Neo releases. I'd be happy enough with that, but more likely to get Metal Slug Tactics 2 I imagine.

The annoucement of a new "official" round of cart releases alone would send shockwaves through the community, make no mistake.

Ah well, let's not dwell on that any further, eh.

No more dreams, original o muerte it is.

We have many examples on other consoles. Licensed Columbus Circle reprints, or even Capcom's reprinted SNES games. These releases have little-to-no impact on the prices of the originals because of course they aren't identical to the originals.

Releasing new issues of home carts now would likely take a form similar to what @lithy is describing (economical surface mount chips) and the current collector's market for the originals would barely bat an eye.

Now, would such releases be compelling for collector's on a budget looking for a non-bootleg means of playing the games on official hardware? Sure. Would the re-releases themselves someday become collectable? Yeah, probably, but not on the same level as the originals.
