I can't say for certain, but I don't think this is going to be "Chinese junk".

Plaion are a well established company, previously known as Koch Media, and a subsidiary of Embracer Group - owners of Toaplan, Dark Horse Comics, among others.

I doubt they're going to seek damage to their reputation by putting out some half-assed cobbled together plastic and cheap rom boards original intended for a Teddy Ruxspin knock-off.

This is a company that, to be fair, makes the original SNK look like a homebrew developer.

Ah yes I’m not saying it doesn’t work as intended, just that it really just is a previously existing multi system handheld (with shoulder buttons and whatnot) with the branding Neo Geo slapped on top.

They could use a bit more effort, let’s say. Glad the new SNK seems to be steering away from these practices (hopefully).

I've bought some Plaion stuff (Atari-related) and it's all good quality, some of it got really heavy use and still holds up well. I don't think the AES+ (man, feels wrong to type that, even if it's sorta offishul now... dammit! :D) will be junk, of course it won't be late-80s style manufacturing but I just can't imagine they make lotsa compromises with it, why should they, times have changed, many manufacturing processes that were quite expensive before are much cheaper now so this shouldn't be an issue. Let's see.

It's also worth noting that Plaion and specially Ben pushed through with solving problems and delivering updates for the 7800+ and 2600+ consoles, initially there were some probs with the 7800's backward compatibility to 2600 games and PAL/NTSC issues but 99% of them got resolved. They really seem to care so if there are firmware probs with the AES+ (and there will), I guess we can expect a timely solution.

I’m guessing you won’t be adding the Uber Rare 35th Anniversary White Metal Slug to the Master list then :keke:
(By the way, I know you're joking, and I lol'ed.)

The Neo Geo's life as a console was 1990-2004. If they ever release a new game for this thing and make it NGH-274 it's technically going to be an official release, and someone will ask for it to get added to the list. But this is something new, and there's wikipedia for that. It's a revival, 22 years removed from the system's useful life. It makes sense to consider it a separate phenomenon.

Shock Troopers is now coming out on AES for the first time. Jimmies will be rustled.

I bet there’s more to come, Ironclad is a real possibility. I’d love to see an AES release of Neo Bomberman too but let’s not get ahead of ourselves as that one probably needs a few more licenses to sort out.

An official US Aero Fighters 3 would be lol.

Yeah, me too, more games that were never released on AES format.

I was thinking about if they work with a developer to release a completely new game, like they did on Atari.

And as much as I’d love that, they’d need to sell at least half a million consoles surely to make that viable? We can dream.

Probably already mentioned, but I am pretty sure I saw them on X looking for new pixel artists.

Someone on reddit listed "flash-based cartridges" as a reason they would cancel their preorder.

For $90, flash memory is an absolute necessity. It makes zero sense to mass produce something with a bunch of mask roms in 2026. And that's fine; nothing wrong at all with that.

To be clear, most modern memory is in some way flash-based. Switch and Switch 2 use non-volatile flash-based game cards.

They are not going to be using the same tech the OG SNK used, and I think if anyone thinks they will, are a bit deluded.

As I pointed out early on in this thread, if the OG SNK had been producing AES carts continuously since 2004, the tech inside the carts would have changed by now to keep production costs down.

Hell, the configs used in a late release like Metal Slug 5 are not identical to those used in 1991's Fatal Fury.

I find it a weak argument, that because time and technology have moved on, that these reissues are somehow inferior to what was produced 30 years ago.

Provided the ROM data is being provided direct from SNK and not being sourced from some spurious MAME release, then the games will be as intended, no?
