Genuine question: Why do people "collect" it to a point where they must keep it as pristine as possible? Is it to later sell it or? Can't think of any other reason because the moment we hit the grave, everything we thought was ours, goes to others.

It is because it fills some stupid primal brain need to have "Something Special" that others do not. I think that just makes collectards feel like they hold value in the world. Some of course try hyping it up for profit of course. It justifies their lizard brain actions.

Very True, the only places I ever saw TG-16 stuff was Circuit City, and a place that sold mostly stereo equipment called "The Good Guys!". Maybe they should have tried a little harder to break into the major retail chains and they would have done better in the US market.
I don't get that with cars either. I'm sure that when you drive those supercars that it's the best 15 minutes of fun ever.. but then it immediately comes with $150,000 maintenance procedure after those 15 minutes.
First TG16 I ever saw was a demo unit at TRU.
The reason most have come to accept is that the gaming division that NEC launched in the US was mostly experienced with PC's and had no idea what they were doing when it comes to game consoles. Almost anything would've been better (even partnering with Tonka like Sega did for a time). They learned their lesson and spun up Turbo Technologies with Hudson Soft in 1992, but it was too little too late by then.
I remember very much wanting a tg-16 back in the day but i never saw the console or games for sale anywhere. I was way more interested in early TG-16 games then early Genesis games. Such a missed opportunity, first the system had low availability and hardly any marketing, then they made baffling decisions with what games didn't get released outside of Japan. I would have been all over SF2CE and a six button pad if it had come out over here and actually been somewhere you could buy it.
As someone in the watch hobby, this was non-existent until 2019ish.
