I just got a broken neo geo 4 slot. I am having a Z80 error when it boots up. It looks like most of the sound area chips have been replaced with sockets.

I really need a schematic for this board. Any ideas for a quick fix, or a location of a schematic?

well, your first action should be pulling out and cleaning all socketed chips then, as well as verifying they are seated firmly after. then check for any broken solder spots, especially on the sockets, and any damaged traces around them and the z80.

There a 90% chance that if you replace the Z80 Cpu your board would work fine. Luckily since the Z80 is the size of your middle finger and easily enough to find replacing it should only have medium difficulties. Out of all the mai stream arcade systems on the market, the MVS has the highest component fail rate.

Smoking what? I have three MVS boards, a 2 for 5 years, a 6 for about a year and now a 4 slot. All were previously used arcade boards... the 2 slot was stamped as being first installed in 1990! Never one problem to speak of with any of these boards... What kind of problems make these boards the highest fail rate in the industry. Shit, Tekken 2 boards were mostly DOA when the game first came out. CPS2, etc commit suicide... but I have never heard of MVS problems except a few boards here and there needing to be cleaned.. chips reset, etc.

actually, the MVS multislots seem to have a high sound failure rate.. many boards have dead sound, I assume there is one component that dies after a while, but didn't figure out yet which it is. other than that, the MVS boards are as good or bad as other arcade boards of its time.

I have accidentally replaced the z80a cpu chip with a bad one, and the board wouldn't even boot or give me the z80 error.

I am assuming I will have to rebuild the circuit and check all the tracers.

A guy on the rec.games.video.arcade.collecting newsgroup says he has a schematic and he will post it on his web site. I will post the url here once I find it out.

Ha nruva, like I said through my personal experiences with them mvs units have a HIGH component fail rate. I gone through SIX of these units varying from the mini 1 slots to the 6 slots in under 5 years and all but the 1 slot I am currently using have failed. What is strage is that all of my bad mvs units had the same fault, work ram error as in bad ram chips and all were purchased from different salers and its only because I enjoy neo games so much that I keep buying more MVS units. I am a collector of various arcade hardware including cps 2 boards and I carefully maintain my own equipment, none of the rest of my boards have given me so much trouble. Speaking of cps 2 boards, they WERE designed to die as opposed to their failer being a act of God. I'm just offering my own personal experiences.

Where can I get these Z-80 chips at? I also have a problem with my 4-slot it says error check the MVS-slots 99/10/01, and then there's no sound.

Very interesting mainman, thanks for that info. Iif most of your errors are "work ram" ones, I assume that onboard RAM chips are going bad, and should be replaceable? And those chips are socketed, I believe . . .

As for the Z80 8-bit sound processor, I know it it not socketed, and would have to be desoldered, removed, and have a new one soldered in. I have an idea of where to get replacement Z80 and RAM chips, but if anyone knows for sure I'd be interested to hear it . . .
