I am always amazed at people being thrown by these types of sticks. The corners are so INCREDIBLY useful that to hear complaints just dumbfounds me.
Have you ever missed a down/back (low) block because the amorphous "circle" of the particular stick you were using didn't have both the "down" and "back" switches engaged? I have. And the thing is, almost every stick is slightly different. With the "corners" present, down/back is a notch you can hit very solidly and hold. Same for the forward or backward jump.
You want to jump in? Wham, hit the up forward corner and you are absolutely gonna jump in. Not straight up, not walking forward but jumping up+forward, like you want. No way you can miss it. Can you reliably hit Andy's launching kick, handspring thingy in the older FF's without having corners to hit? I can't. At least not reliably in the heeat of a fight.
I think that's why the Neo home sticks are so good. They essentially have a square in which one can move the stick that allows for INCREDIBLE precision.
Anyway, juts my two cents. I just can't imagine that the ease with which diagonals are achieved with this type of configuration could in any way be seen as a burden.

EDIT:
In response to your directional question, I don't think you can get 4 way sticks. If you are hitting the diagonal, you are by default engaging two switches. And besides, ALL the KoF's in Japan are on Candies. I seriously doubt that all of Japan is playing KoF and MOTW and whatever else with only four directions.
If you have an MVS board, is the test button working? There is a joystick and button test that is built in to it tha can show you which switches are engaged. That way you can know if a diagonal is engaging two switches as it should be. You'll have your answer.
