That's why the Nuggets are betting on so many young guys (10/18 dudes on their roster have played under 164 career regular season and playoff games); they are trying to get one last year under the 2nd apron next year because in 2 years Murray is due for a max extension (or supemax if he makes All-NBA this year). When that happens they'll have 2 more seasons before they have to start dumping guys like Porter, KCP, and Gordon to get under the apron.

It's a LOT more than that.

After the first apron, you can't acquire players in a sign-and-trade if it keeps you above the apron, you can't sign players who were waived midseason who made over $12.2 million (see: vets chasing rings like Kevin Love this year) and salary matching in trades has to be within 10% (instead of the usual 25%).

After the second apron, you can't include cash to make up the difference in trade values, you lose the $5 million dollar midlevel exception (which is how a lot of superteams bring on ring-chasing vets), and you can't create or use trade exceptions

Basically, a team like the Suns has very little recourse to improve after the 23-24 season except through the draft or dumping salary (which is made much more difficult by having to match salaries so closely AND being unable to send cash). This is how the NBA is attempting to end the superteam/player empowerment era by making it so that three people can't make max money without crippling their team's ability to sign players. Kyrie and James Harden can bitch and moan and demand trades all they want but any good team won't be able to take on their albatross contracts.

MJ cashing out at a good time, even thought they makes lots of money for him , but he still don’t wanna give anyone those monster contracts.
