Translated from French article:

I'm not a gamer at all. I admire the games, I notice things I critique with arguments but I do not play long. For cons, I collect pirate cartridges and copiers, everything is a bit obscure, everything is not really legal. In fact, I like them apart to see how everything is done.

Precision: SNES disk/cart copiers and Gameboy multicarts :) Unfortunately I can't really afford collecting fake mslug's.

No really, I like cracking things open to see how they work. The translation might be ambigous about the "not really legal part": I'm into buying, not selling.

I know it's possible to make easy money by selling converts or fake originals. I'd maybe do it if I couldn't pay rent and was threatened to be kicked out of my place, but I've got a job and am NOT close to that extreme need at all. I'm NOT willing to take any risks about ruining my name in the retrogaming community just to be able to buy a new TV set or a golden toilet seat.

As I said, it would be a shame, but if you don't trust me or the project, you can always cancel your igg participation.

I didn't mean to pass judgement. As I posted earlier, I like the project. The Google translation was funny is all.

Funding successful ! Thank you so much \o/
The available quantity with the 20% discount was increased from 35 to 50, but the 15 last will be shipped a bit later (one week more).

wyo_vr4: No problem, just wanted to clear things up as interpretation might have discouraged some interested people.

Thanks again for the help, there was a noticeable jump in the pre-orders :p

Indiegogo just started transfering the participations to my Paypal account, I should get the money on my real bank account by tuesday.
By then, I'll be able to order the parts and pre-production boards to see if everything is ready for the batch of 50.

Does indigogo charge you when you make a pledge or when it completes like Kickstarter? I don't have the cash right now but will in about 5 days and would like to get one of these. Will there be enough made to cover all the people that pledge?

So if I pledge now I will not get a converter?

No, sorry. Indiegogo should still allow you to pledge, but shouldn't let you chose the preorder perk. You'll have to wait for the next batch I'm afraid :(

So I thought it was a cool idea and funded... But then I was thinking how is this really possible? If it was possible to build this so cheap how come no one has even gotten close to this price point yet? The cheapest converters I've seen are in the $250 price range. What am I missing?

If you think about it, there aren't that many parts to it.

The difference is that the other guys were profiteering.

Maybe the fact that everyone has been ripped off before for a basic circuit board due to the known value of Neo Geo products, This guys whole deal was to make it affordable, Now it is your asking how?? maybe he should make it dearer then you would be sure its o.k?

For the price of existing converters, the main answer imo is profit and exclusivity, which can be easily justified by the relation with the price of AES games. The mold for plastic injection is very expensive too, that's certainly why the new blue SMVSC has exactly the same case than the previous ones, just with an added cutout for the update ports.
After that, I guess the connectors are the most expensive, then the boards, and finally the chip that does all the work.
