MVS 6-slot questions [long]

Hi all,

Ok, so I work at an arcade, and am getting ready to buy a 6-slot MVS that we have, but have a few questions about it before I take it home (wanna get it all fixed before I get it). There are a couple oddities I'd like to know if anyone can tell me about though.

1-No sound from right speaker. I'd assume it was a normal bad wiring/bad speaker thing, but we had a different MVS (also 6-slot) that got sold last year, and it ALSO had that problem. Is this a common thing to happen? (haven't had time to poke around and see what's wrong yet)

2-The character-select screens on Samurai Shodown 4 drops down about three inches from being properly centered, but then returns to normal/centered for the game-play screen. Is that normal for that game? Like I said, I've only had this game in my arcade for a week, so I don't know what's "normal" for it. Nam1975 doesn't do that though....

3-What's the proper voltage for this game to be at the power-supply? I thought it would be a normal 5.0ish, like most of the other games in the arcade, but after turning it down to 5 it behaved worse. It didn't fix the horizontal-drop in SS4, and it didn't change the no-sound from the right speaker (well, it was worth a try). The "worse" part is that almost all of the sound from SS4 was gone, and the game (the whole cabinet that is) wouldn't even boot up once--Z80 error. So it's up at 5.3 now. Is that high? I don't wanna burn anything up--for sure--but I want it to work properly, of course. And also--the game's doing a full reset sometimes--with the whole boot-up screen-test thing. I don't know if that got any better after I turned it up to 5.3 'cuz it was time to go home.

Sorry for the long message, and thanks in advance for any help!!

1- Test the right speaker by it self. I mean, remove it form the cab and test it. If it works, then looks to the wiring on the PCB it self. could be an issue of number 3

2- Run the test mode, choose the first option and press start until you get to the grid display. You should have all edges of the grid outside of viewing. use the monitor adj and fix it.

3- All MVS multi-slot booads need a 300watt powersupply or better. Make sure that it what it is. The board are very power hungry.
if the board is ever under powered it will cause dammage to the board that can not be fixed.

Maybe you dont have stereo on your cab as mine behaved like that and i needed to get my cab converted for sound to work properly but on my super gun i use a 1 slot as i cant get stereo and i think mono sounds pretty ok
its just a shame snk never made all slots with mono too.

Well, I brought it home on Monday. Good thing too, 'cuz a new cart came in for it today, and if I hadn't bought it before that cart came, I wouldn't have been able to afford it as the price would have been way higher after the conversion....

Anyway, as for the problem with the right speaker--upon closer inspection.... one of the wires popped off the speaker.... DUH!

The vertical screen-drift problem is still present though... but it isn't consistent with what game it appears in. I don't know how to explain that any better. It will also shake up and down one some screens, but the play-screens are always ok, so everything's perfectly playable, but if there's anything I can adjust/repair to avoid any long-term damage, it would be good. Anyone know what I should be looking for? (I don't know how to tell what wattage the power-supply is.... if it's printed on the power-supply somewhere maybe? And does anyone know what the power should be at the board? 5 volts even??)

Thanks again!

5 volts will do just fine with a 6 slot MVS board, allthough a little higher doesn't do any harm like 5.1 or 5.3 Just make sure you dont go under 5 volts otherwise some games may not play correctly. On the otherhand dont adjust the power supply too high otherwise it will shorten the lifespan of your board. Meaning not to go above 5.5 volts. Just keep it between 5 and 5.5 and you'll do just fine.
The speaker thingy you already found. Good job.
As for the SS4 switching out of screen during startup, try to put the SS4 in a different slot, if the problem remains, open up the SS4 MVS cart and let us know what you see. Most of the problems are due to the fact that alot of MVS carts are bootlegs.
If you dont see any eproms inside then you're cart will most likely be authentic and the problem will be somewhere else.

cabs are finiky things at the best of times, when you get the vert instability try adjusting the vert hold on the monitor, we sometimes muddy the water to make it seem deep.

Alrighty, 6-slot seems to be good now. I think the screen-drift/shake was when the power was drifting. I had to replace the power supply because it wasn't maintaining a consistent 5 volts. It was drifting up and down about .3 volts. Haven't had it on that long since trading power supplies, but I'm betting that's the problem.
