I can't be doing with video reviews of anything, a quarter of the content in twice the time, it's a shit way to deliver information.

The last Mission Impossible movie, it was a Part 2 - oh wow, man, this was bad. I never watched Part 1 but regardless this was bad. The amount of overt exposition explaining was just horrible. The characters at this point don't even feel like characters, they feel like a checklist. When Tom hugged Ving Rhames and gave them a 'good to see you again' moment I knew he was gonna die.

It was a bloated mess that made it hard for me to engage with what was happening on-screen. Of course nothing will ever, ever top the train scene from the first movie, but even here with scuba diving and plane acrobatics I just couldn't care.

An unexpected highlight was having the dude from the first movie - the guy who had the shits when Ethan broke into the room to get the NOC list, member? - return. That was really cool, right from the moment we see him which felt like a character introduction from Metal Gear Solid, just waiting for the dude's name to pop on screen. They also had Kittridge, the IMF director from the first one (the guy who had dinner with Ethan in the seafood restaurant and then the water blew out) but didn't have a lot of screen time, I guess he was featured more prominently in Part I. There was also a dude who was the son of Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) who really chewed the scenery, but since this movie was already waaaaayyy over limit with how many characters there were the guy did literally nothing.

Overall it was so dissapointingly bad. Thank god I didn't see this in theaters. What a bummer.

edit: has the IMF always been like a Suicide Squad thing? It was mentioned a few times in the movie how they were told they could serve in prison or join the IMF. That is stupid as shit.

The Seventh Victim- A old Val Lewton produced mystery thriller from 1943 starring Jean Brooks. A naive young woman goes to New York in search of her missing older sister (Brooks). Turns out she really didn't know her sister at all. The search leads her on a bizarre journey through the city and ultimately to a cult of devil worshipers.

Very stripped down and efficiently made but still very effective and often striking looking. It crams a lot into its 69 minute runtime. It does suffer from some awkward logic and feels a bit disjointed. Overall though it’s a solid little movie and Brooks’ Jaqueline is quite memorable despite her limited screen time.

As much as I enjoy talking about movies a YT channel doesn’t interest me at all. That’s a lot of work for no reward. Especially these days with all the copyright bullshit and YT hoops to jump through.

Somebody told me recently I should post on Letterboxd. I looked over there for like 15 minutes and while it's probably nice to keep track of shit you've watched, the review system is god awful and full of the worst kind of movie snob phonies. I'll stick to Neo hyphen Geo, thanks.

I love how this movie starts so quickly. “Your sister hasn’t paid your tuition. GTFO.” And then we’re in NYC and the plot keeps moving.

Blown to Peaces (2029)

A reflective film on the triumph of Trump's Iranian campaign and the following bloodless revolution that brought democracy, prosperity and peace to the middle east. The CGI ghost of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is fittingly evil and Salma Hayek is excellent as all 72 of his virgins sharing one giant rack. Henry Cavill is clearly having a great time as Trump, especially in the Biden torture scenes. Worth a watch if you want a better understanding of how Trump changed our world for the better.

Written and directed by Robert de Niro.

Mortal Engines - 2018

If you want something that truly puts effort into the special effects before the industry went to cheaply farmed out CGI, this is it. It got hammered by critics for plot, but it was tolerable to me for a YA narrative. The main two actors are great, but the rest of the cast it stiff as a board. Even the ones with style have no personality. Bland as bland can be, which means you don't care about them at all. Heroic death? dont care about them. As a movie, this doesnt really touch on the history of the setting which is what I was really trying to understand. This would have been better as a netflix show.

The reality is this movie is special effects + a YA storyline in a time where people were hot on adult fantasy. I can see it being an interesting setting, but I know nothing from the books.

It seemed like it was trying to capture that YA post apocalyptic boom we saw around that time: Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, etc.

Neat idea, probably better as an anime, series, or maybe even a video game.

Im unclear why i even watches this but i know it was only in the last few years.

I'm fairly certain I skipped it due to the YA fatigue you mentioned. I recall having no interest. The retrospectives say the same thing because I was curious why it didn't do well. The theme and special effects had me intrigued as I was doom scrolling, so I gave it a shot. I still enjoyed it.

The Hunger Games started a craze for YA adaptations on the silver screen because it was a new audience Hollywood studios could cash in on but truly, Twilight was the catalyst for the whole thing. Once they saw how successful that was, and since The Hunger Games was highly regarded as a 'tweener' into the subgenre, that was tne next 'big one' they went for. Then shit went crazy but not it seems to be dead. Now those girls that read those books are now thirsting after minotaurs or whatever.

My wife read a lot of those books back in the 2010s, and she liked Divergent the most out of them, partly because she liked the fact that it took place in Chicago and partly because she was a Four stan.

It didn't restore it but I've always liked his visuals.
What didn't it get right, in your opinion. Not looking to start a beef over Eggers' film. Just curious why you think the story doesn't do enough.

Too tame and too close to the original if I had to break it down in one line.
Not a bad movie (with great visuals) but I expected more from Eggers.

Those Twilight movies really ruined the whole vampire genre forever.

It ruined it for a couple of years maybe. The little girls and wine aunts got their Tiger Beat vampire, everyone else had a good laugh and by the time the last couple of them came out, everyone had moved on. Vampires are evergreen and there are so many different ways to use them in storytelling (as romantic, as monster fodder, as hero, as villain, etc.) that it's easy to pivot when one style gets played out.
