I kinda disagree with your assessment of Hob. Sure, on a superficial level it seems ridiculous, but when you give wider consideration to the "world" in which RoboCop is set, then having a young kid be a sadistic killer is not so far fetched - and I think that's the point the filmmakers were trying to make - society in this world has become so fucked up that even a child, brought up in a world of drugs and violence, could run a crime empire, because he probably has never known anything different.

I know a lot of contemporary reviewers also found the Hob character to be quite repulsive, and a stupid idea... I think it was genius.
Any time a young kid swears, it's hilarious. So I like the character on that basis alone. I'm not completely sold on the idea of a kid that age being capable of long term planning, delayed gratification, impulse control, or any of the other qualities needed to run any kind of business. But to quote Harrison Ford to Mark Hamill on the set of Star Wars in regards to young Mark's concerns about shot-to-shot continuity, "It ain't that kind of picture, kid. If people are looking at your hair, we're all in big trouble."

Monsters- A sort of sci-fi/horror lite road trip movie from the director of The Creator, Rogue One and Godzilla. A photo journalist is tasked by his employer to get the employer’s daughter across the border from Mexico back to the US. Except all of northern Mexico and part of Texas are an off limits quarantine zone where extraterrestrial monsters have taken up residence and started to reproduce after falling to Earth on a satellite a few years earlier. Of course things go wrong and they have to sneak their way through the extremely dangerous zone.

The movie is pretty well done especially for what I assume was a rather modest budget. It has a uniquely detached feel and is kind of slow paced but is still quite engaging. I can see why the director was picked for Godzilla based on this movie. I think this is the first thing I remember seeing Scoot McNairy in and him and the female lead both turn in solid performances.

It’s a pretty original movie that I think is rather overlooked and I’d give it a solid recommendation.

It looks like the director is working on the next Jurassic Park project starring Scarlet Johansson which can‘t be any worse than the last couple, hopefully…

Robocop 2 has the best scene in anything to do with Robocop ever.

All of the failed Robocop predecessors.

Also, the scene where they are filling his head with 6 trillion directives. Robocop is an analogy for society in that scene, one man tasked with being everything to everybody and lacking the autonomy to do any of it. He becomes paralyzed by all the rules in a situation that clearly needs decisive action absent oversight to garner any worthwhile results.

One can say 'well not all cops can be trusted'. True enough. But Murphy CAN be trusted because that's how he's written. He is a superhero archetype, and we shouldn't be expecting them to be as crippled by self doubt, or carry the burden of doubt others have, as we are.

There is a statement in there about breaking the law to protect innocents and make the world a safer place. Frank Miller's philosophical beliefs are on display here. Makes me wonder if his favorite part of 300 is when Leonidas defies the rules of the Carnea to go on his little field trip, and not the bombastic heroics of dying for what one believes in.

Very much in the vein of the Arthurian hero Perceval, and I'm cool with that.

A Quiet Place Day 1

I havent seen the 2nd one, but enjoyed the first one. This one was a more action-y one than the first. It doesn't answer much about the monsters other than basically confirming they are aliens and that they cant swim because of water, I guess.

I have a feeling Joseph Quinn has been getting work solely based on his Master of Puppets scnene in Stranger Things. He's not that great of an actor. Lupita Nyong'o on the other hand, I could watch 2 hours of her paying her taxes.

I'd forgotten who this guy was so I looked him up. How did he possibly not play zuckerburg in the Facebook film?

Yeah they make a big deal about them not being able to swim or do basic stuff like opening doors yet in the second one they somehow pilot a boat to an island and sneak on shore lol.

The second one is such a piece of shit.

Rewatched 300 last year. Didn't age well. At least the second one has Eva Green's tits.
It's still awesome.

Not as awesome as Eva Green's breasts but those are absolutely perfect and she wasn't shy about showing them if the role 'called' for it. But she didn't need to show them in every role, which is what I love more about her. She is so hot.

But 300 is still pretty great. Snyder probably wants to release a 12 hour cut.

I could've sworn there were excellent boobs in the first 300. I don't think I saw the second one, but I remember some pencil erasers.

You're thinking of Lena Heady, who played Leonidas' wife Gorgo.

Also the oracle dancing and 'predicting the future'.

And the deranged orgy that Ephialtes went to when Xerxes was trying to buy his loyalty after being spurned by the Spartans.

There were plenty of tits but even all combined, they don't add up to Eva Green's bountiful pulchritude.

Just like Miller as a person & his afterthought excuse for art.
Yeah, he had some kind of break triggered by 9/11. And then his artistic ability diminished drastically due to age. But his 1980s stuff holds up just fine.

Hasn't Miller also been really sick for a long time? Like 'can't believe he's still alive' sick? I thought smoking or drinking or something really messed him up.

decades of coke was the main culprit, I think. But yeah, heavy alcohol and the rest aged him at super speed.

All the coke would definitely explain Holy Terror. More like 'holy shit' because HOLY SHIT was it bad.

I feel like when he's inspired, he can still turn out some decent work. I just don't think he's really trying to say anything anymore. Or if he is, it's nothing really making me want to read it. I bought Ronin II but so far, I haven't been inclined to read it. Feels like it was a gimmick to generate hype for his 'comic company', which it didn't.

I didn't even know Ronin II existed. I love the original.

Have you read the first one recently? I still have my old beat up trade and it's been well over 30 years since I gave it a read. I wonder how well it would hold up.

I think it was 2013 or 2014 when I read it. I'm not super into comics, but I love stuff like The Filth and The Invisibles, as well as the classic '80s stuff like Dark Knight Returns, The Watchmen, etc. (I started as an indie comics fan - stuff like Optic Nerve, which my college GF introduced me to.) So I'm a basic bitch, if that helps you assess lol.

Shadow Of The Vampire- What if Count Orlok in the 1922 Nosferatu wasn’t an actor but an actual vampire and the director made a deal with him to be in the movie but didn’t tell the cast or crew? A fantastic premise with a fantastic movie to back it up. Excellent casting with John Malkovich as F.W. Murnau and Willem Defoe as Max Schreck/Count Orlock. Defoe absolutely nails it as the Count with some exceptional physical acting and Malkovich is great as the manic director willing to go to any length to achieve his vision. The two compliment each other perfectly. The movie also has a great look to it that really manages to capture the feel of filmmaking at the time as well as be faithful to the original.

I’m surprised this movie doesn’t get mentioned very much whenever classical vampire movies are discussed, maybe it’s a little too meta for purists. Highly recommended.

I ain't assessing you, brother. Just curious how old you were the last time you read it. There are times when I loved stuff as a teenager and discovered it was ass and there were times I loved stuff as a teenager and my love for it only grows every time I revisit because I have clearer eyes to see it with. And then there are times I hated something as a teenager and appreciate it as an adult. Just wondering where you were with that regarding Ronin.

RE: Shadow of the Vampire

I have been singing that movie's praises ever since it came out. It's criminal that it's not more appreciated. A true gem.

Oh I know. I just wanted to give you the caveat that I’m not well versed.
