MOTW 2: will it ever see the light of day?

I've been playing a lot of MOTW this week (mostly MVS, lag kills the 360 version) and I remembered how great a game it is. I also remembered that somewhere in an office building somewhere in Japan a sequel is sitting two thirds of the way done.

I know MOTW 2 was developed for the MVS so to actually get it released at this stage of the game they'd have to reprogram it from the ground up on new hardware, but with KOF XII coming to home systems next week with all new high rez 2D sprites and backgrounds the flame of hope is still flickering.

The ground work is already in place and MOTW has already achieved legendary status. I'd imagine a completely redrawn HD MOTW 2 would be able to grab a decent chunk of change.

Meh, SNKP will probably never actually finish let alone release MOTW 2. On the slim chance that they did it'd probably be some abysmal 3D fuckjob a la Maximum Impact.

I'd still love to have a chance to play what they have done.

I think companies in general should release a collection of abandoned protos for the fans. If they have no plans to finish the games they should have someone enjoy them at least.

I think there will eventually be a sequel to motw. It would be on new hardware. They could technically call it MOTW3 as there was already an MOTW2.
In recent years SNK Playmore has only been making new games for their biggest Neo series, eg KOF, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown. But after those series, Fatal Fury is the next most popular series, so they might think it's worth doing. Any new games these days are on optical media or as downloads, so there is not much production cost compared to Neo carts, the main cost is in developing the games.
Maybe they could develop MOTW3 on the Neo at the same time as the next gen versions. They could have MOTW3 being similar to the Neo MOTW, but with more characters and on a gigabit cart to fit it all in. The development could be done for MVS and next-gen systems at the same time, but making the next-gen versions with basically the same graphics but higher resolution.

If the protos are SNK games they should release them. But one of the SNK guys were saying that they didn't own the rights to some games by other companies, so they couldn't release them on SNK Classics Vol.1. Some of the games would be unfinished, but only need a little work to complete.

It'd still be MOTW 2 as they've never released it on any platform.

I'd like to see the storyline continued.
But I wouldn't invest much hope in a sequel.
even if it was made by SNKP.
they're like modern SEGA.
the end product looks nice, but there's no soul to anything they do.

I'd be happy with either a MOTW2 or a Last Blade 3 release. Both were said to be in development but never made it to release.

Everyone in this community should be hoping KOF XII does well for SNK's sake. They need a solid break out hit and KOF is there best chance right now. Only then will we start seeing them take bigger chances with some of their other fighting franchises...

SNK should release Samurai Shodown V Perfect, they did a location test with it, so it must have been fairly complete. Also it should be on the Master List.

MOTW 2 = Money in SNKP's pocket. Wonder what's taking them so long?

SNK has stated as early as last year that the Fatal Fury series will see an ending.

SNKP said:
The story has not been concluded in Mark of the Wolves which we released in 1999. We think we should conclude the story of Fatal Fury someday. There's not currently in any concrete demand schedule, but with some new technology we're working on, that is something that is in our mind.

So, its coming - just a matter of "when?"

It would be nice if SNK Playmore would bring the MVS back since the hardware is still good or make a new arcade hardware with small square carts like the Atomiswave had. :D

Isn't 2011 the 20th anniversary of Fatal Fury? It would be a great time to release a new game (hopefully MOTW 2) to the series. KoF XII was released on the 15th anniversary of KoF.

It's been 5 years since the last official Neo Geo release (SSVS), so MOTW 2 won't most likely be a Neo Geo game. SNKP could still use many things from the prototype (including art, character and stage designs etc.) in a "KoF XII-like" game.

Its not as well known as KOF or Metal Slug or Samsho, thats why they've concentrated on those 3 (and subsequently raped them to death and back)

I'd like a motw as much as I'd like a last blade 3.

i.e not very much really.

Both games would be a shadow of their former selves, just like XII is.

However they will have flashy graphics and I guess thats what makes people take notice nowadays. Apparently XII is pretty unfinished though, and to be honest the systems been stripped back so much I'd just rather play KOF98 anyway.

:annoyed:

They do have two thirds of the gameplay done for MOTW (albeit its programmed for MVS but it was done by the original MOTW team). They'd have to port it all over to the PS3 & Xbox 360 but at least they have the original framework to work from.

With two thirds of the original code already in existence I think that even SNKP would have a hard time fucking it all up.

SS5 is probably 2/3rds of previous SS code , MS4/5 are probably 2/3rds of previous metal slug code, they still suck.

Another thing is that does anyone really know theres a '2/3rds completed' version on someones desk in a building in Japan. Theres no real confirmation of this, its the same as mentioning about Super Mario 3D FX for snes or Mario 64-2 on miyamotos desk, its mainly all speculation.

They'd probably start from scratch even if that version did exist anyway.

That quote sounds promising....but does that necessarily mean a MOTW 2 is coming? Couldnt they be referring to another 3D fatal fury game or something like a new Wild Ambition game? Or are those games part of a different story line (I honestly dont know...I never played them).

It could all be an urban legend. Who knows. The rumors all say that work on the sequel began shortly after the release of MOTW and that it was pretty far along when SNK went under in 01.

Of all the rumors regarding unreleased Neo games I guess I really want this one to be true. :(

I'd rather MOTW stand alone as a great title and them work on a new fighter completely. That would rock.

I'll be honest, I think if another MOTW came out, it would probably be garbage. I'd like to leave MOTW un-bastardized.

There's always the chance that SNKP could screw it all up with a botched sequel and tarnish the legacy of MOTW ( and that's somewhere around a 50% chance) so on that token I can see people wanting to leave MOTW alone.

It would be great to see SNKP come up with a brand new IP and a brand new series but, lets face it, that's not going to happen. They know there's guaranteed money in trotting out the old familiar faces.

I'm such a contradictory fuck.

I can never decide if I totally loathe SNKP, if I'm ambivalent to them of if they're just ok and doing the best they can as a living fossil in this modern go go world.

Im sure the sales #'s on KOF XII will dictate alot of what SNK will do in regards to rehashing alot of their properties into new titles

If KOF ends up being a profitable game for them, then I would imagine they would start producing more fighters, and hopefully a sequel to MOTW, because then they would know there was an audience that would jump at the chance to purchase and play a sequel

If KOF bombs, I wouldn't hold my breath

If you imagine everyone on these forums buying 5 copies a piece, they still wouldnt sell much at all. So as much as we would all eat up a sequel, neo-geo.com members cant carry a game to profitability

but I sure as hell hope that sequel happens

There have got to be tons of fans in Japan who would be interested in a MOTW sequel who don't really post anywhere.

Let's all hope KOF XII does well on the consoles. If the rumors it's coming out in Korea first are true, I'll try and be there on day one.

My guess has always been:

Both Terry and Andy are actually Geese's sons. :)

Agreed. There is an audience for a sequel, but is it a big enough audience to support the cost of development, manufacturing, and marketing ?

Our best hope is that KOF ends up being a success and makes SNK some actual money.
As soon as they see there is a real audience for new 2d fighters, they might start churning out more

But either way, between BlazBlue and KOF XII coming out within a month of eachother, 2d fighting is making a real resurgence, and it might carry through to get us another MOTW or Last Blade
