For that price, which honestly is a bit much considering most don't need the extras, it's totally worth it over the real thing. Especially considering you're adding in CPS1,2, Irem M72/92 plus tons of other shit.

Been toying a bit with fightcade to bide my time - is the screen tearing an indicator that my machine (just using my laptop with awful integrated intel graphics chip) is too weak or is this due to emulation?

Update your directX to whatever the latest version is, and adjust the blitter accordingly. Also, make sure you've set the screen to the proper aspect ratio. Not saying that'll stop the screen tear, but best to maximize the chances of having it run properly.

Your PC, whatever it is, is fine for Fightcade. A potato can run it smoothly. If Prof's suggestion didn't help, you may need to turn on Vsync globally from the Intel Graphics Center. If you haven't checked already, this link may help. https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005552/graphics.html

With all the current options available - what is the most hassle free setup for NeoGeo gaming?
I look at my xbox one x, collecting dust
ACA Neogeo, get yourself a decent stick and you could play a good selection of Neo games.

I still have a CMVS that I built myself, which is the reason I don't want to put it on the shelf with the kids at home (yes, I'm that good with building stuff, I was even amazed that I got everything working with my crappy soldering skills)
I'm sure there must be a way to put it in a box to prevent your kids from fiddling around with it. May not be as hassle-free as you wanted at first but in the end, it would be kinda sad to let an opportunity to play real carts on the real thing slide, don't you think.

interesting, didn't know about the ACA Neogeo

As for the CMVS - yeah, I'd rather use it, thing is when I moved I sold the cards back to the community via these forums looking to get a NeoSD. Getting into the "real" MVS carts again is something I could look at, but it feels weird.
Therefore I thought either of going the AES route (if "the feel of collecting" is something I want to revisit) and a NeoSD with it - or if I go ONLY the route of something like a NeoSD the MISTer seemed to be an attractive option.

Truth be told - I don't know enough of the differences in feel of "real hardware experience" between the MISTer and a NeoSD. (I did checkout some videos that suggested the MISTer is pretty much perfect)

Just as an example of what's available:

It's a 161-in-1 MVS cart for €70 + shipping. Lots of bang for the buck I would say. Together with a simple box for your CMVS and a bit of Bastelarbeit, you'd get a nice and inexpensive Neo setup.

Going the homecart route can be fun but also quite frustrating, depending on your disposable income. A NeoSD for a homecart system isn't cheap but probably worth it if you consider the usual going prices of even average Neo games. The collecting aspect most definitely is there but you could as well scratch that itch with MVS carts in shockboxes (or similar cases) and a nicely printed insert. If you don't have a decent printer yourself, you could send a picture file to a printing service and get the result delivered to your door.

The Mister community strives to perfect every supported system, a goal which IMO has been more or less reached with many 8 bit and 16 bit machines, including the Neo. There are still updates coming in but overall, the experience you get from playing Neo games on a Mister won't be any different to playing them on the real thing with real carts or a NeoSD.

There is an Aliexpress Mister clone that has popped up recently that's pretty inexpensive, but it's still a little too early to see if it's a true replacement. Give someone else a few weeks to test it first.

I got a JPN AES with a NeoSD Pro a few days ago didn't get a chance to use it yet. and also a Mister. Basically got the Mister to play several consoles. I also got the 8bit wireless Neo Geo gamepads for the Mister.

I just use a Mister. It's fairly easy to setup, It's small so pretty much fits anywhere, you could practically play any console or computer pre 98, you have a ton of USB controller and stick options.

There are pretty much new updates every week if you chose to update. The Saturn core is almost near perfect and is still getting updated.

I still have a Aes and NeoSd but hardly play it. I turn it on every once and awhile just to make sure it works.
