The Switch is orders of magnitude easier for third parties to port games to. The Wii U CPU is literally 3 Wii CPUs on one die, and the Wii CPU is literally 1990s tech (it's a PPC G3, like you'd find in a first gen iMac). And the GPU is really dated too, and the RAM is slow and half of it is closed off for dedicated OS purposes. It's more or less 25 Gamecubes duct taped together and third parties don't wanna fuck with that in the 2010s. Switch is a much more modern device just in terms of features and design, let alone the difference in raw power.

And the fact that Switch is actually fully portable can't be overstated. There's no point in having a "portable" you can't take more than 20 feet from your home console. The Switch isn't just the successor to the Wii/Wii U, it's also the successor to the 3DS.

All correct but I just don't care. I'm not the target market though.

The marketing for the Wii U was bad as well IMO.
I thought it was some kind of weird controller add on for the Wii.
Wasn't till after it was basically DED dead that I realized it was its own thing.

The versatility of the Switch controllers makes all the difference.

They can be attached to the device as a handheld, they can be connected together to make one traditional gamepad, they can be played as a motion controller in each hand, they can be played as two separate Wii remotes, or they can be played as two separate little NES style gamepads. Multiplayer on the Wii U is always awkward as you have to have the Gamepad and then multiple sets of Wii Remotes and Nunchucks and multiple sets of Pro Controllers depending on what game you're trying to play with other people.

Switch gives you the handheld, the traditional home console, the motion control setup, and two different same room multiplayer configurations in one purchase.

You don't have to sell me on the Wii U, I bought one at launch and I got plenty of use out of it. But it should be really damn easy to see why Switch is going to end up outselling even the PS2 and DS. It's the cheapest console on the market, it's a portable too, and it's the easiest way to play video games in the same room with other people in 2024.

Dang OP, that is a cool thought. Personally I'd like that better cause nothing made me madder than having to replace my console. But I stopped at the PS4. The PS5 didn't entice me. And a friend sold me his Switch for $80 so I've been using that.

I like the versatility of the switch controllers but I don't like that I'm three sets in after relatively light use, and even the third set is now drifting all over the place. I don't know if they improved the sticks on the switch lite, but assuming they didn't, I avoided getting one as a second unit for my kids.

Maybe you suck? My launch Switch still has its stock Joycons.

Suck at not breaking joycons? Haven't broken a controller on any other system since I bit an SN Propad in half trying to beat balrog.

The Xbox One D-pad broke on both my pads that I actually tried to use it to play games with. Seems like no one else ever talked about it, so maybe I just suck.

I usually buy a pro controller for all my systems so my original controllers all work!

Once the sticks start to get loose, I just replace them. When my controllers start drifting or the buttons stop working, I get unexplainably angry and inconsolable. I'd rather avoid the stress.

Fire up the ps5 after the kids have finally gone to bed, screen lights up, controller batteries dead, neither of them bothered to put it on the charger.

Apoplectic.

I don't have any kids. Sometimes, I feel like I missed out on one of life's great joys.

Other times, I'm glad I missed out on one of life's great joys.

I just replaced the analog sticks in my pro controller. Easy-ish to do and it's like brand new again. Highly recommended.

Maybe it was just me but I don't remember this being an issue in the 90s. N64 analog sticks would break if you were rough on them. But I have 30 year old n64 controllers where the sticks are just fine. I've never heard of the ps1 dual shock or saturn analog controller having any problems at all.

N64 sticks crumbled worse than anything
Except they didn't? You have to use them like an adult, sure. And when you do, they're fine.

My pro controller got drift and I barely even use the analog sticks at all.

Most modern pads use the same shitty thumbstick assemblies from the same company and have the same shitty problems. They might vary a little in tension and size, but they're the same basic design.
