just to let you know, the license is reverting back to Harmony Gold and Animeigo will no longer be selling Macross DVDs after December 31 of this year.

If you want them, you better buy them while you can.

Of course, my guess is that someone else will likely license the show again, Harmony Gold willing (my guess is ADV). One thing they wouldn't allow Animeigo to do was a dub, which limited it's sales IMO, as some stores, like Best Buy, won't stock titles subtitled only for some reason. They did the no dub thing because fucking Robotech is their baby and the thing they want to sell, not Macross (that's just my opinion, of course).

You can get the sets while you can. I recommend the 3 discs boxes as you save $5, but whatever.

You can find them cheaper at DVD Soon. Just remember the prices listed there are Canadian, so they are cheaper than they look. Plus you get free shipping.

best move evar imo.

it's funny, those animego macross dvds look better than the japanese r2 boxset, which wasn't remastered at all at the length animego went through. it's like comparing akira laserdisc to the pioneer dvd.

I agree in part in that the original would like be better, but by doing this Harmony Gold basically cut Animeigo's legs off at the knee. Doing that limited where the sets would be stocked, limiting their potential sales to walk in customers. It stunk of HG wanting to try and make Robotech appear to be more popular, because that's their baby (and the ONLY thing they have). HG are the same fuckers who block a shitload of the other Macross series from being released in the US. Harmony Gold is pronounced Satan.

Granted, being as old as it is I doubt many drive by Anime fans would probably skip it, but still.

I was one of the first hundred ppl to be on the "Pre-Order" list at Animeigo for the R1 DVD boxed set. Then I got it, watched it, and realized I know longer was as into SDF Macross as I had once been. What Animeigo did was beautiful no doubt, but I really only care for MACROSS: DYRL "The Movie"... thus I kept the movie and sold off my entire box set sometime ago for $Cash money for more MVS Carts.

UFO Robot Grendizer & SDF Macross {as Robotech of course} were the two major titles along with the atrocious Captain Harlock & The Queen of a Thousand Years {Fuckin' Harmony Gold! } that got me into my first steps with Japanimation, but today only Matsumoto's works really still call to me. Though it was really stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, AREA 88, Riding Bean, and Dangaio that kick started the anime craze that eventually waned. I want someone to sub and release R1 the OVA series of VOTOMS myself.

You mean Voyager?

And don't you mean a sub? All of Starblazers is dubbed. No one has ever released a Space Battleship Yamato sub, and probably never will.

The restoration job on those Macross discs is fucking awesome. I pre-ordered those SOB's soon as they became available. Cant believe its been 20 years since I've first seen Macross when it was merged with Robotech.... and its the only toon from my childhood (besides Looney Tunes) that I still love.

I need some Macross II advice.....

I currently only have the VHS of episodes 3 & 4............on ebay I am seeing a movie "lovers again"

Does this work the same way as DYRL, is the movie a remix of the series, an edit like Plus or a stand alone feature??

Fact.
No...

Opinion.

I hated the 2nd and 3rd arcs of Robotech. The shows probably would have been decent on their own dubbed without tying it to the first arc, but the falsifying of things to make them fit neatly into the Robotech Universe really fucked it over IMO. The Macross portion of Robotech was fine, it's the least molested of the 3 series they tenderized into Robotech. The Macross portion made sense, there were scenes in the other arcs where all I could think was "WTF is going on here?" because of how "jumpy" it was. Of course, I say the other series were probably better pre-Harmony Gold (Satan) molestation, though I still haven't actually bought the series from ADV...

robotech is okay, when i was a little kid in the 80's and didn't know what anime was. but you're smoking if you think it's better than macross, since all robotech was is hacked up dubbed macross. now the two macross spinoff shows (forget the names) are pretty crap compared to super dimensional fortress (they were also the later seasons of robotech).

Loopz, Slerch, Dash.

Sorry, macross is Sailor Moon with Valkyries. Macek decided to make it better, and make it one long story. It fits perfectly. The novels by Jack Mckinney really help with the jumpy parts. I'll admit, the entire Robotech Gens 1, 2 and 3 are hacked up and mushed together edits of Macross/Southern Cross/Genesis Climber, but the singular story told by the books/comics/show is utterly fantastic.

The entire loop from the first SpaceFold, the disappearing of the Fold Engines, all the way to Max/Miriya's 2nd Daughter Aurora and the other special children, and the whole Robotech Masters/Haydon story is fucking awesome.

I'd much rather watch/read that than watch 900 episodes about how Minme (ANNOYING!) is able to TIME AND AGAIN stop about 400,000 different races from obliterating Earth. Macek took the pieces that were SDF:M/SC/GC:M and molded them into an awesome 3 generation (techically 3.5) story arc.

So once again.

Lovers again is the movie version of the entire Macross II series. kind of like DYRL for the original macross and Macross Plus the movie for duh Macross Plus.

Don't get me wrong I love Robotech. Comparing it to Macross though? It is like comparing jerking off to getting a blow job.

Isn't Japan the creator's of it and not
Harmony Gold. Harmony Gold would not
have it if Japan didn't let them hacked up and
mushed them together because Robotech
would of not been here if not for Japan.
Macross was a lot better though but Robotech
is still good because i have the first Robotech
Collection DVD & 1 Robotech DVD as well too.

Funny thing is though, originally Harmony Gold planned to release SDF Macross, as SDF Macross, and there are still VHS copies of the original 8 episodes that while dubbed in English, the story is unaltered save the names of some of the characters like Rick Hunter is called Rick Yamada... a stretch from Hikaru Ichijoe, but closer to the original. Lisa stayed Misa, and Roy Fokker was called Roy Focker, just like in the original series and movie. The ppl who dubbed the English eps, complete with the original intro, however, were a different for Captain Bruno J. Gloval already chagned to Henry Gloval. Then due to problems with the networks with not having enough episodes for a TV series at the time, they sought out Carl "Satan" Macek who then came onboard and everything turned into ROBOTECH pasting Southern Cross and MOSPEADA.

The tapes {I used to have Volume 1 eps 1-4} are floating around EBAY and can be found at Anime Meetings from time to time. They are yellow covered paper inserts in clam shell VHS cases, sporting the original Japanese artwork. As far as I know only TWO volumes were ever produced. Why I sold my volume 1 I'll never know. It's a rairty for those who care. Personally I'd have rather them released it like that than what they did to it.

Lay off the paint chips.

I had this witty and creative edit of your post all written up Punj but I felt it was a tad too malicious so I opted on quoting Loopz instead.

As you can tell by my forum name, I'm definitely pro-Macross.

Now...don't get me wrong. I can appreciate Robotech somewhat. After all, it was Robotech that I saw on TV when I was a kid and what got me initially hooked on that whole crazy Japanimation/Anime thing in the first place. The other offerings on TV at the time such as Speed Racer, Tranzor-Z, and Voltron never did much for me and if left with only them I probably would have grown up disenfranchised with anime as a whole.

I appreciate Robotech insomuch that it got my foot in the door with anime but that's where my appreciation ends. You have to understand something. With the advent of the internet and the information superhighway, I've had this phrase kicking around in the back of my head ever since I read up on how Robotech came to be and subsequently when I was able to watch Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber with their real stories and character names.

In case you're curious what that phrase is that's been kicking around in my head, I'll tell you. When someone mentions Robotech, it goes something like this....

WHAT A FUCKING LIE

Ever since I got to see the three series as they were originally intended I've never been able to look at Robotech the same since. While you might be able to stomach the surgical composite that Dr. Macekstein has created, I can't help but feel disgusted and cheated by it. I can't help but imagine if things went better for Macek and Harmony Gold than they did then the landscape of anime as we know it today would be VASTLY different and not something I personally would care to be associated with (though to be fair with the number of retards and cosplay weirdos who attend cons now...I'm starting to feel alienated regardless).

When AnimEigo initially posted they locked in the license for Macross on DVD subbed only I wasted NO time in pre-ordering one. I'm happy as well that someone at ADV had the good sense to mimic this deal and license sub only releases for Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada, two boxsets I again wasted no time in picking up.

Meh different strokes for different folks I guess but just in my OPINION...

Macross > Robotech, 8 days a week :loco:

Robotech >(x100) Macross

Fact.

And again... opinion.

So what you're telling me is that in order for me to fully and properly enjoy Robotech, I have to read all that extra shit? Fuck that, I should be able to pick up any singular piece of any of it and have it make sense. That reeks of marketing bullshit (which all companies are guilty of at some point).

Have you actually watched Macross? The reason you have the impression Minmay saves the Earth "over and over" again is because of Robotech. If I remember correctly, in Macross there really aren't that many scenes of Minmei saving everyone by singing, that only happens the first time. Every other time it's used like a weapon to distract and confuse the enemy. Once she does her little thing and begins to become a star, the show no longer focuses on Minmay because Hikaru begins to go for Misa. It's not until later in the series when Minmay returns that her singing comes back to play, and even then it's used as a weapon.

But whatever. Your opinion is your opinion.

Another thing about Minmei....

When I saw Minmay in RT, I absolutely hated the character. Whiney. Ditzy. Self centered. Sure , she had some of the same qualities in Mac, but she seemed more sympathetic and not just a human annoyance machine.

I will give you an AMEN to that. I fucking hated Minmay in RT as well. When it came to Macross I couldn't believe how much more I liked the character... though she can still be annoying.
