It's great... I belive that it was modeled after the Warriors.

The most playable technos beat em up arcade game.

You think so? I was just contemplating selling off my PCB. Picked it up a few years back and it hasn't received much play. Maybe I should spend some more time with it before I make a decision.

TMNT will be my favorite. I'm still trying to beat it on one credit. It would be possible if I can get pass that rock soldier.

And it seems I'm the only one who loved Wild West C.O.W. boys of Moo Masa

I don't consider Gaiden, Bad Dudes or POW to be true Beat em ups...

Because most guys die with one hit.

How could I forget one of the more sadistic titles...gameplay wasn't as tight as some of the others, but you could pull off really nasty moves like this:

Awesome.

Awesome.

I still prefer the gameplay of Combat Tribes to that of Double Dragon or Renegades.

I picked up a Japanese B board with original art set for about $140 all in very nice condition which I thought was a pretty good deal. I've seen them on ebay more though in the last year or so. Also, $100 for a B board isn't a bad price for a game I'd say is uncommon.

It was also the last beat'em up game released for the CPS2 in 1997. There is an English/Euro version of the game but it's very rare as it only saw limited release. It's wacky theme was deffinatly targeted at the Japanese thus the readily available green boards.

I kind of got lucky then, original english board but with jap art

Alien vs predator is pretty much the king of arcade side scrollers, yes more so then final fight, D & D 2 and etc

I would have to say I played more 4player x-men than anything else, as far as beat-em-ups goes.

TMNT was cool, but I had the board and it gets old unless you have time to go through alot of the game.

AvP was and still is an excellent game.

Too bad none of my controller are working with MAME now.

Robocop by Data east was one of those "One hit" beat em ups like bad dudes that was also a great game.

I dig Combatribes and still play it from time to time.

Night Slashers is awesome and I like Mutation Nation despite the haters.

Sengoku 2 is tops as well.

Another vote for Combatribes, not my fav but badass still.

I think one of the reasons it doesn't get the respect it should is because the levels are not typical to normal beatmups ie: going back and forth until a boss fight. However the moves more than make up for it.

Technos ftw.

Honorable mentions to:

Sailor Moon
Vendetta
D&D 1&2
AVP

After receving my Night Slashers PCB and giving it a good run I must say it's one of the finest beat'em ups I've ever played. Very nice, colorful backgrounds and awesome gore when badies die. I don't give Data East much credit but they get mad props for this rarely seen gem

I too think Mutation Nation is great, it's got that classic earily 90's over the top feel to it.

I didn't notice this til last night, but Turtles in Time have to be the most difficult beatemup I played.

And Moonwalker is over looked again because of the terrible console port.

What about:

- Cadillacs and Dinosaurs ???
- The Punisher ???

Especially C&D has cost me all the money i had back in the days it was in the arcades. I think it's much better than Final Fight because of the tons of weapons. I really should buy a pcb when i think back of the fun i had.... Arcadiabay has one but it's gonna cost me......

Mutation Nation is still a very good game, it was also one of the most best looking beat'em ups when it came out in 1991, beautyfull stages and special attacks, a must have for Neo-Geo owners.

- The Punisher ???

they're both Capcom classics no beat'em up fan can miss. Two great games with tons of weapons, could not really say if I prefer one... I especially love the gunshooting sequences in Punisher and the whole atomsphere in Cadillacs

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to chime in and say that Mutation Nation sucks. Yes, I know, I'm on a neo-geo boad, but that game is just lame. I was so super excited about it. I remember way back when, in Gamepro there was this big beat em up layout talking about the up and coming beat em ups. It had Super Double Dragon, it had this game... a few more. I just remember that being the one I was very excited about.

Years later, I order it... what a pile of crap. Maybe I was just hyped to get it, but it was a total let down.

I've only played the SNES port, but yeah, that's the major bummer about Combatribes. It's also what killed Crows for the Saturn, I just can't stand beat 'em ups like this. To me, the best thing about beat 'em ups are the diverse backgrounds -- traveling from one area to the next, all the while taking in the environment (Streets of Rage 2 handled this wonderfully).

And hey, Robo Army > Mutation Nation.
MN had some cool bosses no doubt, but the basic enemies got boring real quick.

I understand as today the game suffers of its lack of moves, especially when you see how last titles have upgrade this point. Reading opinions on this title, it is more like the game is more appreciated by peoples who discovered it when it came out. I have the same feeling with Undercover Cops, that I really find awesome (just play the jap version that has a few useful moves and include a second giant special attack)

Be aware I bought this game in 98. So, we're talking a long while back I thought it was garbage. Never the less. ;)

One game from the creator of beatemups, Technos, that gets overlooked/unheardof is "Shadow Force". Well made. It's possible to beat on 1 credit (always a plus for me when I look at beatemups), had a good amount of moves, a branching path here or there. I'd say it's aged a little bit better than other than other beatemups of its era.
