Since you said lesser known I'll skip the Castlevanias, Fire Emblems, Kirbys, F-Zeros, Advance Wars, etc but definitely get those.

Aliens: Infestation and Bangai-O Spirits would be two to check out.

- Retro Game Challenge and its fan translated sequel
-Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
-Ace Attorney trilogy
-Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey
-Rhythm Tengoku Gold
-Space Invaders Extreme
-Ketsui Death Label
-The World Ends With You
-Batman Brave and the Bold
-9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors
-Warioware Touched
-Hotel Dusk and its sequel, Last Window
-Trace Memory
-Osu Tatakae Ouendan and the sequel
-Elite Beat Agents

Those are all I can think of now. Make sure and check if a game you like has an undub patch if you don't like the English voices, there's a few out there.

This is a good start, but Solotorobo The Red Hunter is a must play. Get the English version, it has the DLC, the PAL version does not.

I would also add...

Ghost Trick Phantom Detective
Lost in Blue (1st one)
Rune Factory 2 or 3.
Meteos
Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords
Super Robot Taisen OG SAGA
Infinite Space (RPG by Sega)
Tokyo Beat Down

999 and Pokemon Conquest come to mind as being way more fun than I anticipated and I poured so many hours into them.

How does emulation even work with these games?
I'm not really sure about emulation, I've tried it and it seems like the mouse replaced the touch screen.
I'm using an R4 card, it's basically everdrive for DS.

Awesome start here.
I've had a DS for a long time but really only stuck to the known games because so much diarrhea level stuff got shoveled out I just kinda gave up looking.
Getting this card has me interested again.

I played so many DS games when that thing was first out. Distinctly remember spending a lot of time trying to find underrated/overlooked games on that thing for a long time.

Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ was a fun shmup-like diversion. Giana Sisters DS was a decent platformer that I went in thinking would be bargain bin garbage but was actually fun.

Bangai-O, good call. Had the DC version and liked it a lot.

Space Invaders Extreme is a favourite of mine and I own a physical copy.

That first one looks interesting for some reason.

Zombie BBQ sounds really familiar.
I want to say I bought it on the recommendation of a GS employee and enjoyed it.
I'll have to play it again to see if it's what I'm remembering.

EDIT
It IS the game i remember but not as fun as I remember.

An old NES / Atari Lynx game called "Crystal Mines" got a DS version in Europe and Australia.

I loved that game as a kid, so I imported a copy years ago.

If you like that style of puzzle game, see if you can track it down.
