Just released 1.0.0rc0 (release candidate zero). The hack is completely done for English and Spanish. Japanese still needs the new endings translated.

RC0 just in case there is still a bug I missed. 1.0 is pretty much here.

And just released 1.0.0.

This fixes an issue in Kawaks where sprites would get corrupted. As far as I can tell, the hack now fully works in Kawaks.

Awesome work!

Now you've more or less completed this project will you be developing a hack for KoF '95 which removes the team edit function?

Haha, my friend asked the same thing :)

I'm definitely done with rom hacking for a while. It really racks the brain.

I was able to hack in a clean character select even more similar to KOF95. By far the most common request.

But without the animated background, is it too simple? 🤔

Looks good, but the SNK logo is not in the same place as in the order select screen in all the lines

oh yeah, that was just a quick rough version to see what people think. If you watch, Takuma's name is cut off too.

It's incredible how many bugs are appearing. Good to see you are catching and fixing everything. Nice job!

A lot of that is my fault. I'm used to software having large test suites that help prevent bugs. There's nothing like that for this hack. I really need to fully test the entire hack each time as you just never know. I'm getting better about doing that at least.

These guys are really good. They random selected the whole time and rocked with whomever they were given.

Yeah. It must be feel good to see people enjoying your work.

Sorry if I missed this: How does it determine which stage you play on? Is that random too?

Version 1.2.0 just got released as beta. It's not available at the usual place as we are testing it internally before making 1.2.0 final.

This version has a lot of changes, most notable custom CPU teams.

If anyone is interested in helping test, let me know.

Here are the release notes

Version 1.2.0b0

This is a huge change. It is beta zero as there are almost certainly bugs in it. Most notably, this version adds cpu custom teams.

Changes

  • Bug fix: Ryo's last name was misspelled.
  • Bug fix: The "HERE COMES CHALLENGER" graphic no longer causes names to get cut off in a strange way.
  • Bug fix: "HERE COMES CHALLENGER" no longer has missing tiles in AES mode.
  • Rugal is no longer shown on the character select screen before you fight him. This is to match what KOF95 does.
  • When continuing, the CPU cursor now matches what KOF95 does.
  • To see the version string, you now need to hold P1 start and P2 start.
  • A tiny fix in the Japanese ending when Spanish is set as the language.
  • The new endings are now translated into Japanese.
  • The CPU can choose custom teams now, just like human players.

Known Issues

There are no known issues. But there are very likely bugs to be found yet. That is why this release is a beta.

And more on CPU custom teams

CPU Custom Teams

Like most KOF games, the CPU can now choose a custom team with this hack. That means the CPU's team can be formed out of any of the 24 characters, just like a player's team.

Here are the guidelines

  • If you choose an original 8 team (the teams in the original game), then the CPU will also stick to original teams. You will also get the original team's cutscenes and ending. So when you choose an original team, the hack reverts entirely back to vanilla KOF94.
  • If you choose a custom team, there is about a 62% chance the CPU will stick with original teams.
  • When starting a new game, you can hold C while pressing start to force the CPU to use custom teams. If you do it correctly, you will hear "go red!". This means the CPU will always use custom teams, even if you choose an original 8 team.
  • When starting a new game, you can hold D while pressing start to force the CPU to use original 8 teams.
