Issue on Unibios on AES?

Hi, I recently got Unibios 4.0 installed on my Japanese AES, better late than never, and at the same time I found a cheap copy of Ninja Commando. Trying both I see the following: if I set the console to Japanese Arcade I have no sound on the intro and free play, the actual game sounds fine. If I set it US Arcade I have a garbled screen before the intro, then same as Japanese, no intro sound, free play and normal sound in game. If I set the AES to console on Unibios, independently from the region I get sound on the intro and everything looks fine. Is this normal? I am new to Unibios and I have no idea why arcade would be free play and no intro sound. Any other tests that I should try?

This is normal. Here's a copypasta from the Unibios FAQ:

AES ONLY ISSUES
  • There are no attract mode sounds for many games when running in MVS mode. This is because they read the demo sound soft dip from the backup SRAM which the AES doesn't have (this problem exists on the DEBUG bios also).
  • Some early games like Nam 1975 for example will have corrupted 'How to Play' screens when in arcade mode. This is because the AES does not have the needed character font built in that the MVS has.
  • When in USA arcade mode games will have a corrupted 'Winners don't use Drugs' screen. This is because the AES does not have the needed character font built in that the MVS has.

Thank you so much! Is the free play normal too then?

It depends on the game and the mode. Most games in AES mode limit you to 4 credits but there is often a cheat you can enable in the Start + Select menu to give you unlimited credits. In MVS mode you'll have to press Select to add credits, there usually isn't a freeplay option since an actual MVS board has a physical dipswitch to enable freeplay, but you can hit select all you want to give yourself more credits.

Yeah, it's a known issue, and I do find this kind of annoying when I'm using my AES.

Not the Unibios's fault though. Most of the games are coded to read the soft dip setting directly from the SRAM while running in MVS mode, which doesn't exist on an AES.

Somebody on these forums once did a hack to add SRAM to an AES, but it was way more trouble than it was worth.

Thanks both for the info, being new to Unibios I thought there was something wrong with my AES, but as odd as it is at the end of the day it’s not a big deal on Ninja Commando and the Unibios still gives great options!

The SRAM is one advantage that a CMVS has over an AES. I also like that the Unibios allows an option to hide the Unibios splash screen while running on an MVS, and the soft dip settings menu screen is much better on an MVS, saving your settings to the SRAM.

But I prefer the AES form factor. It looks good in an entertainment center, it is the original, and I like that it has a built-in stereo headphone jack and memory card slot.
