Is NES collecting even a realistic option these days?

Guys I have to tell you something. I never played/owned Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES.

I only had it on the Atari Lynx.

I feel so ashamed.

Oh, and if you think it was hard playing the game on a TV w/ a dogbone, trying playing on a frackin lynx.

Oh and I'd never go for a complete in box or full NES collection, that's boinkers

I have however thought about getting all the original black box games CIB. That seems more attainable and I love the artwork on those games.

I'm sure many of you fools already have this set and I despise you to no end.

I had the same problem up until good replacement 72-pin connectors hit the market. Since then? No problems, the toaster is actually quite reliable once you can replace the I/O units.

No. Fuck no. I'd never try a complete NES set...way too much trouble and WAY too much $$. Especially if you consider those stupid NWC carts needed to be "complete".

The original NES "black box" boxes are really fragile. I have a rather beat up Hogan's Alley and a really nice shape Original Super Mario Bros. They even have a flimsy hang-tag built into the back of them that if used, is almost always ripped clean off.

Why does the first post have a CIB Super Nintendo game in the picture? I thought this was about NES games.

Yeah they are. I have a couple including Balloon Fight, Pro Wrestling and Gyromite. But I am not a stickler for condition, I just like the pretty pictures.

If it has some wear and tear, no biggie for me.

This is something I'd like to know about. Wonder if there was ever an interview out there about why they went that direction, and if there were any anime influences for that.
There was an interview, pretty extensive too, it's long as hell, I read it years ago. Pasky is way off base. For starters NG3 is the hardest of the trilogy, the game design differs from the other 'cause there's a different director, this new director actually worked on the previous NG titles. NG3 is the best NG game there is, best game for the NES hands down. We're talking US NG3, not the famicom and def not the trilogy SNES. All 3 games are awesome with 2 being the easiest.

Against better judgement I started buying famicom carts here and there. I only have about 15 or so. Mostly just the stuff I'd like to see my kid play, but I know in reality she won't have anything to do with them.

That's what I started doing. Most are no more than $15 for stuff like Rockman 2.

I have around 150 CIB NES games. Quite a few of them have been upgraded via trades, etc. A couple are sealed...none of them cost me more than $100. There are only a couple I'd love to have like Power Blade 2, Rescue Rangers 2, and Surprise at Dinosaur Peak...other than that, I'm pretty much done with NES.

That being said, no, it's not realistic to go for a complete set.

I go to conventions several times a year. The very serious collectors, who want a complete set (minus the 2 NWC carts) are always missing the same 4 or so games: the three Panesian porn games and Stadium Events. This is usually a huge hurdle as just getting these 4 games, in today's prices, could potentially set you back over $10k.

Really soak that in....what you just said.

4 completely useless, shitty games and the morons willing to part with in excess of $10K to get them...

It is amazing how stupid "collectors" really can be...

Oh, trust me, I have. I talk to collectors all the time, urging them not to go for a complete set...very dumb. Too many people would prefer to listen to Pat the NES Punk than reason.

I really wonder how that feels when you finally get that last irrelevant title to complete your pointless NES set. Standing there, looking at over 700 stupid games representing years of effort and enough money to buy a new life...

I wonder the if the compelling feeling to eat a lead salad sets in...

So much collecting hate, especially from people who freely admit to collecting. Way I see it, either collect or don't collect, everyone has their own idea of what is a reasonable level of money or time to spend on all this (can we all agree absolutely pointless) shit, just leave people to get on with it.

Funnily, my son is obsessed with Nintendo and he's only 3. He then was heavy into Pacman videos on YT, so I picked up a Pacman cart for the Famicom and downloaded the Lite App for the iPad. Basically it's YouTube that's done it to him, it's been a small instigation on my part. He knows Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, all from YT. I came home from work tonight and my wife had a Super Mario Bros. longplay video on, she said it'd been in repeat for hours as he wanted to listen to "Mario music". I couldn't believe it. He was getting pissed at the player too for missing the coins.

Start your kids on 2600 and move up, it works, and YT is the key!

100% going to try this out

Collectards immediately switch to hoarding up a fullset for 'next' retro system on the list. They are addicted to spending cash and getting packages in the mail, can't just cold turkey that.

*Cringe*

Nothing like looking at 30+ year-old man children still dressing like they're 13 talking about their game collection.

Agreed. Nearly all of us on here are collector's of at least 1 system or platform. Would like to see some collection pics in addition to the critiques of full-set collector's. (not that there is anything wrong with full sets, imo)
