Is KOF 2004 any good? What is the story behind it?

So I was on ebay last night and saw KOF 2004 for MVS and thought to myself "crap this must be super rare and this guy doesn't know what he has" so before even taking a moment to research it I bought it immediately to end the auction and guarantee the game to me. I called a buddy and he said he heard it was complete and utter crap[ with sprite rips from previous KOF games. Has anyone played it and is it any good? It isn't an extreme loss I only spent $55 on it if so.

All KOF MVS carts after 2003 are boots. No Exceptions.

After 2003, KOF went to Atomiswave, and then on to Taito Type X/X2.

I know it is a boot but is it any good? I would never resell it, I mean it is something cool to have in the collection just for the sake of having it even if it doesnt get played.

KOF 2004 is actually a very skillfully done backport by fans of KOF XI on Atomiswave. Arguably it has more fitting backgrounds as they don't clash with the low res character sprites. The music is not too good though, they should have gotten some better talent on board to convert the music into YM2610 ADPCM. Some of the hit detection could be better as well, but it's a decent effort.

'04 is a rare MVS boot--Rarer that SSVS.

And only a handful of lucky individuals in the NEO COMMUNITY are ever lucky enough to see it--let alone play it.

It's even rarer than KOF GLADIATOR.

Rarer than Bang Bead and Fight Fever.

The carts are like a Bust-A-Move with an 083 NGH number.

There is no official King of Fighters 2004. The closest game to that is King of Fighters XI (released in 2005), which was the next game in the main series after King of Fighters 2003 (which was the 10th game in the series).
King of Fighters Neowave was released in 2004 (for the Atomiswave), but is not considered a game in the main KOF series.

A good number of multicarts have this (as well as King of Gladiators) included.

When I read the title I was like Wtf? Never heard of 04, but now I know why. XI was a pretty fun game though.

Yup. In King of Gladiators there are a few character sprites that were redrawn.
