First things first you need a file that you want to convert to MPEG-4.

I used a Quicktime (.MOV) file from www.apple.com/trailers you can use anything to convert the preliminary file. I used Quicktime Pro 6 to first Save the Quicktime, then Export it (using quicktime) for further conversion.

Next you will need to use a Program to convert it to the PSP standard, Sony Has software availible, but I have not been able to purchase it, i've found that 3GP Converter Version 0.22 has the necessary drivers to convert it properly. You can download it here. (Although it's apparently from a Hacker Group... so legality and the longevity of this link is questionable)
http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/

next setup your memory stick Root Directory to accept the files, in my case its D:\

First create a directory called "MP_ROOT"

Then inside that Directory called "100MNV01"

"The file name of the video file should be something like M4V00001.MP4. If you want to add another file, then name it M4V00002.MP4. The third file should be M4V00003.MP4 and so on..."

The Converter Will automatically rename it to a Suitable format, so if using the "direct" mode you shouldnt have to manually rename it, it should be suitable.

The Memory Stick Dir should look like this:
Image11.jpg

Ok using quicktime pro 6,

First open up the .mov file and select "Export"
Image1.jpg

Then Select export as MPEG-4 and then select the encoding "Options"
Image2.jpg

In the options you can select the Video/Audio Bitrates I've found for most impressive video that is closest to the original High Quicktime Bitrate, use around 1500... you can use as little as 300k but it will look like a bad webcast and be very blocky, although it will be a very small file, this is up to you... but very important.
Image3.jpg

Ok once you've exported the mov into a new .mp4 file open up "3GP converter 0.22" Downloadable Here: http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/

Open up the Setup Executable

Image4.jpg

Then either alot of Japanese or Gibberish will appear, depending on your system fonts I believe.
And select the MP4 option "Transcoding_PSP_Direct.ini"
Image5.jpg

Then select the conversion quality, it should be close to what you originally set the MP4 file to... in my case i'm selecting QVGA/29.97fps/1500kbps Video 128Kps Audio for High/Impressive Quality.

Image6.jpg

I believe the program has a browse for Option, but in my case it made the program freeze up, but never fear you can Drag And drop the MP4 file for encoding in the top area, in fact for multiple files you can keep on dragging them and queue them up one after another.

Image7.jpg

The Encoder should immediately start encoding, on my system it automatically saved the files to my /Desktop folder...

Image8.jpg

Ok once its done Re-encoding the file (yet again) it should create appropriately named files, 1 video file, and one helpful thumnail file that will look something like this, and in my case on your desktop.
Image10.jpg

Then simply open up the prepared Memory Stick Video Directory
and drag and drop/cut and paste/or copy the 2 files into the D:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 directory, and once they're done you should be good to go.

Image9.jpg

Insert in the PSP and you should be able to see them, as long as theyre properly mounted and named.

Open the Video Area, and you should see the Thumbnail(s) for all videos properly on there...provided you put the thumnail file.
PSPShot1.jpg

View and Enjoy!!!

Note I've found widescreen files look best after pressing triangle and selecting the "Full Screen" mode, it looks like some might be cropped a little, but the aspect ratio is preserved and the video looks VERY nice... note bad photo, the image is VERY sharp....

It should Be noted that ANYTHING is transcodable, provided you have the storage availible on your memory stick...

The PSP comes with a 32 MB Memory stick, which held about 5 Medium Quality Movie trailers... coming to about 6-10 minutes...

Sony has just released a 1 GB Memory Stick Duo PRO, the format the PSP recognizes.
(NOTE THE LARGER NON DUO STICKS WILL NOT WORK) the PSP needs Duo Sticks...

Here's a link to the 1 GB Stick Directly from Sony... It can be found cheaper elsewhere.
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...acc_DIMemoryStickMedia_MemoryStickProDuomedia

Also you could buy 2 512 Pro DUO sticks...

http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...acc_DIMemoryStickMedia_MemoryStickProDuomedia

I am guessing...properly encoded at nice bitrates you could probably fit two Full Length divx converted Movies one 1, 1 GB Memory Stick Pro DUO... depending on low bitrates, and at the very least 1...

Thanks for the walkthrough this is great!

Shouldn't you be able to watch at least two full length movies by only reading from the memory stick?

Not what I asked let me rephrase... Do you think the battery will last through 2 movies?

Good Point.

I think You MIGHT be able to get through 1.5 movies...on low brightness settings

Personally I already bought an extra li-on battery pack, that I can take with me if I go on a trip....

Battery Life Certainly is a bitch, but it's cool to know that there is the capability.

Here is a similar guide, using the same program, and to write to the memory stick, if you don't have a memory stick writer on your PC already, you can plug in the USB cable and transfer files onto the memory stick that way...

Also there is some helpful info on properly decrypting DVD's.

The program keeps having errors when converting the MP4 file :mad:

I'll keep trying to troubleshoot, I guess.

I'm doing everything you listed above, including exporting the files from Quicktime Pro 6.0, and the 3GP Converter always says "an error has occured" when it is done transcoding the file. I have completely uninstalled/re-downloaded+re-installed the 3GP Converter and I still am having the same problems. Can anyone else confirms if this works?

Hmm, thats odd... the program gave me errors when I tried a format it was not equipped for...example raw unconverted .mov file...

make sure your Quicktime is the latest version, because it is my understanding that the 3GP program makes use of the same Quicktime drivers...

Also check the bitrates on the original Quicktime transcoding of the MP4 (before the 3gp Conversion) and try to keep it under 1500 kps... or exactly at 1500... also make sure its not set to PAL or anything... mine was set for NTSC... Best I can come up with.

Thanks for the help! 'Twas that the drivers on my Quicktime needed to be updated. I knew it would end up being something stupid on my part.

It works great! Porn on the go. I've not been using the Quicktime part though, just droppping any old movie file into the converter and it seems to work fine.
I have just ordered the Sony "Image Converter 2" software, which is the official one. I'll let you know if that works any better.

yeah~ red dwarf for the psp :)
92MB for a 30mn episode at 384kb/s, sony program does a pretty good job on low bitrates for video but a bit less good for audio (on my beta)

Anyway i am pretty happy with the compromise size/quality

Here is another mirror of that guide that enagadget posted, hosted by wooba... In case the other link dies or something...

http://www.wooba.com/archives/2004/...o-your-sony-playstation-portable-psp-for-free

Also it should be noted that this site and others are reporting that the Official Sony Software Unnecessarily bloats the converted filesizes to in some cases be even larger than the original file, and the 3GP program at current seems to be the most efficient/effective way.

Just to let u guys know. Theres been a util released that allows you to display nonstandard resolution movies on the psp. It works by patching some parts of the movie to trick the PSP into thinking its the compatable resolution. U can get some nice 16x9 encodes done with it.

http://runtime.dyndns.org/psprez-b1.zip

http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=1007 This thread talks about it, while also talking through some 3gp encoder settings.

I just used the following in 3gp transcoding.ini with some good results. A little bit of quality distortion, but managed to get a 78min movie (Beavis & Butt-head Do America) to 384mb, encoded at 16x9.
Code:
[Item9]
Title=Video: 368x208 (463kbps // Audio: 128kbps // 2 Pass)
TitleE=Video: 368x208 (463kbps // Audio: 128kbps // 2 Pass)
Command0=""<%AppPath%>\cores\ffmpeg" -y -i "<%InputFile%>" -pass 1 -passlogfile "<%TemporaryFile%>" -title "<%Title%>" -bitexact -vcodec xvid -s 368x208 -r 29.97 -b 463 -acodec aac -ac 2 -ar 24000 -ab 64 -f 3gp "<%TemporaryFile%>.3gp""
Command1=""<%AppPath%>\cores\ffmpeg" -y -i "<%InputFile%>" -pass 2 -passlogfile "<%TemporaryFile%>" -title "<%Title%>" -bitexact -vcodec xvid -s 368x208 -r 29.97 -b 463 -acodec aac -ac 2 -ar 24000 -ab 64 -f 3gp "<%TemporaryFile%>.3gp""
Command2=""<%AppPath%>\cores\QT3GPPFlatten" "<%TemporaryFile%>.3gp" "<%TemporaryFile%>_2.3gp" -c QT_3GPP(MobileMP4)_QVGA_AAC.ini"
Command3="rm "<%TemporaryFile%>.3gp""
Command4=""<%AppPath%>\cores\ATOMChanger" "<%TemporaryFile%>_2.3gp" "<%OutputPath%>M4V<%RandomNumber5%>.MP4" "Camouflage_MP4_for_PSP.ini""
Command5="rm "<%TemporaryFile%>_2.3gp""
Command6="rm "<%TemporaryFile%>-0.log""
Command7=""<%AppPath%>\cores\ffmpeg" -y -i "<%InputFile%>" -f singlejpeg -ss 5 -vframes 1 -s 70x52 -an "<%OutputPath%>M4V<%RandomNumber5%>.THM""
