I have a really good idea. I'd like to get Caine's Arcade a real cab.

Would anyone be willing to help me raise some money to buy this kid a candy cab?

Remember when you were that age? How bad you wanted an arcade machine?

We could raise the cash, and even pay someone to drop off the cab, with all of our names on it, from this website.

I figure we can go through Matsu and have maybe a local drop it off.

Figure $1500 should be enough for everything. $1600 tops.

Could you imagine the look on that kids face if he got a real cab and the media attention it would get?

I think it's a great idea, thoughts?

Matsu is local to this kid. It would be way less than 1600. Next time I see 300wins in troll box, I'll ask him if he's spoke w/ M lately. I believe he & Rog are tight.

As someone who spent time in Caine's part of LA as a nine-year old, I can tell you...this would blow his socks off.

Forget hoping the Frogger machine @ AM/PM works-you got your own cab, son!

We should get an UO POKO board to go in it!

If Matsu's are all beaters at the moment (dunno just as a back up in case) Ken @ THE GAMEROOM out of Utah has a sweet CyberLead that has been up on eBay for endless. He might even cut a break or throw in a PCB if he gets behind the charitable notion.

850+____uShip (let's guess high and say 275= well under 1500.

This is do-able.

OK, I think this is a great idea.

What do you guys think our goal should be?

Should we preorder a cab?

I actually wasn't muuuuch older than him when I got my first cab ;)

Get him a broken Craigslist special that he will learn to fix and acquire skill in doing so... it's probably one of the most life-changing things I did, fixing my cab at age 14. I wouldn't be where I am today.

edit: hmm I AM looking to get rid of my MVS cab after I build my supergun, it does need repair lol...

Let me know what you plan on doing Tonk. I might not have a lot of pull with Arcade Hunters, but for some reason I've got almost 600 followers on Twitter, so hopefully I can get the word out.

I'm on the fence.

It's not the money. The kid looks happy with what he has. Maybe we could do something more meaningful? If you're hellbent to do it I'll help, just thinking ..

OK, so real talk fellas.

While I admire Caine's enthusiasm (I was grinning ear to ear when I saw the video), I don't think it's a good lesson to teach a kid that if you act cute enough and want something enough (and if some Reddit hipster gets the internet excitable enough), you'll be rewarded with the object of your desire. There's already a college fund for the kid, and I think a donation towards that would be a lot more meaningful than giving him what amounts to an enormous video game that he really really likes.

You want to get him something physical, get him some electrical supplies, "my first electronics kit - 101 projects in one!" type things, some simple books on how things work (doesn't have to be electronics, teach the little guy how a combustion engine works while you're at it and things like that). When I was a bit younger than him I was making electromagnets and stuff like that with my dad, my parents let me ask questions about anything I wanted, and would encourage me to check out books from the library that explained things in depth. That sort of encouragement started me down a long path... I'm an engineer as a result of wanting to understand how the world works. Even after graduating, all I want to do is learn, and apply my knowledge.

A Lego Mindstorm kit would be perfect.

great idea but I wonder if he would really want a candy cab at all, I mean his model is more on the redemption/ carnival games side and that seems to be where his passion lies.

Exactly.

He doesn't give a shit about old video games.

Not to mention his college fund is over $175,000.

But yeah, let's go donate a lot of money to this kid and get him something he won't understand.

I realize life's lessons - but I was a kid with big dreams.

I would have loved for this to happen to me.

If an arcade machine showed up at my toy arcade, I'd never forget it.

If you disagree, fine, but do as Adam did and offer constructive criticism as to why.

If this doesn't work, that's cool, I'm sure I can round up some partners. I really think I want to do this.

Redemption games are about as far as you can go with cardboard.

Here's some reasons why it's a bad idea.

1. Who's gonna fix issues with it? I don't think the kid is going too. Dad probably isn't, it would probably just end up on craigslist. Terrible idea to have a kid reaching inside a box with high voltage components.

2. It seems the fun for him is in the creation process.

If you wanted to get him anything, I'd suggest something less complicated yet keeping with his redemption style theme. Maybe something he could put together (or with help from dad)

This.

Whenever I expect some kids to show up and play my cab, I always plug a multicart in so they won't try to open the cab and change the carts by themselves. Cabs don't have the safety features of common consoles.

..this is a very valid point. God knows I know what I'm doing and I've been zapped god knows HOW many times fixing monitors. If you're still going to do this, I would get him the foozball table or an airhockey board. They're cheap, easy to put together/fix and fit the theme like SSS pointed out. He'll still get the marvel of putting it together and seeing how it works yet learn a bit about how the real games work.

You can also get the "my first electronics kit - 101 projects in one!" and some reference books so he can learn more and see if he wants to further his interests. (and stay under the 1500 budget). ...but definitely not a full on electricity can kill you cabinet. You could be held liable (god I so wanted to say libel) if he gets hurt from it.
