Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! I told myself I'm not going to restore any more cabs because of the time and energy that went into my other 2 restoration jobs but I couldn't pass this one up.

Someone local to me posted this Type II cab for sale with a spare monitor and chassis and since the monitor on my Super Neo has been looking funny I decided it was worth it to grab everything to have a spare for my current cab and finally have a dedicated Naomi / Atomiswave cab instead of having to mess with mobos and psu's.

It originally came from an operator Okinawa and the sea air has not been friendly to it at all. Chunks of the front cover panel broke if you looked at it funny but the main body seems to be doing ok for the time being. There will be parts around the bottom that will probably break away during the restore so I may have some missing chunks in the final product.

I think to save time and grief I'm going to get some sandblast and powdercoating quotes locally rather than trying to do everything myself like I did before. Sandblasting on my own is still an option since Harbor Freight has some cheapo blasters that might do the trick for me but I don't know if I want to mess with any of that since I'm in the middle of planning a move.

Here are the pics, hopefully I'll be able to post updates as they happen rather than just posting them all at once like my other posts.

Holy rust fuck batman!!! As a guy who daily drives a classic truck, this makes me want to puke. I dont even know if there is enough metal there to rust inhibitor and salvage. :( good luck!!!

The stakes are high now, we must see this resurrected.

I think there's a good amount that will be salvageable, gonna go get a quote today from a shop that works with my company so hoping they'll hook it up. With how scarce candy cabs have gotten in the last few years it would be a shame to see this one rot away.

does she fire up?

When I picked it up nothing was hooked up but the seller is a long time collector and player who I trust and he said that it had the chassis recapped and was working before he started to take it apart to get it sandblasted himself. Now, if anything happened between when he took it apart til when I moved it is another story. Won't know until later I guess!

Damn that thing is in rough shape. It’s a shame considering how uncommon candy cabs are now

I know all about this cab…you got it from a guy in the military that just moved back stateside. He got it from my friend who had stored outside for quite some time. He traded it to the guy for a mostly complete Blast. I had to drill the locks off that cab. It’s pretty far gone. My friend wanted me to get it back together, but I was apprehensive due to the corrosion. Also getting another PCB access door would be difficult to find. The original was just too far gone to be repaired in my opinion. We tried fixing the original monitor, but the chassis was toast. If you got the original tube that came with it, it should be good. I tested it with my BK467. All three guns where great...just needed a chassis.

I’m going to follow this thread. Would love to see it come together. Maybe I can help if you need something welded.

Small world. …where are you located?

I just came back from Okinawa myself this summer. Brought two Blasts, a NAC, a Astro, a regular NEO 29 and a Tecmo Urban.

Oh awesome, you must be the friend he was talking about when I was picking it up! I'm in San Diego, didn't take me too long to grab it from base where it was located. So I have 2 chassis, he mentioned one of them was recapped. Any info you got on the electronics that you can tell me would be awesome. Luckily if only one of the chassis are good it doesn't matter because the monitor would just go inside my Super Neo 29 anyway and that has a working chassis. That's awesome, I was pretty amazed at all the stuff he had brought over with him from Okinawa.

I got a quote on sandblast and powdercoat today and it was more than reasonable, will probably get that done. There will definitely be parts of the cab where the rust ate in too deep and I might have pock marks and holes in it but it beats watching this thing decay and die a slow and terrible death. I'll post pics of before and after once I get them done. Taking the cab fully apart this weekend so I can drop it off at the powdercoat place on Monday. Got quoted 3 weeks so that will be awesome, took me forever to do everything myself last time.

I get lucky on access panels from time to time but even if I can't find one I rarely keep them on anyway for easy access so no worries there. Although if anyone has a spare hmu.

I only met him once. He got the cab from a mutual friend. The chassis that originally came with this was a Hitachi and was too far gone to rebuild. Was he able to locate a replacement? Additionally the original power supply was also toast. I suggested to my friend to just retrofit with a generic JAMMA harness and a good power supply. Since we couldn’t gind the right chassis, I think he decided to pass on the project.

Are you putting a 64 pcb in there? There was pcb for sale on the KLOV.

If I may be so bold: What kind of coin did you drop for something in this condition?

So I ended up moving and didn't have time to work on this for a while. Normally I'd take lots of photos to document the process but with the move and other things going on I just tried to get this thing taken apart as quick as possible and forgot to take pictures before I took to powdercoat.

Powdercoat place finished almost all the panels in a couple of days, some areas you can tell are pitted where the rust ate away at the metal. I'm worried about the body, a considerable amount will probably be gone especially around the bottom of the cab. Will know once they tell me they're done. I will take pics of the panels and post them once I get around them again. Looks great for what it is especially compared to how it all looked before.

The guy ended up shafting me by charging me more than what I got quoted but at this point I just want to complete the cab and be done with it.

There's 2 chassis and 2 monitors, one is supposed to have been recapped but I have no way to verify at the moment. I don't know if they both work or not or if something happened during shipment. I really hope all the monitors are still good.

I have 3 64 mobos, 2 fighting types and 1 beast busters. I might put one in there but this cab may just be my Naomi/Atomiswave cab since I rarely play the 64 games I have. It'll also be an excuse to use that Sun PSU since this one doesn't have the original psu anymore.

It was a decent deal with the extra monitor and chassis but the amount I've put into this so far is making me wish I passed on it or made time to do a lot of the work myself like my previous cabs. Since I was moving I didn't have much time to figure out other options than having other people work on it for me this time.

Really looking forward to the after pics on this one!

Btw Yaton is still regularly saccing cabs by the warehouse full if you decide you need a new access panel.

Yeah for sure. I figured I can find one from either Yaton or KC at some point, same with a PSU if I really needed it.

Just got a call saying the body is ready for pickup, might not be able to make it there until next week but I'll for sure document how it looks before I apply side art. Speaking of which, I forgot to order side art lol

Goddamn I thought this was gonna look worse. There is hope for this cab yet. Aside from the Swiss cheesing on the side that no one will see this is amazing.

You can definitely tell there’s pitting from the rust but it’s way better than I thought it would be. I just need to do some work on the plastic and it’s going to look right at home next to my type 1 cab.
