Damn. That’s a pretty horrible way to go for everyone involved.

The Hantavirus?

That is fucking wild...

I know deer mice are in parts of CA, but there probably hasn't even been a thousand cases of it in US in over a decade.

I actually spent some time learning about that when I went down a weird avenue of animal-to-human viruses/illnesses.

How did nobody check on them long enough for the dog to starve to death?
Hantavirus hit the four corner region of the U.S. back in 1993. Remember it as a very big news deal when it happened. From Wikipedia: In 1993, an outbreak of highly lethal acute respiratory distress syndrome occurred in the Four Corners region of the United States. This outbreak was determined to be caused by a hantavirus, now named Sin Nombre virus, and represented the first confirmed instance of pathogenic hantaviruses in the Americas as well as the discovery of a new type of disease caused by hantaviruses. The new disease was named "hantavirus pulmonary syndrome".

Is it classist that I just assumed all rich people have some kind of maid, house-servant person, live-in chef, etc...?
I think they were supposedly quite private but gonna assume they at least had outside stuff like yard service and pool maintenance. Wife probably took care of the house and maybe the illness took her out before she called for help. Sad situation all around.

Welp, I don't think anyone here guessed the wife went first. So did Gene go faster from grief like Debbie Reynolds (Carrie Fisher's mom)?

Gene had dementia, he may not have even realized what was going on and died because she wasn't there to take care of him

He also likely didn't take his medication or other care needed to keep him alive.

Being 95 with heart disease and going a week without your meds can be a death sentence.

Dementia can take people quick. My neighbor was diagnosed, and within 100 days he was put into hospice and gone. Apparently it's very common for them to stop eating, and they don't bother with feeding tubes at that point. We knew he was going, but we didn't know how bad it was until the end. I would often help him with his car and computer. I could see him 30 min later and ask if I was the one helping him.

It's a terrible way for Gene to be remembered, but this is the reality for most of us if we make it to 90.

Hantavirus is nuts, it can readily kill healthy young people. When I lived in Arizona, we were told to be careful cleaning up rodent shit, because it can stay dormant there.
