Gameboy or GBC "hidden gems"?

This really isn't a hidden gem in the real sense, but up until the other day I had no idea how good this version was. Youtube randomly suggested a video review of it and I kind of assumed the reviewer was just being too favorable on it due to nostalgia, but I've been playing it for a few days and it rules. It is insanely charming and impressive for a GBC game.

I read this interview a few months ago and really enjoyed it despite never playing a DQ game, from the 1989 NES team that made DQIII: https://shmuplations.com/dragonquestiii/

Resident Evil Gaiden was terrible but what a unique game. The first, and for a long time, only game where Barry Burton was playable.

They kept revisiting this idea of RE on a ship forever. I thought Dead Aim did a pretty good job of that but I understand why people wouldn't like it.

I still have my copy of both those games. It's unlikely I'll ever sell either one of them.

Holy shit Gaiden is going for big bucks on eBay. Stupid big prices. Some people are selling the manual, by itself, for $200.

Castlevania: Legends is another game I still own complete and it is bad but such a unique entry into the series for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with the gameplay.

Another game going for stupid big prices but at least this one is on one of the recent collections.

I've listened to a bunch of in-depth DQ retrospectives and it's one of the few game series where I actually enjoy doing that out of genuine interest instead of mild curiosity.

I can't even find a complete opened copy of Resident Evil Gaiden on eGay but there is a brand new, unopened copy someone is trying to sell for $2500. A fool and their money...

Im in a few collector groups in facebook just to see the dumb shit people think are worth $1,000's.
There are some truly degenerate collectors that are living in their mom's basement with a wall of graded videogames they think are solid gold.

My materialism is rooted in love for the thing I am buying. Nearly ever single time.

But if I hold on to something for too long and my attitude is 'well, at least I own it' and I'm not actually using it, I realize I may have held on to it for too long and just sell it.

Someone I know got really mad at me for selling my Zelda collection.

He was like 'You could have sold them to me!'

I said 'Not at eBay prices!'

He was like 'We could have worked something out.'

I said 'I am not a credit card company. I want all the money now. If you can give me all the money now, we can make a deal. Otherwise, see you on eBay.'

Same. I had a MASSIVE PCE collection for the better part of 30 years. Woke up one day and just didn't care anymore. Same happening for my GB collection slowly as well. The struggle to give a shit about plastic is fading fast. I still play GB all the time, but man...these emulator handhelds really changed the game for me. I'd much rather have money...beer....less crap my wife has to deal with when I die. I don't know how some of you old timers are still interested in collecting shit.

That said, prolly hang onto most my GB stuff because it takes up so little space. :kernow:

I feel as though if you aren't building a museum for these things, or at least a collector's showroom, and you don't have a career in displaying your retro gaming goods, then the only other reason to hold on to them is personal passion.

My friend Ray, who builds those custom cabinets, still has all of his Metal Gear games up through the PS3 era. He didn't want to get into any consoles after that generation. But he has a legit fan's passion for that franchise so that makes sense to me.

He's gotten rid of a lot of his other retro collectibles and now uses a Mister with a card reader. He has about 50 cards and when he wants to play a game, he flips through the card deck to find the one he wants, taps it to the sensor and it fires up off of a command coded in the card. He has a bunch of adapters and uses his old controllers with them and also has modern mockup USB versions for his daughter to play them with. The Mister is loaded with hundreds of games but he narrows the options to avoid choice paralysis, which is a real thing.

If you have no passion for the item and you aren't using it, it's time to get rid of it somehow.

Just want to add that I legit kind of like RE Gaiden.

I think it's weirdly creative and ambitious enough to warrant a playthrough. I went throughit for the first time like two years ago and surprisingly dug it.

Not saying it is good mind you, but a novelty worth a visit or two.

I don't think so. It's on Switch Online, but I believe that is it.

Yeah you might be right about that. I know I've played it on my Switch.

Either way, spending more than 10 bucks to play Legends is Jagur tier.

*edit* Didn't realize I was responding to a post from the last page

I didn't play Shadow until relatively recently, now it stays in permanent rotation when I want a quick GB game. It's up there with Mario Land, Fall of the Foot Clan and Super C as being a near perfect portable game that's fun but you can run through in one sitting.

Seeing some of the reviews for Dragon Quest 3 HD made me want to reobtain my copies of Dragon Warrior 1+2 and 3 for GBC, and then I saw eBay and said ehhh maybe not. Love the graphics charm and the updates they did compared to the NES versions, but it will remain as a wishlist until I see a decent price

I haven't told any of you boys about this, but starting from late September to New Year's Day, I played Castlevania: The Adventure almost every work day.
The autism continues! Still playing it on my commute, still one lifing it, and, incredibly, still finding new things.

The first three levels have hidden rooms that I found, but the fourth level seemingly didn't have one.

Until I discovered it.

In the unusually large, empty room with the boomerang scythe enemy, if you jump to the left off the rope there's an invisible platform. In the middle of the screen, there's an invisible rope. Climb up it to the secret room. Love this stuff. For years this room stuck out like a sore thumb because it's unlike any other room, now I know why. Great game design, there's a reason for why everything is the way it is in this game.

That's amazing. Making me want to try and find these. I remember as a kid finding little secrets organically. It's the best. Let alone 30 years later.

This is one of my favorites to show people.

Here's the full story: So, playing Operation: C one day probably ~30 years ago, and died several times at this specific spot. This is at the end of level 3, right before the boss at the top of the waterfall. It's not the hardest jump to make at all but, I ended up dying at least twice. I said to myself: "Boy, it sure would be nice if a bridge would appear here." About 30 seconds later, one did. The game literally granted my wish. Definitely should have wrote Nintendo Power after finding it but, alas. I've been letting people know via word of mouth for a long time. Here's photographic evidence but, this works on every version of the game, including recent compilations. Enjoy!

Picked Operation C out tonight based on this post. Jesus H this game is balls hard. Totally forgot. Of course, I wasn't drunk playing it as a kid.

I can usually, about 50-60% of the time, beat it deathless. Definitely thought it was hard when I was 9-10 years old.

I've been playing Metroid 2 the last couple days. I used to be able to beat the game without a map, not quite 100%, but, my end game time was like 39 mins. Last 2 were 1:41 and 1:43, last time accidentally missing the screw attack, as well. Crazy how much your skill level atrophies over the years.
