Yeah its OK. I liked how it had the adapter to play SMS games. Never owned a Game Gear, but played it a few times.

I would list either the NGPC or the GBA as the best handheld ever. The Game Gear was decent but the screen blur was annoying coupled with awful time given to play on new batteries.

Game gear was great. Never owned one but played a friends alot (while he played my GBC) you can't beat the gameboys for games but the game gear is certainly a worthy machine. NGPC is better though and psp. PSp is the best handheld ever for sure.

Yeah man, just powering that fucker on uses about half the charge in six AAs. It's easily the Hummer of handhelds, no doubt about it.

I hate to be the lone voice of dissent, but I thought the GG was an awful system. The battery life was short, the screen blurry, and the games were lackluster master system rehashes or even ports in many cases. It's not hard to truly appreciate how far modern handhelds like the PSP and the DS have progressed when one takes a retrospective look at dinosaurs like the Game Gear.

The Game Gear helped keep the Master System alive with new software in some territories. Even if you don't like Game Gear as a system, at least it did that. I think the Game Gear is better than the Lynx at least. And if you like Master System, you definitely feel at home on the Game Gear.

You're hardly a lone voice man.

I mean honestly... What was the battery life? About 3 hours for 6 AAs? That's brutal man.

Anyways. I love the Master System as much as anyone, but if I want to play old Sega Master System games, I'll just hook up the system.

Battery life on portables doesn't matter. I wish people would drop that issue. If you owned a Game Gear you were smart enough to buy the official Sega rechargeable battery pack, and the car adapter. Disposable batteries are for suckers. There wasn't a Nomad owner who realistically thought they were going to power the thing with batteries.

As a game machine, I think the Lynx was far superior. Even though it had a small library, it had a lot of quality titles.

Sound sucked, resolution sucked, most games were half-assed by old school small development houses just like on the Jaguar. Game Gear was a far more robust platform that made for a more serious gaming machine. Still, I like the Lynx as a curiosity.

Another +1 for Game Gear love. It was the first hand held system I ever owned, and still a personal favorite.

I just recently picked one up at the flea market for $10 with Sonic 2. I've been wondering (since the screen is subpar) how hard would it be to tap the rgb signal off of one of these and hook it to a JROK encoder?

PS - I also picked up a ton of games for $3 each at the flea market. Good times.

It does when you intend to take the system on the go, hence the title of it's distinction "portable".

Not quite sure which one should be the hummer... the nomad, game gear or turbo express. All three of them need a nuclear power plant to run longer then 5 minutes on batteries.

Damn right again. What if I want to take that shit on the bus? I can concede the point that battery life isn't a deal breaker or anything, but don't tell me it's a non-issue. That's just ridiculous.

Like I've been saying, it's a pipe dream. At any rate, with the Game Gear you need the battery pack. It gets 3-4 hours. At least you don't have to buy batteries then. And you can bring it on the bus. I'm not sure if the Nomad will run off the Game Gear pack or not. Maybe someone can confirm that. At any rate, it would be weird to bring a classic system on the bus nowadays anyway. It's more a novelty to keep at home now.

I can confirm it will run. I had a nomad and a game gear quite a while ago and I would always use the GG pack when the nomad rechargable pack died on me.

I had a Lynx, TurboExpress and GameGear back in the day, and the GG was good but the least impressive of all the classic color screened handhelds IMO.

The TurboExpress was really mindblowing - the games were real console games afterall. Lynx was great in its own way and the color screen innovator. GG was weak in comparison but of course had a few great games thanks to Sega. I especially enjoyed teh Gg Sonics, Shinobis and Defenders of Oasis.

Battery life was the killer in all 3 cases of course. I wasted lots of money on AA's back then. Thank god those days are over.
