Are the writings in white liquid paper? I think that can be cleaned using thinner, but no clue how can that affect the plastic. Anyway, GLWTS.

Yes, that is liquid paper /correction pencil, easy to remove with a bit of rubbing alcohol but I never bothered myself to do it.

I have interest in this game, but what's the story I keep hearing on the encryption mechanism in regards to this game? Is it like a suicide battery that renders the game unplayable after a certain point?

It's not encrypted.

Top of that link says: Protected MVS/AES release that uses the PROGEOP board that is exclusive to this game. No ROMs are encrypted but the P1 includes protection code which will display a red warning screen and hang if it fails. It's a challenge/response setup similar to what the SNK-9201 was used for.

Right, that's I'm getting at. I was referring to this: https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php?title=PROGEOP#PLD

I guess what I meant to say is, as far as that Altera MAX chip on the board is concerned, what causes it to "die" exactly? Is it like a battery where it will eventually die, or is it just the pins weren't made very well so failure is happening that often? Seems like the fix is fairly well documented though.

It's not like a battery, it's just that the Altera chip is used for the protection and if it dies, the cart is unplayable. Unfortunately, these Altera chips seem to be less reliable than the rest of the cart's chips, so they die much more frequently.

Regards.

removing the altera and will need to install a p1 rom (I think its p1, cant remember)

AFAIK, it's not that simple. You need to transplant all the chips, except P1 to a PROGBK1 board, and burn an EPROM with a hacked P1 and install it. You can fix it using the EOP board, but it seems to be much more work, and it's not well documented.

I believe the hacked P1 can be improved (pass the unibios CRC test) by using the work done by neosd with their cart and MSX protection?

Yeah that's right, I did a metal slug x conversion a couple of years ago and I just went ahead and used a bk1 board.
