However, the crappy quality was not my biggest gripe with the system. The online experience was really worse than the quality issues. I tried to get into that call of doodie because that was the only game I had any local friends who were online playing. I won't be making that mistake again. Aside from the games being awful, the whole of xbox live for me was nothing but listening to some dumb ass kids whine, rednecks bashing anyone with skin darker than Tony Orlando, rap music played over the chat system, nigger this and nigger that, and attention whores loosing us every match with their awful kill/death ratio. So you have to mute almost everyone. With that then there was never anything that looked remotely like it could be considered team work. Finally I was like, why am I playing this and why am I paying for this service.

to be fair, in terms of online community, referencing the console versions of CoD is definitely an extreme example

I agree. I'm sure its much worse than the community for Uno, however my point being the community for the biggest selling games being like this from my experience. I could say the same about Halo or many others.

The inherent problem with judging the online community based on player behavior on CoD is that it has the largest player base of any online game outside of MMOs at this point. And now that I think about it, it may even eclipse WoW's lofty numbers.

But the other problem is that this behavior is not unique to the extreme example of Call of Duty. I played Gears heavily in multi for Gears of War 1, and the player behavior was very similar to what is generally witnessed in CoD.

My nephew does more competitive online games, everything from CoD to Street Fighter to even the nerd extreme like DOTA and League of Legends, and he says that similar behavior is rampant in those environments, too. And he's not the only person that has cited the similarities.

Think also about games like DayZ, where people specifically grief others just to make their life miserable, and it's easy to see that online competitive play generally brings out the worst in a considerable percentage of online gamers.

And this behavior is by and large excused/permitted by others due to either callowness, apathy or, most disturbing, because people find it entertaining and don't consider such behavior harmful or offputting.

So in the end, I don't think it's unfair to cite CoD as the ultimate example by which to judge the phenomenon of abbrassive online gaming.

But, just as with sports and advertisement culture, the industry caters to these people more than anyone else. They market to this because it is where they make the biggest money.

The proliferation of dudebro gaming really is the worst thing to happen to the hobby on so many levels. Textbooks on all the harm it has done to the hobby could be written.

as terrible as the communities for those larger mainstream games are, it's quite easy to ignore that terribleness as well by simply having a few friends to party up with--the means are provided to you to make those kind of games more intimate and selectively social if you choose

While I am no fan of the polygoonz, I gotta say, the online shit talking is my fav feature.

Nothing like beating some punk ass 13yr old and then waiting the slew foul mothed "your momma" insults to start flowing.

I almost wish I could do that with my 8 and 16 bit consoles.

My PSOne is a tank. Love that little thing. So much better than the original Playstation.

Only way I'm getting the ONE is if I can has a new Cawadoody where Seal Team 6 teams up with Snoop Lion, 50 cent, the New England Patriots, and a pack of rabid Hyenas (with Rocket Launchers tied to their back) called "Liberty Hounds". And just when you think the story couldn't get any darker or more serious, the commander in chief parachutes in with crates of beer, nachos, LFL players, and copies of Diablo 3 to boost morale. And when I say "LFL" I'm referring to the lingerie football league, not the legends one, you ignorant fucking homoqueer neanderthals.

I suppose then the problem is I don't have enough friends. Really though, if you've only one or two other people in your party then you are pretty much still stuck in the middle of it. Also, It's not really that much fun playing against another team when one of their members is running in a circle shooting at another of their members as they try to earn some kind of stupid in game award, rather than actually play the game.

The means are there to make it a more social experience, but It's not very practical trying to get enough of your group all on at the same time for any lenght of time. Then unless you have enough friends to cover your team and the enemy team you still have to deal with many problems.

While it is possible to turn it into a good experience with some help, you don't have much to work with to do so and is it really worth the effort.

I really liked PSO as I could team with 2 or 3 of my friends and have a good time that was not dependant on total strangers. I wish more games like that would come out.

On the other hand, I can tell exactly which one of the two you are though. XD

That's idiotic logic, and a terrible come back to a legitimate point.

The logic here is that you're buying a non-upgradeable pc from M$ or Sony.

which will be both cheaper to buy to play hd games as well as continue to play. consoles dont need to be upgraded during their life. PC's do.

except for maybe a HDD upgrade, which you can upgrade. sony has left a port for it on the ps3. that was a painless 10 minute process that upgraded my stock 60 gb to 250 gb. equally easy on the 360.

Cheaper? Not with the DLC pricing. GOK how much it takes to buy all the songs from Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

cheaper- as in hardware costs. a console is both cheaper than a gaming pc and also does not need to be upgraded.

and you use guitar hero/ rockband (completely dead franchises) as your example as dlc being too expensive? last i checked dlc is an option unless you are talking ios/android games that wont let you continue your progress (easily) unless you pay into them.

not to mention there is dlc out there for pc's too.

Who pays $599 for an unupgradeable pc? And if it's broken beyond the manufacturer's warranty, you have to pay for the shipping/repairs as well.

And what happens when the server is decommissioned? It's not like you can just setup and host a mirror server on these consoles.

millions upon millions of people. also the price always goes down from the initial offering. i also dont remember seeing an official price listed yet.

same thing for a regular pc. (ps- my launch ps3 is in use right now)

like how people still play PSO on dreamcast online? people find a way when they want to play something.

$599 was the official launch price for the PS3 in North America.

For a regular pc you could always do your own mods and repairs. If you do that to a PS3 or 360, your console will get banned.

Speaking of which, Sony or M$ will sue your ass if you tried doing anything out of the bounds of whatever EULA they've decided. That's why you could never host a server on it.

you can totally repair your own console without it being bricked. and my HDD upgrade could be considered a modification to the original design. i havent been bricked yet. While i am no fan of bricking/banning systems the most of the ones that get that treatment are people that got caught trying to cheat at online play- they make it less fun for everyone else.

that never stopped people before. all i see is speculation and no substance in your argument.

They've already banned people for region modding and stop Lik Sang from selling in Europe. It's all history for everyone to see. If the history isn't substance enough, then I see that no argument will be enough.

i meant your entire argument is full of speculation. i get it- you would rather shell out $3k for a pc to play your games on.
