Dante (Devil May Cry)
Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury)
Guile (Street Fighter II)
Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden)
Richter Belmont (Castlevania: Rondo of Blood)
Solaire (Dark Souls)
Reisalin Stout (Atelier Ryza)
Welkin Gunther (Valkyria Chronicles)
The entire cast of Dragon's Crown
Ezio Auditore (Assassin's Creed II/Brotherhood/Revelations)
Ike (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance)
Chris Redfield (Resident Evil)
Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher)

Those are the ones that jump to mind immediately.

EDIT: Felt cute added Chris Redfield and Geralt (not originally a video game character but this is where he's the most interesting so I'm including him here). May add more later IDK

Man Valkyria Chronicles is so good. I loved how even the most minor squad members had at least some background and characterization. And it was free of that shitty anime character writing you see on most japanese games. You had minor characters wanting to bone other characters, teh gheys, lesbians, some dude with the "Misogynist" skill, people racist against other people (with dark hair lol) it was surprisingly mature in handling all that, there were always at least an extra mission for each squad member.

It's a good game for picking favorite characters I'll tell you what

No one is perfect.

Valkyria Chronicles has excellent gameplay. I didn’t care for the characters and had a hard time enjoying the story. The happy go lucky nature of the characters just clashes too much with the purported serious nature of the story. For me, the tone was all wrong.

I don't agree since it's supposed to be a fantasy anime take on WWII but I get it, that's completely fair.

Maybe.

I felt the same way about Disgaea and i was a young man when that came out and still playing JRPGs.

Top notch gameplay but too goofy for me.

I get that.

But I AM perfect, you homo.

I consider Valkyria Chronicles a cousin of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's works, especially Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It's a grim vision of a post apocalyptic future but it also has silly things like caricatured portrayals of people, cute animal companions and a hopeful vision for the future despite how lost everything seems to be.

What Valkyria Chronicles does so much better than a lot of other war stories is that it remembers the humanity of its characters, regardless of the side they're fighting on. When the fighting is done, we have to learn how to recognize one another as human beings and learn to get along. This story does that very, very well. This is the reason that young people are often the central characters of such stories in Japan. Adults have lost the plot (see also Mobile Suit Gundam).

It's a great war story precisely because it maintains its optimism through charming events like a pig mascot, vegetable skills and an insect/nature loving MC. It also has romantic loops that actually close (far more realistic for long wars where relationships develop), rare for anime that infantilizes its heroes and wants them to forever remain in that uncertain relationship limbo.

And yet, for all that, its story about racism against a historically persecuted people wrongly vilified for things they never did as well as the crisis of conscience that occurs with many of its characters is vastly more realistic a portrayal of what warfighters are like than a lot of the overzealous one dimensional interpretations we get so often.
