Same video twice.

Hayao has always been the best Hugo player in the world but he never travelled to events (outside of Tokyo, at least). He's also a bonafide lovable weirdo. One of the great things about Evo the last few years is that they've made a concerted effort to help a lot of the local Japanese legends that usually don't travel to get their visas/passports situated to come out and visit.

Having Hayao not only come out but show off top-level 3S Hugo play on the big stage was the highlight of this year's Evo. For me, anyway.

Edit: Forgive the potato cam on some of these but here's a highlight reel of ridiculous plays he's made in local Tokyo 3S tournaments.
Spoiler: Dude in a weird thong.

What did he place at EVO?

4th out of over 1,000 entrants. Having to sift through the army of Chuns, Kens and Yuns as a Hugo player is a herculean feat. He pulled so many games out of his ass with perfectly-timed Tachi-Gigases. That using the standing roundhouse to avoid the Ken SA3 moment is just next-level matchup knowledge though. Absolutely absurd.

This guy rules.

I never played a lot of 3S, but I've watched a ton of it and seen him pop up a lot.

Don't think I ever saw him in physical form before this and I definitely appreciate him being a big goofball.

The second one is set to timestamp 6m12s, which is now being called "evo moment 38"
That was so hype. The 3s tournament this year was such a joy to watch

I used to be a Hugo player, so that was very satisfying to watch.

I wish I knew what I was looking at. I don't know 3S... is this like the guy who won Smash with Yoshi or something?

Hugo is my main and I'm glad he uses the Gigas Breaker too (which is mine). I'm not the best but I've been using him for years upon years. I can hold my own in most arcades and meet-ups and I even went on a small streak when I was in Japan recently. Glad to see he's been all the talk of EVO this year.

Hugo typically sits in the lower end of the middle of the 3S tier list, but the problem is that those top tiers are really damn good as are the people playing them, so pulling off wins with Hugo against top players isn't easy.

Hugo is a tough character to play. He's slow, has no projectile or much of any range control, and must get in close as he's a grappler.

The super that Hayao is using, the gigas breaker, is 720+punch. Being a 720 it's hard to input it without jumping, you need to "hide" the input inside something else like parry stun. Hayao can pretty much just pull off the gigas seemingly whenever he wants.

He's also just very well rounded with the character. Knowing exactly what move to use in many situations. I think in "moment 38" when he did the drop kick to go over Ken's super, I *think* that was luck (but maybe not). But knowing an ex lariat would reach Ken in time is just knowing the game and your character really well.

His loss to a Chun Li player knocked him out of the tournament. But it was a really close match, I think Hayao could have pulled it off. Very impressive considering Chun Li is widely considered top tier if not the best character in the game.

What everyone else said, plus those air-parries into a nail biting come from behind victory.

Dat drop kick into the clothesline= chef’s kiss!

Respectfully, any comparative analogy to the party game platformer Nintendautism-fueled BS has no place in this discussion.

lol No it does not.

That was mostly not luck. Like Justin mentions on commentary, Hugo's stand RH is absolutely worthless. It's a SHIT button that actually leaves you vulnerable even if you hit them. The only situation that top-level players ever use it (outside of an accident) is on your opponent's wakeup and only when they're incredibly low health as it beats low-parry OS techs and most crouching normals. It also makes Hugo airborne so Ken's SA3 and Chun's SA2 (two of the best supers in the game) will, at best, hit him once and he'll pop out of it, allowing for a punish. Obviously one hit from Ken's super would've killed him there so getting the timing/distance perfect was definitely a little luck but that is the exact situation where you'd use that button.

Hayao had already beaten a few Chuns along the way (including some ridiculously good ones) but Chi-Rithy is one of the best players in North America and that matchup is miserable for Hugo.

I only mentioned that because of someone taking a low tier player and doing very well with them. The 2 games are worlds apart. This was the dude with Yoshi...

Hugo has one of the best mix up games when fucking with opponents who are getting up from a knock down. I can keep most people guessing constantly. I've been watching the videos and his mix up is on another level. I think I may have learned some new techniques.

For those who care, Game Newton (an FGC-centric small arcade in Japan) did their annual 3rd Strike First to 10 invitational this weekend and Hayao was featured playing one of the best Akumas in the world, Uraken. Akuma is another miserable matchup for Hugo but Hayao plays it immaculately.

Never been a good grappler player, but I did like using Hugo, for some reason he was fun to me. Nowhere NEAR as good as Hayao, like not even in the same universe. But he was fun, and this dude is fun to watch both in the game and his goofball antics.

The level of PTSD Justin has when someone starts parrying his super is hilarious.
