I never liked the original games. Nice design and innovative for the time, but I couldn't get over how they just played like shit. Anniversary was the first game I actually enjoyed, and the reboot knocked it out of the park. Trying to play the original PS1 version emulated on a handheld in 2024 sounds painful to me.
I could see why those tank controls on a d-pad without analogue controls would be very stiff.

It has the same slanted A's from Alpha Mission. New SNK handheld confirmed!

So there are 3 main guesses for what the fuck Alpha is. it will be revealed next week.

1. could be Alpha as in alphabet or alphanumeric, meaning a console with an integrated or bundled keyboard. they're up to 6 home computer carts now with more on the way

2. tabletop arcade unit that takes Evercade carts, possibly with a way to rotate the screen to TATE mode

3. just a more powerful, next generation Evercade. possibly one that supports analog controllers. seems the least likely since they just revealed the R line

I am curious. And knowing them, it should be backwards compatible whatever the hell it is. But they really gotta level up the games if I'm gonna bite. It's been bargain bin for awhile now.

Atari VCS seems superior at this point 😂

They said when Evercade was brand new that their long term goal was to get to 50 cartridges. They've already released 57, I think they're just nearing the limit of what they can reasonably license. I'm mostly just in it for the indie carts.

Evercade announced today that they've sold over 1 million cartridges, with Tomb Raider being the fastest selling ever.

That averages to about 17,500 across 57 carts. Obviously stuff like Tomb Raider, Duke Nukem, and the pack-in titles did way more than that while the obscure stuff did way less, but there ya go.

Yeah, besides the built-in games I don't see how this is any better than just plugging an arcade stick into your VS.

I wouldn't even call it a bartop. It's more like one of those little stands with a built in stick for the Switch. The screen is only 8 inches.

In any case it's overpriced. The new handheld and home console are 100 bucks each, or under 60 for the super pockets, and they all play the same games. This thing is more than twice as much and the screen doesn't even rotate.

Big enough to stand out on a youtuber's backdrop, but not so big they have to build around it.

I'll give them props for putting all the fighting games on one unit and none on the other. But not too much since they all could've been on one unit.

the confusing part is it doesn't fill any consumer need. There are plenty of crooked teeth Evercade loyalists who think it's cool to put your cart(SD card) into a mini bartop...but nobody asked for this. At all.

It's just a gigantic miss to put so much emphasis on the TATE functionality for the EXP, to the point where they're bringing out a grip to make the device more comfortable in that format, and then release this bartop that doesn't let you swivel the display 90 degrees.

Even dumber than when they released that Atari Arcade cart with a bunch of analog control games (Centipede, Warlords, Pong, Millipede, Missile Command, Crystal Castles, Breakout, etc) on a device that only supports digital controls. God damn 7800 version of Centipede plays way better on Evercade because of this oversight.

To get the "deluxe" model with the Sanwa parts shipped from the UK it's about 344 bucks.

Absolutely fucking ludicrous. I wouldn't pay half that.

Isn't Midnight Resistance a rotary stick game? Hmm I suppose using the shoulder buttons would work.

This year's roadmap is being filled in strangely. We know the July cartridges (Tomb Raider and Thalamus) and hardware (Rs), and we know November's cartridges (Data East Arcade 2 and Toaplan Arcade 3) and hardware (Alpha). However, we don't know September's cartridges.

There is not a snowball's chance in hell, but I'd love to see MSX and SMS collections, now that both emulators have shown up on indie carts.

They've had an SMS emulator since the VS and EXP came out. Gotris, an SMS homebrew puzzle game, has been built into the system as a hidden game since then.

I would expect another Tomb Raider cart since the Eidos dude officially joined Blaze and they said that the Tomb Raider 1 cart was their best seller yet. They could do the PS1 versions of The Last Revelation and Chronicles, the GBA games Legacy and Prophecy, and the two GBC games.
