I’ll be holding out until the last of the gas is gone. I have a buddy with a Tesla, not impressed. Sure it’s quick, but lacks the characteristics and feel of driving an internal combustion engine vehicle.
Sure you’re not paying at the pump with an EV, but there’s stuff it many talk about, like $2k tires. My buddy was surprised when he went to get a new set.

Tech still isn't ready for mass adoption. Use specific cases where it makes some sense, but most people are paying a premium and thinking not paying for gas is saving them money.

Electric cars are for beardy weirdys who think they're saving the planet.
I still wouldn't rule out hydrogen and synthetic gasoline as the distant future for powertrains of choice.
Until then I'll stick with my 6.4 liter V8 and the wife's 3.6 liter V6.

I have a few friends with EV's. Some in the city and some in the burbs.
Once you get the quality issue sorted, they've been quite happy. They do the same road trips I do in the mid west.
I'd have an EV if my wiring could support it. my garage has wiring from a century ago.

I have several friends who have EVs (Teslas, Hyundai Ioniqs, a Lucid Air) and I'll likely get one for my next car. I'm under no delusion that I'm saving the planet. I'm just kind of in the right demographic for one: don't take a lot of long trips, have a lot of charging stations in my area, can easily install a level 2 charger in my garage and have no real strong attachment to how cars are "supposed" to feel/drive/etc. Plus I enjoy all the bells and whistles/tech nerd shit.
Fact of the matter is they've gotten cheap enough that unless you're buying a shitbox, traditional gas-guzzlers aren't any cheaper anymore and gas prices have become so volatile and stupid and don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Plug in Hybrid has been the bees knees.
Level 2 ChargePoint in the driveway was an easy install.
Has a KERS system so every time I slow down, I’m charging the battery on the fly.
Runs on gas too, so no fear of limitations or being stranded on a long trip.
We go months without filling up the gas tank. ~600 gas miles a fill up is pretty nice. Around town is strictly electric. It helps that both my wife and myself work 10 mins from home, and that there are chargers in every parking garage and supermarket parking lot in our town, and the greater Philadelphia area.

I did go back.
I used to have a shit daily commute (2.5ish hours for an 80 mile round trip) years ago and had a tesla till about '22. Tech was better than expected then (even better now) but the physical build quality and overall fit & finish was ass. The latter so much so, I ended up getting rid of it and leased a taycan.
That was basically the opposite experience of the tesla... great fit & finish and drive experience, the tech (including battery & other hardware) is/was lacking. In the span of 3 yrs I had it, it had no less than 15 recalls (no joke, google that shit)... fucking nightmare. It was at the dealer getting the recalls addressed so much, pcna cut me a check for the time lost in the shop. Crazy.
That all said, I quit the corporate slave to the grind thing a yr or two back and am primarily wfh now. Aside from the "whys" with all of that, the cost savings and other trade-offs that come with an EV wasn't worth it to me any more. So along with the other gas-only cars in the immediate fam, I replaced the EV with an all-gasser now. So my wife, me & the kids are gas only.
tl;dr = No regrets, suck it CA.

I've been running an EV for a couple of years now, I usually buy cars but this one I leased because I'm nervous of it being made obsolete during ownership with the tech advancing so quickly.
I charge it off a standard household plug socket pulling 10A, unless you're doing high miles I wouldn't bother spending the money on a specific EV charger.
Put normal tires on it. The EV specific tires are yet another bullshit ruse from the tire companies for the 'all my tires have to match' crew who point blank refuse to move on from their dad's 1960s origin advice.
They make you smile, a lot, off the lights, out of junctions, into roundabouts. You're getting motorbike tier acceleration for push bike prices.
Cheaper ones top out low. You'll often find them limited to 100mph, or maybe just geared to 100mph, either way I wouldn't take a cheap EV on the autobahn.
The tech is cool, but you're almost certainly going to get some kind of iPad shit to control everything, which sucks. Primary issue for me is because you can't physically feel a specific button to press you have to actually look at the screen. Doesn't feel safe to me at full speed, even if full speed isn't especially fast.
Alas, they're turning into yet another way to delineate the young from the old. We're a bit further along in Europe with EVs than America so we've been through all of the push back, and now it's just old people still moaning. Yes, someone who has just bought a brand new gas car is almost certainly not going to be worth eyeing up, unless you're into hearing aids and have started to appreciate grapefruit.

Jaecoo have turned up here and are instantly amongst the best selling cars. It's very difficult to argue with the spec, they're a third of the price of an equivalent euro marque. Unless they start to malfunction, a lot, quickly, the rest of the world's car industries are fucked. I don't like it one bit btw.

I've had the cheap BYD Seal ("Dynamic") for about 18 months. No real complaints other than the tinted rear-view mirror sucks at night.
It's not a particularly fast car, but you can drive like an absolute maniac and it doesn't make a fuss. Plus I charge it from my solar panels.

Still on the fence about them. I'm considering buying a Tesla Model 3 soon but I still have a lot of reservations. There are a lot of EVs on the road around town and we have a surprising amount of charging stations for a small city AND electricity is cheap here.
Repairs and maintenance are what's holding me back. Like Chief said tires are expensive and apparently they wear out faster too. It used to be true that once the battery goes out you might as well buy a whole new car, but they have gotten cheaper to replace in recent years and last longer before needing replaced. It's still a significant amount of money however. There's also the fact that Teslas are basically just computers on wheels and I don't trust like that. Computers are dum n ghey.
I'd prefer a hydrogen car but to my knowledge that infrastructure only exists in California here in the US and it's sparse there still.
