Kind of a shot in the dark since this is such a niche series, but I love these games enough where I wanted to make a thread about them.
I'm honestly not even a big RPG player these days, but there is something about the simplistically pure and brutally difficult gameplay that strikes a chord with me.
The games give you almost no information about how to play and you're basically on your own to figure your own shit out unless you read a guide (which is honestly kind of a must for the earlier entries as some party comps are just straight up be doomed.) They become a little (only a little...) more forgiving from IV on and the two fully-fleshed story-based Untold entries, but you can still wipe easily to even random encounter mobs if you're caught slacking.
The graphics have never been their selling point, but they are certainly solid enough where that won't be a mark against them. I think the anime art style might turn some folks off, but I'm all for it and have no issue at all. The dungeon designs, enemies, and overall aesthetics are quite appealling and varied/unique enough to pull someone in based on that.
It has some seriously underrated music if you ask me; I've listened to the entire tracks for all the games and there are plenty of bangers and memorable pieces that run the gamut in terms of tone.
The biggest issue is that they are kind pricey as I don't think they ever released in big numbers and the fans are rabid to the point where they don't sell their copies so I don't think there's too many copies floating around--they're not rare or anything, but still definitely cost more than I'd like. I'd normally just say fuck it and emulate them, but they honestly are perfectly suited to handhelds with a touchscreen, so while you wouldn't lose much from not having that, I do think you'd lose enough.
I've been playing part IV recently and realized this might be a favorite series of mine as I've played through most of them and can easily see myself doing them all over again and having just as much fun.
Anyway, that was just kind of something I needed to nerd out about for a moment.
