What say you neo fans?

My Personal observation is that the title was easily speculated upon by fans throwing up possible names.

I like it. And the "symmetry" between Return of the Jedi is Cool as well. Remember... ROTJ was originally called Revenge of the Jedi, but Lucas decided that Jedis would not take "revenge." The sith on the other hand are a different matter.

I'm really looking forward to this "darker" Star Wars Film, even if it is a prequel I will undoubtedly see it the day it comes out... Hey who cares if its going to be PG... PG can be good.

I agree with you there - I thought ESB was easily the best film of the three, even though I may have enjoyed watching ROTJ a little more as a kid.

I'm looking forward to this film in particular because there's so much stuff that they have to tie together with episode IV, and I'm interested to see how well they'll pull it off.

On the not-so-bright side, I'm still furious will Lucas' half-queer ass about not releasing the original trilogy - what a load of crap. :blow_top:

meh. darker=better, but he will screw it up as he has done with all the other 5. The greed and stupidity of Lucas never fails to astound me.

*sigh*

As a Star Wars fan since childhood, this is quite a bittersweet pill.
I still can't figure out whether the old movies were genuinely better, or whether viewing them with the prism of nostalgia makes them seem so much better than the new ones. I for one definitely prefer the visual sensibilities of the OG flicks.
Ralph McQuarrie's art was so fucking good, and really helped shape the look of the classic trilogy.

Episode I was an unmitigated disaster. I still cannot figure out why the events in that movie were so important. If Lucas had an ounce of flair for modern storytelling techniques, you know, things like flashbacks or creative use of expository dialogue, he could have told all of that shit in 15 minutes and then went on with the show. His directorial style is completely stuck in ancient Hollywood...all close-ups from the neck up, uber-bland dialogue, so little visual flair or kinetics when dealing with humans, it just makes you wonder if he ever watches anyone else's films.

Episode II was a massive jump back in the right direction, with some very entertaining scenes despite the really shitty dialogue. It just felt a lot more like an actual Star Wars movie, unlike the made-for-TV drama Episode I came off as.

So, the last curtain call for a generation of dorks. I really hope that by some miracle, Lucas can do the series some justice and end it with a real bang. Many will love or hate it no matter what shows up on the big screen, but I hope it turns out well and that most fans enjoy it. The name of it really seems to be a massive kowtow to the wishes of the fanbase, and if the film follows suit, it should be a good time. Everyone just wants to see a newly minted Darth Vader.

The Empire Strikes Back > the rest of the saga.

Exactly. ESB is the SW movie i've seen the most. Heh it was also the most aired-on-tv movie too. I also preferred ROTJ as a kid but now I just can't dig it. I do like how Vader just seems to get a little more pissed off with each movie though.

Seeing more Sith stuff has me excited too, esp if the whole film will be 'dark' in nature. It'll be a blockbuster. Last SW film, probably ever... just as long as they don't take out the fatalities at the end i'll be happy. :tickled:

I have to say I like the prequals, albiet not half as much as the original trilogy.

Out of the Original Trilogy, ESB is clearly the better movie, more plot advancements than any of the others but for me the best duel has to be at the end of ROTJ. It just goes so well with John Williams score ("the dark side bekons", "emperors theme", classics).

Ps I made the same thread over at snk-capcom.com as soon as the news broke but I immediatly got shot down and the thread closed, for no other reason that it wasnt in some stupid movie thread that had disappeared a long time ago. Guess we know which site has byfar the better forums.

Well if the formula is right then this will be as good if not better than AOTC.

From what I have seen it looks awesome.

Episode 3 will of course be better then episode 1 but only because episode 1 was the worst thing that ever happened to the SW franchise. It honestly just cant get worse then Ep1.

Episode 2 was okay.

And well as for episode 3 im going to see it...intoxicated. I have a strong dislike for georgey boy lucas these days. I hope in true science fiction fashion that george lucas was actually abducted by aliens areound 10 years ago and replaced with a maniacal clone whose one and only goal was to ruin the childhood memories of thousands of star wars geeks across the globe.

We have no one but ourselves to blame for the current generation of Star Wars films being so shitty. Phantom Menace took in 431 million at the box office and Attack of the Clones grossed 310 million. We all knew these movies were going to suck but we went to theaters in droves and paid up the ass to see them anyway.

That being said, I have high hopes for Episode 3. It looks like it's going to be the darkest Star Wars film yet. I really want to see how Skywalker and the Emperor take out all the Jedi.

I also hope that the Stars Wars saga does continue. They should turn creative control over to the people who created Knights of the Old Republic for episodes 7-9. Bioware did such a great job with the storyline in that game. It felt more like Stars Wars than either of the current films.

The emperor has his own lightsaber (one of the starwars.com hyperspace pics showed it) in this film. So hes gonna be dueling someone, rumor has it that he could be taking on yoda. That should be cool.

Blah blah blah, the new movies suck, blah blah blah. The original trilogy were children's films, these are children's films. If you can't enjoy them, it's more your fault than theirs. The money they've brought in is proof that they still work pretty well with kids. Bad dialogue? Yes, but there was plenty of that to go around in the originals as well. Watch Jedi objectively; it's almost a parody of the first two. Harrison Ford barely disguises his contempt for some of the dialogue he's forced to utter. Do I like the new movies as much as the originals? No, but I'm not 7 anymore.

I can't wait for Episode 3 to be released, come to dvd, and be forgotten, so I don't have to hear any more of the complaining. To those anticipating a "darker" Episode 3, keep in mind that it will be "dark" for a children's movie, not "dark" for a 20 or 30-something used to going to R rated movies without supervision. Don't get your expectations too high.

For better or worse, this is Lucas' vision for his own creation. If you don't like the direction the story's taken, get off your ass and create your own characters and story, in whatever format is available to you. Obviously, a movie is out for most of us, but write a book or something. Maybe pitch a cartoon to CN or the WB. They're always looking for something new.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I loved all the Star Wars movies (though I don't like Jar Jar =P) and I'm looking forward to this one. :buttrock:

Well said.

Something else everyone is forgetting is that the original Star Wars films actually did pretty horribly back when they originally released. IN fact, Empire Strikes back was considered one of the worst movies of it's time. Man, I still remember how people on the news were just ripping it apart.

So, the way I see it, history is just repeating itself.

Psh, the only reason Ep III is getting an R rating is because we're gonna see Hayden Christensen turn into a coco puff when he falls into the liquid hot MAG-MA! /Dr. Evil voice

But really though, Ep I & II were not all that bad. I'll take them both over the Matrix sequels any day of the week. Personally, I can't wait for Ep III. Oop, time for anothe MN roll call! :loco: ...in about...ten months...

Rated R? I didn't see that anywhere...where did you hear it? I'd be downright shocked if this got anything higher than a PG-13. He's pulled some block-headed moves, but I doubt Lucas would cut 80% of his audience from seeing his movie.

I thought these were both interesting arguments that I completely disagree with, and here's why:

This makes assumption that there's only one way to make a children's movie.

I don't think you fully realize what Lucas was doing when he first made the Star Wars series (and I'm not pulling this out of my ass): He wanted to make something that rivaled the classic serials from his own childhood, the "Flash Gordons" and the similar B&W classics that people used to watch at matinees. Yes, to an extent, these were kids films -but they were much more comic book like than the other style of "children's movies" we ended up getting hints of in ROTJ.

The first two movies were very similar to the sci-fi serials, never getting to cutesy and instead going for the high-action, good vs. evil, adventure model. As you point out, in ROTJ the series starts to take a turn for the more "Sesame Street" style of children's movie (complete with Muppets). From all the script tweaks (Revenge to Return; Wookies to Ewoks; the destruction of the Falcon) it became clear that Lucas started to look at the series less as Sci-Fi serial and more like the Childrens movies we saw in Eps 1 and 2.

Sadly, we don't really see many movies in that old sci-fi serial style (although you could turn to Anime movies like "Princess Monoke"). Instead we see movies like "Spy Kids" that mimic the same style of Children's movie that the new Star Wars movies have become.

Is this particular sub-genre of children's movie worse than the other? No. However, it really throws off a lot of fans because it doesn't mesh with how the earlier two movies were made... That's a big reason why I don't enjoy the new movies as such.

For the record, I've shown the original movies to several people who'd never seen them before (and after they'd seen Episode 1 and 2), and they immediately noticed a difference in quality. To say that "we like them more because we saw them as kids" is complete bunk.

What? Where are you getting this stuff from?

Star Wars: Nominated for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Writing (and a bunch of others)
ESB: Show me the bad reviews. I'm not talking about "Anchorman"-style newscasters. Show me the proof that fans didn't like it (their dollar take disproves that outright), show me the proof that critics didn't like it.
Return of the Jedi: No arguments on this one. I had problems -it was the first clear warning that Lucas was aiming squarly at kids (his own probably had something to do with this).

As a second note: the horrid "Special Editions" only proved that Lucas' taste and desires had got really tacky in the years in between.

I think the main problem of the new ones is simply lack of focus. In the first trilogy we are introduced to a young man with dreams of being a pilot, and by the end of the third movie he becomes the savior of the galaxy. All the while Luke is following the traditional path of the hero as laid out by Joseph Campbell. However in the new movies we are faced with a lack of a true hero. Added to the fact that he is just not a strong and well written character. Some can say it's Anakin, but we know in the end he is not a hero and will turn on everyone. Others can say it's Obi-wan but there is a clear lack of focus on him in the Ep 1, rather it's on Qui-Gon. In the case of Ep 2 it seems to follow Anakin more.

Amen, Bobak.

You don't have to be 'kiddie' to make something that appeals to kids and adults.
The first SW trilogy was NOT something specifically aimed at children.
Take a look at Episode IV...there's all kinds of adult 'stuff' going on.
That Rebel ship at the beginning gets raided, Rebel scum gets smoked like a ham, and Darth Vader chokes a man with his bare goddamn hands. This is in the first fifteen minutes. Later on we see Ponda Baba lose an arm in the cantina, a cute Princess being threatened with an ominous-looking torture droid with a syringe...do I have to keep going?

NO ONE ever thought of those movies as 'children's fare' until Lucas trotted out that weak shit as an excuse for Episode I. They were simply regarded as pop-sci-fi everyone loved. It's a totally revisionist argument that doesn't hold up.

I wouldn't say ROTJ was entirely for children. We all remember Leia in her bikini, and apparently almost becoming a sex slave for Jabba.

The first Star Wars grossed 322 million during its initial run in theaters. That doesn't include the 138 million the special edition pulled in. Empire also did fairly well too; it grossed around 222 million. Jedi did a little bit better than Empire with 263 million. Keep in mind that this was when ticket prices were quite a bit cheaper.

Dude, you have no clue what you're talking about and your shit is all fucked up. Now go back to playing Silent Hill and jamming on your guitar you goddamned hippie. :multi_co:

Regardless of sales and such, the general majority of folks who saw the films found them to be less than intresting back when they first came out. While fans loved it, casual movie goers called the film "Lackluster" and "Shallow with a thin line between grade school and community theater acting".

The Empire Strikes Back garnered more critisism, called "One of the worst endings in movies" during it's release. It wasn't till the first re-release back in the 80's that the films gained the respect they deserved, and a good thing they did. Today the original films are hailed as the finest in science fiction film.

It just goes to show what a few years can do.

Of course there's nothing concrete about a possible R rating. Just rumors, treat it as such. But a guy can wish, can't he?
