It's time for the custom firmware now.
This can't be stressed enough.
I modded my 3DS a year or so ago for the sole purpose of playing the third 3D Sega Ages collection that never left Japan. Beyond that game I've pretty much already purchased every title on the console that I was interested in, so piracy wasn't a big motivation for me to mod it. I'll tell you though, being able to dump every one of my carts (along with their save files) and have everything installed to a single SD card is incredibly convenient. If you play your 3DS any at all that reason alone is worth the trouble of installing CFW.
About a month ago I modded my Wii U. I hadn't paid attention to the Wii U scene in quite some time. The last time I looked years ago all you could do is mod the virtual Wii side, which wasn't a big deal to me since I already own a couple modded Wii's.
I gotta say though I was completely floored by what all you can do with it now. I was able to dump all my discs to an external HDD (including regular Wii discs), play Gamecube games from the SD card, play Wii games that just use a regular controller with the Gamepad (along with GC/N64/Retroarch on the gamepad as well).
Probably the coolest thing to me is being able to use the Wii U Pro Controller with Wii homebrew. I'm able to play Open BOR, N64, and Gamecube games with the Wii U Pro Controller, all booted straight from the Wii U homescreen without touching a Wiimote. There's even got the option to use any Bluetooth controller on that portion, so you can use PS3/4, Xbox, Switch Joycons....whatever. Really fantastic stuff. Gamecube Capcom VS SNK 2 played on my Wii U looks much better than the digital PS2 version played on my PS3. I've played this system more in the past month than I have in the past three years combined.
I do plan on trying out those 3D Sega Ages games since I never bought them before.
They're absolutely fantastic games, I can't recommend them enough. Even the little shitty ports of the 3D SMS games thrown in as extras are done extremely well. I bought a 3DS just for these games when Sega first announced they were releasing them on the eShop in the US, and I've not regretted that purchase at all. Galaxy Force and Space Harrier have probably the best implementation of the 3D effect that I've seen on the console.
