Speaking of Gradius III, I noticed that my SNES copy plays differently from the Playstation 2 copy. I wonder which one is closer to the arcade version.
SNES version is definitely an altered version of arcade Gradius III, like Super R-Type is an altered R-Type II.
The PS2 version is the arcade port; it even allows you to keep the slowdown or remove it.
The high speed maze stage is definitely in PS2's Gradius III, it is a staple of the series...you haven't beaten the game yet.
