It's a Sync Strike which conveniently strips sync and breaks out SCART into VGA and RCA connectors.

Any thoughts on a CRT that's been out in light rain for a few hours? It doesn't look soaked but I haven't opened it. I was planning on letting it dry for a few days.

Anyone have experience with a wet crt?

Let it dry. I've washed arcade monitors before and they were fine after they dried out for a couple of days in the sun.

I'd let it dry and maybe take some compressed air to it. Water might hide in some cracks and crevices. If you have an oven like Olli put it on the lowest setting.

Alrighty... here's my two babies so far.

Sony PVM-20L2MD - medical facility auction, definitely not brand new lol. June 2004 manufacture date.
ULTRAK KM1900CN - Brand new in box, all still sealed. July 2001 manufacture date.

If I find something better in the 20" category, and affordable lol, I'll do something there, but for now I'm content.

Now my search for a 24", and maybe a 14".

These are both sitting on stock factory settings right now. I do need to do a few adjustments. Pictures don't do it justice, and these are both on composite PS2 right now. I'll get some component pics tomorrow when I can grab some cables lol.

I'd get one if it had the scart video and audio voltage standards standard printed on it, I needs to keep my voltages stable.

I know there have been mentions of things like the above in this thread, but are these mods becoming more common place now? Can anyone comment on what goes into such a mod and what the results are like? I was surprised to see this.

Wouldn't it also just be cheaper to buy one of those scart to component cables to use on a crt anyways?

If you can do the mod yourself the bill of materials is really cheap (Warning this is not a beginner mod it is dangerous working on a crt and you should know how to discharge the tube). You have to add wires for RGB directly to the chip that usually has the on screen menu. Not all sets can be modded for RGB so you need to look into the service manual to read if the set will work. On the two sets that I did they did not have component. One only had composite and another had only s-video. This mod is very good for sets that did not have component.

As far as how good the mod is. Let's just say that I used to game on my 20m2u 20" pvm and now I use the 27" trinition that I modded for RGB. To me the picture is really close to the pvm and the increase in size of the picture is well worth using it over the pvm. It looks like a really good arcade monitor and for me that is good enough.

Charging $250 for a set modded like that is insane. I have not tried modding any of my CRTs that have component. It's on my list of things to do but I been pretty happy with the Sony I did. The model number is kv-27S42.

Most definitely 1,000% easier and cheaper than buying a $250 TV like you linked to. ShinyBow SB-2840 is an excellent RGB to YPbPr/Component converter and costs $75.

Despite misleading videos we're been seeing pretty frequently lately (like "$20 RGB modded consumer TV blows away BVM in picture quality"), YPbPr is capable of just as good image quality as RGB, so IMO there's really no need to RGB mod a TV like this which has YPbPr/Component inputs unless you simply like to tinker (then more power to you).

I see mods like this only being good if you're looking for an old-school curved-screen, which means that type of TV which most likely doesn't have Component inputs, and that seems to be where a RGB mod like this can really shine.

Just wanted to share a little experience I made and posted on a french forum a while ago. Why frenchie you may ask? :) Well... it's the only gaming related site besides Arcade Otaku that isn't blocked yet at my job ^^

So.. here we go. I don't have the fanciest phone for taking CRT pictures (and neither I will...). But I tried to take the best same picture at the same position.

I will number the monitors but won't reveal the tube/chassis names yet. First, I wanna know your preferences by order. Later on, I'll tell what monitores they are!

Monitor A

Monitor B

Monitor C

Monitor D

Monitor E

The test involved 5 different tube. 3x 29" 1x 28" and a smaller 20".

To me, it should naturally go as B-A-C-D-E.

I can only see B,C, and E. Of those B looks the nicest to me. It seems to have the most prominent scanlines.

Quick question - I have a jvc 1400pn, (curved screen) which looks lovely, but I have noticed scanlines fade in the corners of the screen. Lovely and sharp everywhere else. Normal or an issue?

If by fade you mean the picture itself is a bit softer and as such the black lines disappear a bit, yes that's normal.

All CRTs are going to be softer at the edges and especially the corners than in the middle/center.

Grabbed a Sony KV-27FV310 today. It looks NICE! It was brand new, still in the box, sealed. It's perfect.

E is the only tube with a slot-type shadow mask, i.e. what is used in arcade monitors and (non Sony) consumer TVs. It's what I will always prefer for 15KHz (not that I like your picture particularly). The other ones look like professional monitors or PC monitors (fine pitch aperture grille and/or circular hole shadow mask).

Got a Toshiba CF36H40 that I plan to get RGB modded by a guy I know soon. Haven't tested the TV yet, but I assume it works. Gonna be a bitch lifting it into my GMC though..

25436262_1769500086396430_538842115_n.jpg

Has s-video and two composite inputs, as well as AV out so I can hook it up to my stereo.

Also got the Scart socket for the mod the other day.

I'll try this again. I have a Panasonic Tau, it's a 36 incher I think, free to anyone that wants it. I will NOT help you move it. You'll need at least 3 guys to move it. No tire kickers cause it's free. I'm in South Carolina near Charlotte. Come get this thing out of my house. And no, I'm not going to take a bunch of pictures of it. It has A/V in and out, and S-video and component. Seriously. It's free. And don't ask for pics with it on. I'm not filming CRT porn here.

Since I like your input on this matter, I will go ahead and reveal what they are.

Actually, E is my worst monitor/chassis. It's a Samsung 29" tube with a Sanwa PM1745 chassis. Live, the picture is horrendous next to the others.

A is a beauty 28" inch'er from Intervideo. I really love those THICK scanlines. I do not hold the manual of it, all I know is that it takes 15Khz and 31Khz. It has a single button/pot for OSD geometry adjustments. The picture only falls 2nd on my top of choices.

B is a 29" PVM2950QM. It is a professional monitor. Nothing much to say appart that it kicks major ass.

C is a Nanao MS9. Possibly the best one in the geometry-wise department. I still prefer the strong, popping vivid colors of the intervideo tho.

D is an Hantarex Polo 20". It looks muuuuuuuuch better live. There is no such thing as heavily pronounced scanlines, but they're there. The colors live, are as vibrant as the bigger Intervideo above. Gotta love those italian monitors :buttrock:

I just added another 29" incher Sony 4:3 Flat trinitron to my gaming spot. Sadly, it has the weakest picture of all. But for what it cost me, I can't complain. Still have to work on the convergence of that beast.:annoyed:
