Okay, I need a help-me thread, as I just got Jason's Naomi Universal cab, and it's pretty sweet but I definitely need some basic help....

First question - it looks like there are two USB cables that plug into the board in the Control panel, based on the pictures I saw in the first place.... though I only see room for one USB cable to plug in on the Naomi mobo. What am I missin here?

Second - got an error message " Error. Jamma I/O board not found" - I'm assuming this is because it had been hooked up in a JAMMA cab with a Capcom I/O, and is now in a JVS cab - do I have to flip a DIP to change over from JAMMA to JVS or what?

Thanks

Collin

When I tore down my latest uni to chop it, I remember seeing an extra usb cable not plugged to anything. My assumption is this is for extra hardware, like gun boards or something. May seem pretty obvious, but make sure you have the right usb cable plugged into the I/O. The mobo doesn't differentiate between different brands and styles of I/O boards (AFAIK). Only dip I ever worry about is the 15/31K depending what cab I stick it in.

Wow, a NAOMI Universal?

On the NAOMI itself there is only one USB connection. That is your JVS connection to the cabinet.

You don't need the IO board anymore in a JVS cabinet.

The board in the control panel is an "I/O board". :annoyed:

So remove that and put the Capcom IO in there. Connect the NAOMI to the Capcom IO as you normally would. The Capcom IO needs to be powered.

What the Fuck are you talking about? The cab is wired JVS. A Capcom I/O is for cabs wired JAMMA.

In other words collin, please ignore anymore posts in this thread by one supasaru.

I guess I misunderstood that as he still wanted to use his Capcom IO for some reason. That's all.

Now that I think about it, the spare cable I think I saw was the maple I/O ends (these are basically stripped dreamcast controller cables with mole connectors on the ends)

You should be able to take a Naomi mobo from a Capcom IO over to a uni cab without changing anything but dip 1 for monitor resolution.

Try a different usb cable, try a different mobo. If those don't work your sega IO may be bad.

Awesome, thanks for the info!

Have you ever used a Capcom I/O by chance? If so, were you able switch a mobo from a JVS cab to using a Capcom IO in a JAMMA cab without having to change anything other than the sync/resolution DIP?

*edit* posted this before your last post had appeared - Sounds like in theory I shouldn't be having these issues, though. I do need to figure out how the 4- and 5- pin Molex connectors connect to the I/O board - it looks like there are two places each could go.

Yes, I do it all the time with my Naomi 2. Read my post above.

Lol, sounds like your power leads to the IO aren't plugged in. Makes sense why you're getting an error.

Did you unwire this cab or something?

Just bought it from a buddy, and another friend transported it down here and brought a cab back home for himself....... it came to me in pieces, though it was whole and running with an Xbox 360 in it a few days ago. It's been years since it has had a Naomi run in it, though.

The mobo was hooked up with a Capcom I/O in its previous application.

I've got a lot of variables and uncertainties,

Okay, you may be encountering the same issue I had when putting a naomi setup in my blast city.

The jvs i/o board needs power since it does not have a jamma edge on it to receive power via the jamma harness. So what you need to do is provide power to the jvs i/o board. It needs 5v. The easiest way to do that is to make a power cable. Its fairly simple. Using the picture that Sup provided. There is a 4 prong lead on the naomi filterboard that produces the needed 5v. Its located near the top right of the filter board. You will tap the power there and then go to the input 5v connector on the jvs i/o. The input power connector is the one labled is Sup's picture.

A common misconception is that power is delivered to the jvs i/o over the usb cable. The usb cable is strictly for communication no power is delivered. I can get you a picture of my setup tonight. Once you see my picture, it will be a cakewalk.

Thanks a ton for the help!
I do have one 4-prong molex connector and one 5-prong going to the board but have been told the lower left one is hooked up incorrectly - I plan to change that tonight.

If you do get a picture detailing all the connections made to yours tonight, that would be aweome!

The picture I posted shows the pin and what voltages should be on them...

You could test with a multimeter. Or just use your Capcom IO unless you plan to sell that. Regardless of what SamuraiShodownSensei seems to be so angry about, people often do use the Capcom IO in all sorts of cabinets for a few reasons, including:

1) The wiring is cleaner
2) JAMMA is easy to rig up (left side edge before the key is power - easy peasey).
3) The power requirement is supposed to be lower for the Capcom IO than the audio amp+Sega IO
4) If you didn't figure it out from 3 - the Capcom IO has a built in Audio Amp.
5) Capcom games are easier to wire with an existing kick harness
6) Capcom IO's are easier to find and replace than the Sega non-JAMMA JVS.
<etc>

I personally use the Sega IO over the Capcom IO, but to each their own. The games I want to play only have 5 buttons and I can easily interchange my 246, Atomiswave and NAOMI when using the Sega IO.

JVS is tops when you understand and use it properly.

The whole IO portion of JVS as well is far better rigged (when using an actual JVS IO PCB, not a JVS->Jamma PCB). It also makes for easy CP swapping for custom devices.

Just my opinion.

In the little bit, I've dealt with JVS and its only been with the naomi so far. Its alot cleaner, given I'm working in a blast city cab using sega equipment.

I agree with subbie. Jamma was perfect until Street Fighter 2 hit the arcades then everything became a cluster fuck because games needed more than 3 buttons and every company had a different means of addressing that.

Just the idea of rewiring a Naomi uni to jamma is absolutely retarded. Namco made a jamma to JVS converter anyway. Get another cheaper cab if you wanted a jamma setup. And considering the uni DOES NOT COME with a tri sync chassis standard. It would be completely useless for normal jamma games without a video converter.

I'm annoyed because you're a spamming tard who feels the need to insert himself into threads with posts that make absolutely no sense. This thread is a perfect example.

Dude calm down. There's no need to go off on Supasaru. I've met the guy in person and he's a stand up guy. He is just trying to help out.

Lets get back to getting mmsadda the help he needs to get this working.

Meh, no worries.

Between whatever carwreck was introduced to this thread, I think it has the information mmsada may need and probably more.

He's got the pinouts for the JVS card (which everyone agreed was a much better solution) and he has the reasoning that people use the Capcom IO if he needs to use that because he can't get the Sega IO working or decides to toss the old NAOMI audio amp.

The thing that I think is getting lost is uh... there's NO NEED to rewire the Universal to JAMMA to use a Capcom IO (and that would quite literally be retarded). It would also quite literally be exceptionally fucking retarded to even think that you would be running the NAOMI video through the JAMMA edge. It would be compoundedly exponentionally fucking retarded to go on ranting about how dumb of a solution it is before you actually thought through the solution.

All you're using the IO for is a JVS endpoint and an audio amp. Lots of people do it for the reasons I've listed and much more. Completely viable solution if he either can't get his Sega JVS working or it's toast.

You'd have to rewire the entire control panel to the jamma edge to make the cabinet functional (which in effect would BE WIRING THE CABINET JAMMA). Please stop bringing up the Capcom IO. It is NOT a solution in this case. I'm not even sure why you feel the need putting your 2 cents in because it's obvious to me you aren't familiar with the cab in question.

Edit: and I'm well aware you bypass the Capcom IO when using a 31k monitor, idiot. I have 2 trisynched impresses I use Naomi hardware in. If you read my previous post I mentioned NORMAL JAMMA GAMES.

I'm tired of this stupid debate, so I'll sum it up. You can't just "put in the Capcom IO" like supasaru suggests, you would need to do the following which in effect would be wiring the cab JAMMA.

- Route power from PSU to appropriate pins on jamma connector.
- route joysticks and main 6 buttons both starts etc.. to jamma connector (if I had to do this I would get the same size molex connectors the cab uses on the cp and make separate connectors instead of cutting into the cabs JVS button harness)
-buy a cps2 kick harness wire it up to remaining buttons
- remove sega audio amp rewire speakers to RCA connectors on Capcom IO
- If you wanted to use normal pcbs, you'd also have to wire speakers to jamma edge, preferably through a pot and set up a switchable setup dual mono/stereo changeover. See Capcom impress for example of this.
- if the cab will be used for Naomi only, no video connections on jamma edge are necessary.
- if you want to use 15k pcbs, you will need to install a trisync chassis or buy a video converter (CGA 2 vga) from jamma boards.com and wire jamma connector video pins.

You can't plug a Naomi to a Capcom IO to a namco jamma to JVS converter (installed in cyberleads) to the cab without a working cab IO (this arrangement is beyond stupid anyway)

After all that you might have well of sold the damn thing, bought a standard jamma candy.

So much animosity. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to understand the process. I did misunderstand his original post and thought he wanted to use the Capcom IO to begin with - that's where the whole thing stemmed from with you flipping out. My mistake.

There's no need to go nuts about it - you can and people do replace the Sega IO with the Capcom one even in new JVS cabs. Never said it was right - but people do it.

Now we're at the point where you're going to rationalize your kneejerk 'roid raged reactions and I'm not interested in that. I think the thread served it's purpose (hopefully - or Collin died in the process which would be sadface).

See you around! :)

Okay, here are my connections to the mobo and I/O:

How does this look? Any noteworthy issues?

Also, in standard applications, should all 4 mobo dip switches be down?
