I've been watching clips of Megadeth's upcoming DVD, Blood in the water, on youtube and I am amazed by Chris Broderick's playing. For the first time in years Megadeth sounds like Megadeth again.

I grew up on the RIP era line up (Mustaine, Friedman, Ellefson, Menza,) and Marty's use of exotic scales in his solos really grabbed my attention. Poland and Young were good but Marty helped to really push the band to the next level. After Marty left everything kind of spiraled down. Al Pitrelli is a great player no doubt but he just didn't seem to compliment Dave's playing well. Glen Drover was awful. I heard him ruin just about every Friedman era solo time and time again. I don't know what Mustaine saw in him. After all that we finally have a guitarist in the fold that very much has that Marty Friedman feel on top of his own amazing abilities.

Fuck me, I'm rambling now. Point is this; with Chris in the band it sounds like Megadeth again. I can't wait to hear the new album.

Enjoy Blood In The Water (the track list is all out of order):
1: Sleepwalker
2: Wake Up Dead
3: Take No Prisoners
4: Burnt Ice
5: A Tout Le Mond
6: Ashes In Your Mouth
7: Holy Wars
8: Skin O' My Teeth
9: Washington Is Next
10: Kick The Chair
11: In My Darkest Hour
12: Tornado Of Souls
13: Symphony Of Destruction
14: Trust
15: Peace Sells

Thats the guy from Jag Panzer right? I read about his acquisition by Megadeth months and months ago. Glad to see this is all finally coming around. Megadeth was at one time my favorite metal band, and to some extent is still probably in my top 3 favorites.

Jag Panzer had a couple really tight albums. I liked, in particular, Thane To The Throne, as I like heavily themed concept albums, which is why I like Iced Earth a lot as well.

Anyway thanks for the heads up, I hadn't been keeping up with Megadeth for awhile. Last I knew Mustaine said the Megadeth name was retired. Looks like he wised up and realized he wouldn't sell any albums under a different name. I don't think many people remember MD 45.

I gotta check out the new stuff. After Marty left so did I. So Chris is filling the shoes or better?

Broderick = power

Friedman > the world :vik: ( not considering his Japan work, which is completely hilarious for a guitar god as he is. )

Dave has been begging Chris to come back for years....

Hmmm...

I guess I perfer to judge studio material, but this guy at least sounds competent. And yeah- didn't have too much faith in the act after Marty and the rest left, and Mustaine found fundamentalist Christianity.

Oh, and tangentially, this is the best thing I've read concerning Megadeth in the past decade:

Yes friends, the last decade.

United Abominations is the best album Megadeth has put out since Countdown in '92. Youthanasia ('94) through The System Has Failed ('04) really felt like a different band all together. Dave was hell bent on making mainstream breakthroughs so he shortened the songs, simplified the structures and took out most if not all the snarl and venom that made Megadeth Megadeth. Each album had a few good tracks but for the most part it was bland desperation.

Broderick is a great fit for the band because he brings that classical/exotic skill set that Marty had but he also brings in his own distinct flavor, something that none of the post-Friedman guitarists had done.

There are a few things that worry me about the current lineup: 1) Mustaine likes to work primarily in minor and, like Friedman, Chris likes to branch out and try new things. Dave could end up strangling all the creative freedom away from Chris in quick order. 2) Mustaine is a giant, egotistical prick. Great player but a giant douche otherwise. Given those two factors I don't know how long this incarnation is going to survive but I'm going to enjoy it while its here.

norton9478: Poland was the 2nd guitarist on 2004s The System Has Failed. He put in some solid work but, for me, that album was too much radio friendly 'Deth and not enough actual 'Deth.

Poland is amazing but I was always more a Freidman/RIP era fan.

Wow, it's random to see this post, I was just rocking out to some A Tout Le Monde on the way home from work about an hour ago. Megadeth is my favorite metal act of all time, but as many others have already said, after Marty Friedman left the band things didn't seem right. In my opinion, they haven't released a standout album since Cryptic Writings.

Broderick sounds like he has a handle on things though, if he can match Marty's energy I'll definitely make it a point to try to find them on their next tour.

Well, on that note time to fire up some Rust in Peace and Youthanasia. :buttrock:

Sorry for the double post. I just realized Risk is just a two months shy of being a decade old. Fuck I'm out of touch, it feels like I picked that up just a couple years ago.

Chris Poland is still my favorite.

The first 2 albums are good but they just feel disjointed to me. I could never totally get into them. The lack luster production didn't help much either.

I think the lackluster production gave it part of it's charm. There's remasters of those old albums, and they sound WAY different than the originals. You should give 'em a listen if you haven't yet. Killing is my business sounds listenable with it remastered and all that reverb taken out.

I did pick up the remastered RIP and that made a world of difference. I'll have to track down the first 3 remasters and give them another chance.

Forgot to mention this: Megadeth and Slayer will be touring Canada with Suicide Silence and Machine Head on the Canadian Carnage tour June 24th through June 29th. So, if you happen to be in or live in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary or Winnipeg then check it out 'cause its been 15 years since Megadeth and Slayer have shared the stage.

Coming from you, I'd say you gotta be kidding me !!!!

PS: you have a mail from me.

Technically he may be inferior to Marty, but I felt Poland's style went better with Megadeth. I prefer to hear Marty in his solo stuff and Cacophony, but I won't deny his stuff in Megadeth was awesome as well. I just prefer Poland in the 'deth lineup.

It's ok, Devil's Island is still awesome in my book even having more than 90% of Mustaine touch on it. ;)

Best thing about Poland (and Gar) is that he was so fucked up on drugs, that he got kicked out of Megadeth of all bands... Now that is tough.

Side note, check out the band OHM...
