I was done adding a few cheats to Pulstar and I was thinking about adding an option to remove the checkpoint system and just have the ship respawn right there. Not really a cheat rather than a change in the game design. It must piss alot of people off, so what does everyone else think of it? Do you think it's an integral part of the game or what?

I wouldn't mind seeing them go personally. Game is hard enough as it is. Just curious on what you think.

That would be great, the checkpoint issue is the soul reason i sold my Last Resort(twice)
Being respawn where you died is so much better.

I don't know I thought both games respawn points were fairly well placed with ample weapon powerups at each one. In Last Resort you only really need just 1 pickup to survive anyway.

Look into Pulstar code and check if 2 players can be enabled.

According to the Game Lord, it had 2 players in beta stage but it was removed due to slowdown issues.

Removal of the checkpoints would flaw the games, that is my opinion :-) They are survival games rather than scoring games, which makes the tough difficulty justified. They need to be tough.

Although I ain't to tell other people what to think :-) But I do not consider this an issue, your fixes to Samurai Spirits 3 for example felt like more of an upgrade to the game than this would.

EDIT. Aha, sorry. I think I missunderstood you. A cheat through the Unibios for example? My opinion still stands, I wouldn't use it :-) But then I have less of a problem with it.

It would be a 'cheat' for the CD version. I would not consider ever hacking up a Pulstar MVS for any reason, let alone something like this. SS3 was easy to justify since I got the gimped Korean version and it cost $15 or something. It's optional (ofcourse there are good reasons to disagree with this change) and only for the CD systems so most would never bother with it.

I'd disagree on the Respawn points in Pulstar. If you die mid stage (especially stage 2) they drop you right into "shitville" with no powerups...damn near impossible to get to the next checkpoint

I suppose so, it's been awhile since I've done the full game. Playing the game straight through is a bit longer then I'd like these days. I usually just start on Stage 4. Still though if you removed the checkpoints, then your still going to die over and over at the tricky parts anyways. The crazy waterfall maze (stage 6 I think) is doable from the checkpoint, but I can't imagine respawning in the middle of that...

The checkpoints are just like any 80s-90s hori shooter going back to Gradius/R-Type. They make sense within the overall game design and without them several games can become credit feeders. If you play Last Resort or Viewpoint 2-Player with the instant respawn there are several spots where you can't do much without the powerups you would have obtained at the checkpoint, particularly for Last Resort.

It's an OPTION guys. If you don't want it then leave it off, if you want to have the checkpoints disabled then turn it on.

His question is "Is the no checkpoints cheat wanted?".

I haven't played all the way through either game in years so I forgot most of the design in later parts. Still, if there's desire and it doesn't take much effort to put in the cheats will be there.

I think its a great idea. I honestly don't remember if the CD version of Viewpoint has the same problem, but the mvs does if 2 player isn't enabled.

Oh and to fix my PM: the sram I'm using is 8 not 4

You dont have checkpoints in viewpoint if you do 2 player on the MVS? sheesh i wish i had known that ! Thanks :)

EDIT: assuming thats what you're talking about? - I might check in the soft dip settings, cause i got last resort and pulstar (played blazing star yesterday and absolutely loved it but died so many times lol) as well as viewpoint which have the checkpoint based 1 hit deaths :p

Viewpoint MVS has a soft dip that allows normal 2-player alternating (has check-points) or 2-players at once (therefore no check-points)
