Finished this up recently. Overall thoughts , they definitely did a good job fleshing out the backstories of most characters but some of it was definitely not required. There was a complete imbalance in respect to abilities and power displayed by Trevor and Sypha - throughout the series they were having difficulty with some of the lowest tier trash mobs, only in the next to last episode to be completely overpowered and badass even against top tier enemies.
Alucard fan service of the wolf morph felt totally shoved in and pointless to the point of cringe.
The art style and the way some of the power moves were depicted was really cool, as was the death fight scene. Lastly I figured they would show Drac in some way at the end, but I'm happy with the way they did it ultimately.

Good, I like the new French Revolution time period. Does this mean we’re getting an adaptation of SoTN?

I don't like how they made the characters look soft. Kind of liked the look of the other castlevania series better.

Just finished season 1 and I thought it was just as badass as the first series. I really dig it.

I fucking hated just about all of Nocturne.

But I'm such a dumbass I'll probably keep watching and hoping for the best.

Can you guys get into what you mean?

I think I would have liked this cartoon in 5th grade, but I outgrew it by the time it came out. I only watched parts of season 1, season 2 I watched all of it (highlights being the Legion scene, and the fireside chat with Flyguy ). But never watched seasons 3 and 4.

Really good animation though. The show is not to my taste but definitely a really good way to adapt it. I'm glad it exists at least.

Warren Ellis was catastrophically unqualified to write G.I. Joe: Resolute in 2008, and he sure as *hell* didn't do the Castlevania IP any favors either before getting a cancel culture heave-ho from Netflix(due to decades-long sex pest escapades).

Imagine making a Castlevania story where the Belmonts aren't holy warriors devoted to God.

Oh wait. That's the Netflix show.

I still liked the Trevor stuff quite a bit. I've watched it several times and still find it engaging despite Ellis using the done to death trope of 'church as bad guy.'

Even Lords of Shadow had Gabriel as a soldier of God who fell from grace and became a vampire. And those are the least Castlevania games that have ever existed.

Nocturne was so weird with its French revolution subplot, Richter being a weakling and its out of nowhere black Annette from Jamaica talking about slave revolts or some shit.

Nocturne was such a weird hill for the production to die on. I was absolutely bewildered by a show with a limited span of episodes wasting this much time on storylines that absolutely didn't matter and weren't useful 'enhancements' to the story. I looked at the roomie while we were watching and said 'so I guess we're doing a tangent on Jamaica in our Castlevania show now...'

Oh, and the singing vampire. Can we please shed some sunlight on this dude? Same with gay vampire and his Catholic lover lol

I misspoke and meant to say, as mediocre as the show is, it's probably the best a western studio could have done adapting CV.

In my perfect dream world, a 1992 two-episode OVA Castlevania came out and nailed it. In real life, the first Vampire Hunter D is close enough to a Castlevania movie.

It's pretty obvious that Konami really doesn't give a damn anymore.
Give us money and we'll let you rape our IP with your modem audience message bullshit.
Fuck this.

Just finished up the second season of Castlevania: Nocturne.

An improvement over the first season in every way for sure.

It still isn't fantastic.

It just doesn't have the insufferable social justice messaging of the first season and is focused on vampire and monster killing.

There is still the irritating framework of the French Revolution that they use as a narrative device to set up the big army style battles, most of which aren't very impressive at all, but at least it assisted the more fun and interesting conflicts occurring.

Annette is actually pretty great in this second season.

Mizrak, the gay (not like 'Neo Geo.com' gay but an actual homosexual) Hospitalier or Templar (LOL), may be my favorite character in this entire series. Conflicted and yet still trying to act in accordance with his beliefs, the character has a depth that I did not expect. There's even this part where Olrox is talking about how his Aztec civilization laughed at the Spanish Christians that arrived on their shores, thinking their gods would protect them and then being left to fend for themselves. Mizrak says 'maybe it was your gods that was the problem.' Olrox doesn't respond, which is a nice way for the writers to not blame Christianity for every terrible thing that has ever happened. I am not relieved about this because I am a Christian. I am relieved about this because the cliche of 'evil Christian church' is tired as fuck and needs to die. It is the last refuge of creatively bankrupt people in this moment. It's okay to point out that other people havec done shitty things in the name of their faith, too.

Edouard still sings too much. Hate him.

Richter 'comes of age' in this second season but it doesn't feel earned. Very much a 'well, it's time for the climactic showdowns so Richter must get stronger' sort of thing, but that's because there are far too many plotlines happening all at once in this series. Richter is my favorite Belmont and the first season gave him too deep a hole to climb out of in terms of his evolution. There just wasn't enough focus on him in this season for me to buy into his upgrade. But his relationship with Annette is genuine and feels organic, so that's nice.

Alucard is Alucard. You like cool, mysterious and androgynous half-vampires with awesome powers and fighting skills, you won't be disappointed.

The whole Egyptian goddess in three spirits subplot is a bit much. Olrox should have been the villain. Sekhmet just complicates the story way too much.

I'd give this second season a 3.5 out of 5. There would be a lot to complain about if I were nitpicking but at least it isn't gay activism disguised as animation. It's a legitimate attempt to tell a supernatural action adventure. It leaves the social justice issues behind where they belong. Even the outcome of the French Revolution is treated, I think, as it should: a violent and bloody mess that spiraled out of control and led to a lot of shitty things happening.

Overall, Nocturne gets a 3 out of 5. The remarkable thing is that after the absolute turd of a first season, this follow up was infinitely more watchable. I'd welcome a third season on this trajectory.
